Queer is... odd... Well, both those options have the, um, benefit of usually being said with a certain amount of venom in the tone (much the same way "******" or "c***k" was used a century ago). xp

Because...f*****t is still pretty ******** derogatory? : o Imagine, people having a problem with that. Golly gee.
@Aretoo: I find queer to be much less offensive. I mean, any a*****e can use it as an insult and have it be hurtful, but there are entire university departments dedicated to Queer Studies. Then there's queercore music, genderqueer people, etc.
f*****t...not so much. Same with dyke. There aren't any courses in faggotry that one can sign up for. One hears of queer culture, not dyke/f** culture.

@Tae: On the other hand, there's a fantastic lesbian comic strip by Allison Bechdel named Dykes to Watch Out For, and I think "Lesbians On Bikes" doesn't have quite the same cachet about it. wink

aretoo @Tae: On the other hand, there's a fantastic lesbian comic strip by Allison Bechdel named Dykes to Watch Out For, and I think "Lesbians On Bikes" doesn't have quite the same cachet about it. wink
Both terms, f** (more than f*****t, usually) and dyke , can be used in certain contexts and not be derogatory. But there are a lot fewer situations in which one can use them in a non-derogatory way compared to other words.
