My biology life sciences teacher in Jr. High didn't believe in dissections, she felt they were cruel and unnecessary. Even the flowers that we examined in class was pushing it for her... stare

In the A.P. Bio class that I took in high school, on the other hand, we dissected frogs and squid, and there was talk of pigs, but we didn't have time for that. When the cephalopod unit was over we ate the left over squid. >_>

Your 'life sciences' teacher sounds kind of hippie-ish....

We dissected bullfrogs in my 8th grade science class (the whole lab/room smelled like chemicals for about a week...) and we dissected little run-of-the-mill frogs in high school bio. I'm pretty sure my bio teacher said she caught them herself >.> (that woman was always a little off...The year before, I had her for Earth Sciences and she said she dreamed about rocks....We were all pretty sure she was on something half the time...)

One of the adminstrators at my school commented that dissection was the point of Anatomy and I was like, "Well, then, why do the teachers offer alternatives?" I certainly don't want to be popping bones and break down crying (like I almost did with the frog).

I'm sorry, just watching the video we had to watch was almost too much. I'd rather do my research, holed up nice and comfortable in my room, taking notes.

Ah. Well, I know that not everyone can handle taking apart a small animal. I'm just disturbed enough to enjoy it (unless the damn pig is cute). Though I wouldn't go so far to say that dissection is the point behind Anatomy. Dissection certainly helps you learn anatomy, since you're actually seeing the parts for yourself, rather than just in diagrams on paper or on a model (we named ours Mr. Bojangles 3nodding )

@Invis — She seriously started crying when she was explaining why there were no dissections in her curriculum...

Ooh! Your Earth Sciences teacher sounds like my Earth Sciences teacher! *Tsuji's Earth Sciences teacher had, in the past, been arrested for trespassing in a quarry about thirty miles north of here. The rocks were talking to her.*

@Chexley — Well... You can't really know how something is put together without taking it apart... But, if you're squeamish, you're squeamish.

@Tsuji: Screw dat sheet, I prefer my diagrams. I'd rather play with a skeleton than a cat.

The long-term sub for our class tried telling me that I would drop out of the Air Force and become a doctor. HA. A teacher, maybe, but no way in hell am I being on call for several years without pay (internship sucks).
