Tianara waited for a moment or two, then smiled abashedly and turned back to the group. "Sorry," she murmured. "It seems that now that this has happened, I'm rather..."
A young orderly entered the room and scanned it. Spotting their group, he came over to them and spoke softly to Tianara for some moments, during which she went pale and very quiet. "Yes? Oh. All right. Of course. Yes, certainly," she murmured at various intervals as he spoke.
She turned to Joshua and the others and said quietly, "He's awake. He's woken up already. He wants to see me - and probably the rest of us, too. This man," she nodded at the orderly, who blushed a little, "was sent to get us. We can see him - he's getting very agitated about seeing us, apparently. But we have to be very calm. Okay?"

Another thought crossed his mind - How had the man known to ask for Tianara and the others? He'd been unconscious the whole time. Shaking his head, he decided to ignore it. He'd seen some weird things since he first met Katalina. "I guess we'd better go see him then. See what's got him so agitated." Joshua nodded as he spoke.
Aria sat listening to the others speak. When Tianara finished, she rose to stand beside them. Her grandfather too, came over. "Shall we go?" She asked in her soft voice. She found it rather odd that the man was already awake. It had looked like he'd be out for awhile. Still, some people healed better than others she guessed. Aria and Allen nodded at Tianara's instructions. Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara was frowning when they came to join her. "He knew to ask for me," she murmured. "He must have felt me reaching, and responded. But how can he be awake already? He was hurt. It was bad." She looked at Joshua. "It was bad, wasn't it?" Ocean children did have a tendency to heal faster than most humans, but not so much faster that he'd already been awakened from a concussion. Perhaps in her fear for her brother, she'd felt old wounds as well as current ones. She didn't think so, but anything was possible.
The orderly led them silently through the halls, not seeming to hear anything they were saying. Turning into one of the rooms, he nodded them through. Tianara went in with no hesitation whatsoever - she was confused and worried, and wanted to see him.
She stopped and frowned. The man was there, all right, but he was still out. It certainly didn't look like he was agitated - indeed, it didn't look as though he had awoken at all.

Mac followed the others calmly, and he didn't speak. Gale kept herself perched as he walked. Watching the man in bed didn't seem to phase him much, and he stood close by the others.

It had been pretty bad." He shook his head slightly. Sighing, he followed Tianara into the room and was surprised to see the man looking like he was still out. Now he was more confused than ever and by the looks on Aria and Allen's faces, he wasn't the only one. The man didn't look agitated in the least. What was going on? The instant the door closed behind the orderly, however, the man's eyes opened. "Is..." he rasped, then shook his head slightly as though to clear it. After a dry, ragged cough, he continued, his voice sounding stronger. "Is he gone?" The deep green eyes locked on Tianara - he didn't seem to realize that the others were there.
Tianara was by his bedside without any hesitation, speaking quickly in the bubbly language of the merfolk. He responded in kind. After a moment, she glanced back at the others. "He says he made it feel worse than it was," she said quietly. "To us and to the doctors. He felt me searching for others, and was calling us." Returning her attention to the man, she continued speaking to him in their language, hands clasped and eyes wide and solemn. "There was something in the woods, he says - he wanted to get us out."
She smiled a bit as the man murmured something. "He really was hurt in the alley, though. A lot of the wounds were real - he didn't fake it entirely." Gently, she rested a hand over the stranger's in an expression of solidarity.
The man's gaze - coolly inquiring, but not quite hiding the fact that the pain was still dulling his senses - passed over them. "Kiro," he murmured. A faint smile touched his lips. "I'm Kiro. I apologize for the deception - but had you been much longer in the woods, I don't know what might have happened to you. And you had my sister with you." Tianara's little smile warmed. Apparently they understood one another.

Shadow Hunter, Silent Hunter The forest is yours alone Night Hunter, Quiet Hunter None disturb your hunt Joshua sighed, listening to the bubbly language of the merfolk. True he was learning, but he barely had the basics down. Whatever they were saying was well beyond him. Joshua ran one hand through his hair, listening to the explanation. "What was in the woods?" He murmured, more to himself than anything. "I'm Joshua." He responded to Kiro's introduction. He did have one point that he wanted to clarify before anything else. "So are you two seriously blood siblings?" He asked, pointing from one to the other. He knew the ocean children had a kinship bond, but Tianara hadn't called the woman 'sister'. If the two were seriously related, how could they tell? Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara blinked, but Kiro merely laughed. His laughter was soft, but managed to be somehow rich at the same time - perhaps a side product of that accent. "Hello, Joshua. We are not blood siblings as normal humans would consider it," he replied, still smiling. "But we come from the same clan. We have the same mother, and share the same kin. It is close enough."
He glanced at Tianara, who smiled at the others and shrugged apologetically. "I knew my mother had taken in others before," she explained, "but I didn't know who they were or where they had gone from here. I only realized Kiro was my brother when we found him." The amusement in her gaze was enough to suggest she found a great deal to laugh about in all this, now that she knew her brother was all right. "I doubt any parent would be careless enough to lose two children overboard," she said lightly. There was an undertone of bitterness in the words, barely audible to anyone who didn't know her.

They were adopted siblings, same as some on the surface. He shrugged in response to Tianara's words. "Hey, if one person can get hit by lightening multiple times, then one person can lose two kids. Shipwreck maybe. Who knows?" In this world, anything seemed possible. Still, Joshua found it rather neat that one of the only ocean children Tianara could locate was her own brother. Mac walked up to Kiro slowly, and Gale fluttered about near Mac's head. "My name is Mac" he said first, "Did something happen in the woods?" he asked quietly and yet confidently.

Kiro smiled a little, his hand shifting under Tianara's until she removed it gently. He lifted a brow at her with a grin, and with a smile of her own she picked up the waterglass on the side table. While she slipped into the bathroom to fill it, Kiro said quietly in response to Joshua's words, "Let's not talk about that, all right?" With the best shrug he could manage, he explained, "Tia thinks that her parents might have dumped her overboard. She certainly wasn't in a shipwreck. So we don't bring it up a lot - it's a sore spot."
Tianara re-entered the room in time to catch Mac's question. She shook her head at him. "Don't," she said. "He's sick."
Kiro's amused glance her way told anyone looking that he knew exactly what she was doing. "Don't protect me, Tia," he said gently. "The boy has the right idea." Turning his gaze frankly to Mac, he replied, "Nothing happened, as is proven by the fact that you are all here and whole. But I felt something...ugly...in the woods, at the same time as I felt my sister there. So I sent her a bit of a blast so that she would lead you all out of there before whatever it was caught up with you. If she hadn't been with you, or I hadn't felt her...?" He shrugged. "I don't know what would have happened."

Mac looked down, "Hmmm, a negative being..." he pondered. He knew things were going to get serious soon. "These things aren't normal creatures...they attack with no reason. We should be more wary..." he said mysteriously.

'What kind of person would do that?' He shook his head just as Tianara re-entered the room. He frowned at Kiro's explanation, wondering just what was in the woods. Would it be safe to use that path again? To head back to the cove? If they couldn't, they would have to find some other way to contact Katalina and the others. Tianara, guessing at Joshua's thoughts, turned to her brother. "Does it live there?" she asked quietly. "Is it still there, or is it just passing through?"
Kiro smiled wearily, patting her hand. "It doesn't live there," he said softly. "I'd have felt it before, and I didn't. You'd have felt it, and you didn't. I don't know if it's still there - I don't feel it anymore, but that doesn't mean anything, necessarily. I can't reach as far."
"And you shouldn't try," replied Tianara soothingly, understanding. She turned her gaze to the others, not quite forbidding them to ask him anything further but something close to that. For someone who had seen him for the first time when she'd found him bleeding in an alleyway, she was surprisingly protective of Kiro.

It meant the cove was still accessible. He raised an eyebrow at the protective gaze Tianara turned on them. "Apparently this conversation is now closed." He said with a wry grin and a laugh.
