I think its simply because he plays Edward and girls got all crazy and fangirly over HIM before it made it to the movies... that's the ONLY answer I've got, otherwise I'm lost... teenage girls stopped making sense to me sometime around the time I WAS a teenage girl

Well there's got to be something about him (not the character) that's attractive because, when you think about it, he was cast as Cedric Diggory as well, and in the books Cedric was always described as incredibly attractive (as evidenced by like every other girl at Hogwarts fawning over him). =/
