When I initially tried to read the books (book 3 or 4 was out at the time), I did not see what all the fuss was about. I still don't really think book 1 or 2 is all that great. However, starting with book 3, they get good, and end up getting progressively better. (Although the last one dragged a bit, but it was worth it by the end.)
I still haven't seen the newest movie, and I've been dying to.

I quite like the books, but you're right that it gets better from the third book on. I definitely think there were some plot holes, but nothing too serious. razz
The movie is awesome. You must see it. They did such a good job at keeping to the book.

Silly is you in a natural state, and serious is something you have to do until you can get silly again
Plotholes were part of the charm~

It's still lingering in theatres I think, so unless I get there really soon, I'll have to wait a few months to see it on DVD.
DO WANT.
There's another one coming out/already out called It's Kind of a Funny Story...(I think). It looks really good.

It's set in the psych ward of a hospital. Since I spent most of my time there this summer, I'm curious to see the movie.

Will likely be horribly inaccurate, but it looks cute nonethless. xD
Another one I saw recently, Manic, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was excellent. Much more accurate, but also not exactly a cheerful movie. The end was good, though. I hate sad endings.
