It all depends on what you would consider metal, and what sort of metal, like black metal or death metal.
Classic Metallica could be considered metal, as well as Iron Maiden. Mayhem was a pioneer band in the rise of black metal. Behemoth is a good contemporary death metal band.
I could go through an extensive list.
