"You think they would bother to keep a more elaborate record on this matter..." Twilight muttered crossly to herself as she read through the few pages of notes that the villagers of the latest town she'd stumbled across handed to her. They needed help tracking whatever was killing the villagers at night, but the descriptions of the bodies and where they were located were vague. She handed the scroll of paper to Rona to hold. The college had sent another master and their apprentice to help her and Rona, so they would need to wait for them to arrive so she could pass along the information.
Groaning, Twilight ran a hand through her raven black hair. "This is going to take time and many nights. If only they hadn't buried the latest victim already." She sighed as she got up and grabbed her staff that she had leaned against the table. Going back out to the village leader, she explained that the lack of information would delay her investigation some. She couldn't waste energy looking for something when she had no clue what it was or where it was last seen. They would stay in the village and wait for the others to arrive before they could continue the investigation any further.

Gale had walked more than his share of paths in his lifetime, toward any village that needed his help, so it lead to no surprise when he told people he was bored of taking normal routes. He had no idea how Amaya must feel about such things, taking the roads less traveled when there was time to spare, but it kept him on his feet. With the girl a few steps behind him he focused on the rocky path they'd chosen earlier that morning, one which he'd periodically been using to test her wits. She'd shown promise when he'd asked her to try and whittle out an idea on how to pass over a rocky river earlier, moving rocks with magic to turn into stepping stones, and now it looked like as they neared the last obstacle he'd test her again.
The Sorcerer turned toward his Apprentice with a smile, standing beneath a ledge with no visible way up which was far too high to climb themselves. "Now Amaya, the village should be just past this ledge. I'm sure a rest would be nice right about now, but I can't fathom stopping for long. How would you suggest battling this?" He gestured toward the rocky outcrop, smiling brightly as he thought of a few ways to get past it on his own.

"Perhaps the culprit used magic to keep their actions discrete?" Rona suggested as she followed Twilight obediently, holding the scroll close to her with both hands as if she'd guard it with her life. "The villagers can't be blamed if they don't have the resources to conduct a proper investigation. As for the body, I suppose it isn't too surprising that they'd want to perform the proper rituals and treat the victims with respect."

Though her master seemed to always take the more difficult roads, Amaya never complained. In truth, she enjoyed the constant challenges Gale gave her, even if she was bone tired.
They were near the village now, and she knew her master would test her soon. A small smile came to her lips as he stopped and asked how they would get over the ledge. Contemplating the options for a few moments, the young apprentice looked up at the ledge and cocked her head.
"We could break off a large section of earth and levitate it up the ledge...or we could use a spell to carve a set of stairs along and up the wall..." She suggested, hoping at least one of her answers was what Gale was expecting.

"But if that were the case, there would be a faint sense of magic still in the air." Twilight sighed. Looking back at Rona now, she shook her head. "Even if the villagers don't have the resources they need, they could have been more specific on details of how the body was found, and where it was found. The most description I could find in any location was on the east side of the village. Not any certain house, and the fact that several of the dead villagers' names were not reported concerns me as well..." She sighed.

Gale listened, still smiling, and nodded his head as Amaya finished. "The stairs are a good idea. Wonderful job." It was times like these, when Amaya chose to think things through rather than blindly do as some Apprentices chose to, that Gale was glad he'd seen her wandering the streets as a child. The girl who stood before him now was nothing like the one who had seemed so lost on that day. True, it had also been about fourteen years worth of magical learning which had brought her to this point, but he could always ignore such small details.
He told Amaya where to stand and the two faced off at the ledge, arms out. It wasn't long before they'd used a bit of earth-shattering to their advantage and carved out a rough set of stairs that would be useful to them and the rest of the village. That, of course, had been what made it the best choice. As they trapezed up these steps, having stacked the removed stones near the bottom edge of the stairs, Gale balanced his mace on his shoulder and took a look around. The village lay just ahead of them, as he'd assumed, with the path that most people would have taken coming in from the northeastern edge. They came from the direct east, meaning it wasn't the face of the village they saw first, just some regular houses.
"I always liked seeing things from a different angle... Now, let's find dear Twilight..." She was the reason he was here, after all. He and Amaya had been called in to aid them in an investigation of the killings in the village.

"Then it may not be entirely implausible that they know something more. Either they have their suspicions and they're protecting someone, or they're being threatened to cover up evidence." Rona said easily as she tucked the scroll into a messenger bag that hung at her side. "We'll just have to see if we can't search the eastern houses."

"Yes, my young apprentice. But we shall wait until we have met up with the other master and their apprentice, let them look over the evidence, and discuss a course of action. They should be arriving soon, but until they do, let us go to the tavern." Twilight told Rona as she headed for the tavern that was only a few hundred feet away.
When they walked in, Twilight found a table and took a seat, the gem in her staff flashing lightly. "Yes, I know they'll be here soon. Just be patient." She muttered, keeping an eye on the door as she ignored the stares from all the people in the tavern.
