Shahera wasn’t entirely sure how she had ended up on the back of the dragon, or why even. Something about a beach and firelizards. Mostly it had been the cute brown rider asking if she wanted to go flying that made her say yes. Not that that same brown rider was forgotten about the minute she realized there were babies on that beach. Baby firelizards had to be the most adorable creatures, if noisy and messy and rude and…well, they were babies.

She hopped down without so much as a bye to the rider, who was laughing at her bouncing eagerness, and ran off to the clutch, only to run back and demand food which was offered with the same laughter. She quickly joined the growing throng on people trying to entice a flit to them. “Here little flitty flit flit…I got a nice piece of…” Shahera looked at what was in her hand really for the first time, “…wherry for you…” She was delighting in the antics of the little ones, and simply being in awe of being able to watch the hatchings and would be thankful for the chance to see it even if she didn’t get to entice one to impress on her.

They were busy trying to decide what to do with their fortuitous day off when Kith had received a message that there were firelizards hatching on Ista. It had taken Camriel all of thirty seconds to hop onto her dragon and A'rell, a little surprised and caught entirely off guard, and stumbled over to a passively unhelpful Azoth and followed Kith's boundlessly enthusiastic lead.

Someone had mentioned at some point that their rudimentary-at-best, out-of-weyr education meant that they really shouldn't go Between until someone had brushed up on their technique. But as Camriel liked to say, they'd gone this long without killing themselves to it had to mean that whatever they were doing wrong couldn't be that wrong.

They landed in Ista and followed the crowd to the beach as Camriel pulled some homemade hare jerky out of her pocket.

"What did you bring?" she demanded, elbowing A'rell in the ribs. Her twin patted his pockets.

"Uhm. Day-old Benden Baklava?" he answered, unwrapping a small piece.

You really aren't putting much effort into this, are you, Azoth stated, regarding the baklava with no small amount of disdain.

"Excuse me if I don't really want a nosy flit running around the place," A'rell grumbled. "Messy little things. Anyway, what would you suggest?" He jabbed the baklava in the brown dragon's direction.

Removing the stick from your behind, Azoth replied promptly, impassively. Maybe you'll tempt one with a game of fetch.

A'rell relayed the message to Camriel, who burst out laughing and clutched her side. "You can't say he's wrong," she said pointedly. Then her small hand closed around Ar'ells wrist and she dragged him toward the sands, weaving their way through the crowd. She'd just reached out to wave some hare jerky at the hatching flits when someone all but shoved her arm out of the way. She rounded on the offender, even as A'rell tried in vain to redirect her attention back to the flits.

"Were you born with your eyes on your a** instead of your face?" she snapped at lanky teen beside her. "There's room for everyone. Watch what you're shoving."

Kieza hadn't been paying attention, her gaze looking at the waters as they rolled their way up onto the beaches. It was only when she heard shifting sands and then felt the pinching bites of the small firelizard that she cut her gaze and looked down. Her eyes widened in shock and her face scrunched momentarily at the biting.

The girl reached down, trailing her fingers near the green beast's head. The firelizard let out an unhappy hiss, and it's head shot out after the fingers trying to bite them hungrily. Kiza took that moment to wrap her hand around the small creature's body and pull it from her foot. Small punctures stood out against her skin, and the patient girl rolled her eyes. She had never had the opportunity to handle firelizards before, but she knew that they were like most beasts in the fact they were near always hungry. The green's tail slapped against her arm and it wriggled in her grasp, and Kieza had to set it down in fear of accidentally dropping the small thing. When she released it, the green spun around, hissed and launched it's little body at her, tiny wings outspread in it's attempt to fly at her. It didn't quite work and only made it as far as her tunic, but it did make her fall over into the sands behind her. Kieza reached into her bag, fingers wrapping around a sliver of jerky. It was amusing that as soon as she had pulled it from her bag that the writhing ball of angry stilled and a pair of small eyes stared at her hand, particularly at the bit of dried meat the clutched.

Like a homing missile, the creature moved up her body and then made a laughable attempt to walk along her extended arm before launching itself at her fingers. It latched on and hungrily devoured the morsel before it went still and looked back at Kieza, tilting her head to the side. Kieza felt a sense of incredible hunger waft over her and... a minute apology? A tiny tongue flicked out and licked her fingers.

"So that's all this is? You're hungry. You little Buggy." A smile pulled at her lips. She reached into her bag once more, pulled out a larger piece and handed it gently into the waiting jaws of the firelizard. It hissed momentarily and launched itself at her again, this time with a little less hostility, and the green's lanky body laid along her forearm, tail wrapped around her arm tightly as it began to work at the meat hungrily.

Kieza felt her heart could burst in happiness. It wasn't a dragon partner, but it would due until she was chosen. But even then... this little firelizard was hers.

Caderyn still sat on his haunches, the pies and rolls held in his hands, waiting. There was nothing he could do beside wait and that kind of annoyed him. He shook his head and tried to clear his thoughts of that, letting any negativity into this, well he just didn't want to deal with that. He felt a bit of pressure at the moment because his father was here and watching him. He wanted to be able to impress one of these firelizards to show his dad that he could impress one, it was different then impressing a dragon.

His eyes had begun to scan the beach, seeing that more and more people had arrived. He sighed softly, he hadn't made many friends in his own Weyr, not with how his personality was, so he didn't really know anyone, and it didn't help that he found more people here just troublesome.

Feeling that his legs were starting to go to sleep, Caderyn moved and switched his position so that he was sitting on the ground now. He crossed his legs and placed the food in front of him.

Ah, yes, just excellent. Of course the person he'd nearly shoved was a rider, and one he thought was...at least vaguely familiar. He might have only been at Western Weyr a little over three months, but he had made it a personal point to at least start learning the names of as many riders as he could. That he didn't know this one on sight? She couldn't be anyone terribly important, or he'd know who she was, obviously. Still, she technically outranked him, and so the lanky candidate ducked his head in apparent sheepishness, a self-deprecating smile of...debatable genuineness lancing across his face before he turned to continue regarding the firelizards.

"My most sincere apologies, rider," They really probably weren't. "I'm certain that you can remember how it was to be so young and excited." His eyes were fixed on one of the little roving lizards, tracking its progress across the sand. "And, no, as I'm sure you can tell, my eyes are in the normal location. I promise the searchrider who procured me made certain that they were properly placed before having me along—I'd say you'd agree that a weyr during threadfall is no place for such...asininity." His tone was light, conversational in the face of her snappish inflection, and it sounded like he was making a sort of light joke of the situation. It also sounded the tiniest bit like he was implying she was being childish by being so angry over something effectively harmless.

Another glance, just long enough to determine that he did know the male who seemed to be trying to get her attention. A brownrider, and thus vaguely of interest. A-something. A'ron? A'tell? No, he knew this...A'rell, yes, that was it. They'd never met, of course. He bore enough resemblance to the first rider that they simply must be siblings. Perhaps twins, he decided, before pulling his face into a sympathetic expression for a flicker of a moment. Then all his focus was back on the hatchlings.

Jynnat glanced at the others out of the corner of her eyes. So much competition. She felt there should be someone to hold order, but it was clearly a free for all. Undoubtedly, whoever tried to instill order would favor the dragonriders or older people. Candidates would be left with the short stick, so to speak. She shook her head, these are no thoughts to be having at a hatching! Jynnat told herself firmly. Focus on the firelizards.

She shifted slightly closer to the action and held out a small piece of dried fish. Hopefully it would be appealing enough to a small firelizard. She tried to keep pleasant thoughts in her head and directed them at any firelizard that came close to her. As she crouched there, she began to realize just how hot the sands were. Almost like a hatching cavern, which is why the nest was here, she thought ruefully. She held the piece of dried fish close to the sand, in reach of any interested firelizard.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rinis sat breathlessly with wide eyes. It wasn't a dragon hatching, but firelizards were adorable. Belatedly she tucked the piece of wherry meat inside her tunic to keep it slightly warm and so she wouldn't loose it on the trip between. This was a much wilder ride than their trip to go get berries! Certainly not planned for one.
Z'yden had been with the Candidates, showing the few that were interested a few massage techniques that might aid their growing dragonets should they Impress, when Sameth's rumble sounded in his head.
It seems there is a firelizard clutch hatching at a beach near Ista, my own. Shall we attend? Perhaps bring the eager Candidate with the magic hands, the large Blue practically purred in his bonded's mind. Z'yden chuckled softly to himself and nodded. "Let's go, then." He tapped the young Candidate, he believed her name was Asheryn, on the shoulder and sent her off at a run to the kitchens for meatrolls.
When she came back with a small basket full of food, Z'yden had gotten Sameth hooked up and helped Asheryn on before mounting himself and taking them between to the beach.
Asheryn was practically vibrating with excitement. She couldn't believe she had been so lucky as to be right next to a dragon rider when news came in of a hatching firelizard clutch, let alone that he had chosen her to ride with him! She clutched the basket of meatrolls and tried not to squeal in shock when the big Blue beneath her launched himself into the sky. Her heart was racing and she couldn't wait until she Impressed one of her very own. She could only hope to be so lucky.
When they landed, Z'yden helped her down and Sameth gave her an affectionate nudge with his giant head. Z'yden laughed and relayed the Blue's message. "He says you can come visit him any time you feel like practicing massage."
Asheryn giggled and hugged Sameth's head, stroking his eye ridges. "I might just take you up on that!" she said before splitting the contents of the basket with Z'yden and heading for the clutch. There was already so many people, but she hoped to Impress a little darling anyway. She knelt on the sands and cooed, holding out a meatroll. "Here cutie," she murmured softly.
Z'yden watched the crowd around the hatchlings before finding himself a place to try and entice a firelizard with a meatroll. They smelled good to him, even after the quick freeze of between, so hopefully the firelizards would, too.
The blue took off and they all went between with great interest in the events on the beach. Blinking out of between Solouth landed quite gracefully with so many people to notice and critique his grace and skill. This made his rider chuckle a little.
L'saen gave Rinis a hand at getting off, then scrambled down himself to join the watchers. This was so exciting! He pulled some roasted meat out of his sandwhich it was fragrant and well spiced..he wanted to eat it, Solouth wanted to eat it, he hoped it would be just as enticing for a little firelizard.
He looked over the eggs, they were so sweet and so cute, he wiped a bit of a watery eye as he remembered when Solouth had hatched. Ah hatchings were a great day!
Solouth found a nice sandy corner to chill in while his peoples were off lizard egg hunting, they were cute, with their excitement.
Sure enough, a little fire-lizard half-hopped, half-shrieked at her offer. Red eyes whirled quickly with excitement and the little creature gave another petulant plea. The blue firelizard flapped his wings, and tried desperately to fly. Unfortunately, he had only just hatched, and his minute-old wings were still a bit damp. His flying was more akin to leaping, and he collapsed in a pathetic heap at her feet.
He wanted the food Roslyn offered. Why wasn't she giving it to him?
Roslyn dropped to her knees in front of him, cooing softly as she put the pieces of meat right in front of his mouth. He shrieked and gobbled it all in a few bites, then stared up at her waiting for more while his eyes swirled brightly. She felt a sense of great hunger and grinned at him happily, pulling out and offering him more chunks of wherry meat. "Aren't you just so precocious?" He chomped it down then burped at her, small stomach beginning to bulge as he waited for more.
Ros had grabbed way too much meat and she shoved her bag over onto the sand to make room for her to pull him onto her lap. She grabbed a piece for him out of the bag and tried to slowly feed it to him. He shrieked again, wanting the meat right now, not slowly. Ros opened her hand fully and he hissed then grabbed it, a sense of immediacy filling her. "You're going to overstuff yourself, you silly thing." Ros told him as he ate it.
His stomach was round as could be, taunt over his meal as he started get drowsy. Ros smiled again, a sense of love falling over her as she watched his head start to droop. She looked around at the others still trying to entice firelizards to themselves, the beach was so packed all she could see from this vantage was a sea of legs with some minute patches of sand and water showing through.
It was terribly hard to wait patently. Jynnat tried not to fidget, but had to still herself a couple of times. These weren't like dragons, she had to remind herself. Dragons sought their rider out. These things just wanted to be fed and didn't care who or what did it. Was there really any hope for her? The candidate made kissy noises in hopes of attracting a firelizard to her. Was it the food she'd brought? Who wanted dried fish anyway?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rinis took dutiful note of the blue's graceful landing and patted his shoulder before her attention was drawn to the important beach. She could see all the people gathered around. With her eyes fixed on the gathering it was surprising she made it down the dragon's side without falling on her face. That would be L'saen watching out of her.

The young woman moved a bit closer to the excitement, but was still standing behind everyone. She had taken the meat she'd brought and was clutching it tightly to her chest. She'd love a little one to call her own. There was already so many crowding around that she was afraid she'd step on someone or a firelizard in the confusion.

I don't think the word sincere means what he think it means. Azoth glanced sidelong at the Candidate and Kith, who had been privy to this information, promptly relayed it to Camriel.

She'd been ready to leave it at that, after a quick scolding, but Dolmar's next words had her bristling like an angry doh. She would have launched herself, hare jerky and all, at the tall young man if her twin hadn't quickly reached out and arm and caught her around the ribcage.

"Asinine- I'll show you how asinine you can be with my foot up your a**," she barked. "Quite literally. It's small enough to fit."

"Camriel, enough, your hatchlings are going away," A'rell put in, quite bodily turning his twin away from the Candidate and back toward the flits. "Nobody's putting anything up anyone else's orifices today."

Just because you're not planning on getting lucky today doesn't mean nobody else is... came the familiar deadpanning.

Thank you Azoth, for your priceless contributions.
