Finbar lifted his shoulders at the same time as he nodded, in response to the man's question. He'd been meaning to throw the fish back, but he wasn't overly attached to the idea. He just didn't happen to have any use for it now. He didn't have any way to store it, for one, and the trip back to their island was long enough that he wouldn't want to leave it baking on the deck of his ship for that long in the sun. But if it was inconvenient, or if L'an had a use for it, then it wasn't necessary. He certainly wasn't sentimental about such things. If the fish lived or died, it was all the same to him. Only, he didn't like to kill something only to let it go to waste. If they didn't need it, he'd rather send it back. "Unless you want it," he offered. "Or Alcherath does."

Either way, though, they still needed to do something about the line. He put his hands out when L'an told him to, holding the fish still for him to work with and watching him closely. This, too, was interesting, since he'd never done it before. He wondered if this is what it was like being an apprentice- just kind of watching and learning. It must be easier than the way he learned most things (besides those Neri and Cal taught him) which was to fail over and over again until you eventually figured something out. Even then, he couldn't say anything he did was the 'best' way, only that it happened to work for him.

He nodded L'an's reassurance, more curious than anything now, watching him dig inside the fish's mouth for the line.

It took some doing, but in a moment L'an had snipped the line clean at the base of the hook, leaving the twist of metal still lodged in the side of the fish's insides. As soon as the line snapped the pole twanged free, tension released at last. "There y'go, free to toss now." He absently wiped the clinging bit of fish slime off his blade on the leg of his trousers, slid it back into the sheathe, and then did the same with his hands. "Rather not feed it to Alcherath with a hook in. Could cut that bit out, but more work'n needed for her to have a crumb-sized snack. Kitchens might like it, but...unless I flew it back...eh. Better to toss it back I s'pose."

He kicked back in his seat, task accomplished, to watch whatever choice Finbar'd make with the same half-awake bleary stare. "I can rehook the line if y'want to try again. I'd say no more gut-hooks, if you'd not mind but...that's on the fish, not you." He tapped the small box of fishing accoutrements with a toe, his head dropping idly to rest almost on one shoulder.

From down below, Alcherath came sliding up from the water, long neck dripping water to make a faint arc of rainbowed light off the side of the ships. He lanced a mental note her way, to be sure she'd not eat the fish if the boy tossed it back in. He was sure she'd digest it fine but...better safe than sorry, when it came to the ones he bothered to care about, right? The green warbled in reply, sending impressions of a number of other fish she'd already enjoyed, eaten whole, beneath the waves. Surely he didn't think her such a glutton, did he?

Finbar held the fish tightly as L'an reached in to cut the line, keeping it from flapping around while he worked. He nodded and took a step back as the line was cut loose, causing the rod to spring backwards, moving back over to the edge of the ship. He waited until L'an had finished speaking, but as it seemed like he didn't want it after all (and of course, he hadn't even thought that the hook might be dangerous), he went ahead and tossed it back. He loosened his grip just above the water and the fish wriggled out of his grasp, diving back beneath the waves with a splash.

He considered the man's offer, but eventually shook his head. He should probably be getting back. For one thing, he had just realized that he was out here, completely alone, on a stranger's ship. Which was just the kind of thing Cal always told him not to do. You never knew who was a pirate these days, and if they found out where he was from or what they did, they might want to take revenge. At least, that's what Cal said.

"I better get back.." he said, a little regretfully, stepping back over to his own boat. He smiled as the green head of the dragon burst out of the water again. "It was nice to meet you, Alcherath." he said cheerfully towards the dragon, before turning to L'an with a nod. "Thanks for letting me borrow your thing." he said, meaning the fishing rod, whose name he still didn't know.

With an outreached hand a plop, the fish was gone, back off into the waves where it was no doubt much happier to be, if slightly heavier for its trouble. Alcherath's whirling eyes tracked it for a moment before it dove, swimming down and out of sight between long twisting vines of seaweed. A beat later the other young man was leaping back across to his own boat, calling off and bidding him thanks for the company. It seemed somewhat abrupt, but then...

L'an had never been one for prolonged company anyway. "It's called a fishing pole." He waved the slender rod slightly. "Terribly original, hmm? I didn't name it...oh, right. Save sailing back to...wherever." Maybe he'd done or said something to startle the fellow off. Maybe he'd had something else to do. Maybe L'an stank, and didn't know it. In the end it didn't really matter. He settled back on his haunches, already working to attach a new hook to the line as his green gave a trilling farewell to their brief companion.
