I think people need to start small to begin with. The world needs to fully participate with things like recycling and proper insulation in homes so that raw energy supplies aren't used up so quickly.
recycling actually doesn't help. The process used to melt materials into raw materials then change it into something else releases huge amounts of Co2, CO and other deadly gases. This is dangerous for the workers and the planet.

It depends on the type of recycling, and how it's going about, but you're right, recycling doesn't do as much as people think it does.

What people need to do is to REDUCE the amount of products and energy they consume and use every day. The average American citizen uses more than TWICE the amount of energy and resources than the average citizen in other industrialized countries such as France and Britain, and more than TEN TIMES the amount of energy and resources that a person uses in countries like India, South Africa, or other third-world nations.

What recycling does help with is reduce the amount of waste that's produced by the average citizen, and reduces the amount of resource extraction that must be done. The more things that are made out of recycled paper there are, the less trees need to be cut down. The more recycled metals are used, the less we have to mine for them.

The only process which releases "deadly gases" and other greenhouse gases is the one used to recycle plastics, which is a petroleum-based substance (the same as burning oil). While it does produce gases, it's in a much smaller amount that the process which is used to extract, purify, and ship the raw oil that it is made from.
