My original roleplay character had katanas. He rarely if ever used them and they weren't plain old katanas either. He usually used a handgun anyway.
In the case of a Godly character, a friend of mine can do it well. However it's difficult to avoid Godmodding, and as a remedy to that he almost never actually fights.
I guess the thing is people pick common cliches because they think they're great. After that they abandon any weaknesses that the species may have too.
Ok, my mindless rambling aside the thing about commonly cliched RPs is this. Kids want to be what is POPULAR. Popular as in:
Inuyasha Dragonball Z (Not so much anymore) Vampires Demons High Schoolers Nekos Mech Pilots (sometimes) Wizards
So naturally they want: Katanas Buster Swords A pair of Pistols A pair of Daggers A long Stick Any kind of magic weapon Scythe (Sometimes)
As much as people want to be individual, they never make an effort to break the norm. This is how you can tell the more serious RPers from the passing RPers.

Well i can tell you that 've noticed it to. I don't think I ever played a game in Barton Town where there wasn't some form of "demon" or "vampire." Things like Inuyasha, and Ann Rice ruined these things for me...
the vampire is supposed to freaking die! He's the villian! He's not supposed to be going around a dank city looking for female vampires to get raunchy with. And what's the deal with these "types" of vampires? And these kids who say they've studied them? As if the're really was lore about "psy-vampires" anywhere besides those dime a dozen novels...
I like to play a demon on occasion too, but when I do it, it's a proper biblical demon, not one of these japanese animal demons that I see litterally everywhere... in fact i was just in Sanzo's demon roleplay a while ago, and I played a biblical demon in a land where these more new-age sorts are running rampant. The contrast between my properly-bread-stright-from-hell attitude and the supa'-awesome-anti-hero that just about everyone else seemed to cling to made that game pretty fun.
I want to address something else that annoys me about roleplays, especially on Gaia.
This whole "If you wanna get raunchy, TAKE IT TO THE PMs!" rule, that everyone seems to think needs to be stated before an RP can officially begin...
I'm not trying to contest it, but you would think that people get it by now... it's only been reprinted UGABAZILLION times, as well as saying it in the ToS. I say leave the rule out, if someone stupidly starts a cyber session in the middle of the game, that's just tough luck for them, they can enjoy their wonderful vacasion off of the internetz.
It's almost like by putting that rule in your saying "This roleplay was orrigionally supposed to have alot of cybering in it, but since the ToS says you can't do that, we want you to secretly do it behind the safty of the PM screen." or even more blatent: "I started this RP because I'm a horny teenager, and I want to get e-laid."
GAH! it makes me angry...

Yeah, and WTF is so fun about cybering anyway?! Do people really sit there and masturbate to what somebody else typed and posted on their PC?

Saverio C. PahnGreen (and b*****d swords are cooler.) N00b everyone knows a short sword is where it is at talk2hand Actually I have to agree, the ambiguity of the b*****d sword is pretty cool. Short swords on;t do it for me if I'm a spell caster. I myself am more of a long/broad sword kind of guy. and I recently discovered the practicality of a good and sturdy scythe.

The best for me is a good old long bow, alonge with my bluff attacks. nothing is more fun than makeing a move sound deadly and it do nothing. Aside from create a big a** distraction

Well, off of the discussion of pointy weapons of yore, My favorite would probably be the sap (or blackjack). It's just hard not to have fun with a leather sack full of lead. *grins shiftily*

To be honest, the only cliché weapon I've ever roleplayed with would have to be the Great Knife. Other than that, maybe sais could be considered cliché.
Usually, if I'm in a battle scenario, I go with my trusty bat or whatever's handy in the room.

With all this talk of weapons I have to mention this conversation I had once. I was talking to my mate about what weapon combinations haven't been done in films. We came up with a couple but we really liked the idea of two people with baseball bats, but neither of them was going to let the opponent beat them down. In my head I can imagine all sorts of blocking and dodging! I think I'd like to use a character with a bat soon...
See that's what roleplays need: originality! People need to start thinking: what can I bring to this roleplay?

I have used them before, but in my opinion they're things that can be dropped after the battle is over. For some reason i am reminded of this article: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/List_of_weapons_that_don't_exist_but_should More specifically this weapon: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/List_of_melee_weapons_that_don't_exist,_but_should#Double-sided_folding_chair

EVERYBODY who's in a fighting RP uses some sort of rare or legendary weapon. That Quadspork looks sort of useful though. http://uncyclopedia.org/images/2/23/Sword_Types.jpgI like that Crossbowblade too.
