Hmmm, tricky question, only because I don't know how you are asking it.
You can be smart and religious, that is a given. You can be religious and accepting of other people's beliefs without conflict too.
People don't regard religious people as stupid. Weak maybe, but not stupid.

Yes, you can be intellectual and religious as long as you do not allow religion to interfere with the intellect. The problem is that most people that are intelligent or intellectual and religious let their religious beliefs interfere.
The two are mutually separate and should remain as such. They can be together, but not be used together..... unless used in cases like this.

I'm a former Catholic turned Kemetic(Egyptian) Orthodox. In such of my faith, intelligence is highly integrated into the faith. What I found with being Catholic was you were deemed a heretic if you questioned things in trying to learn more. One such thing I learned through study is that Christianity in general adopted many things from the Egyptian culture. Such as saying Amen. Amen is actually the name of an Egyptian Sun God associated with Ra. Also their creation story is based off of the Egyptian story of creation. And the Spanish Inquisition, the slaughter of the native Americans because of wanting to forcefully convert them. Tons of skeletons in the closet that they don't want to reveal. I have nothing against those who practice the faith, nor anyone who practices any kind of faith that promotes a good way of life, but I do not like following a religion that wants to restrict your knowledge or demonizes other's faiths, such as Wiccans and Buddhists, because it isn't their faith.

xBloodyxValentinex Here's another question for ya - why, when people say they're religious, does everyone assume they believe in the Christian's God? Honestly, I consider myself to be religious, and intelligent, but I'm Wiccan. But, if someone asked me if I was religious, most would assume I'm Christian or Catholic or I follow some form of the monotheistic religions, mainly believing in 'God' (as apposed to things like Buddha, etc., ya know) And I hate it when people explain things saying "God meant it to be this way" Or simply using their 'God' as support to something, assuming everyone else also believes in that same god. heart Blessed Be heart OMG! That's me exactly. I was scrowlin down reading all this, wondering what I was going to post and I read your post and it was EXACTLY what I was going to say. Yea, I have that same promblem. People ask me if I'm religiouse and I'm like 'Extremely'. The next thing I know they think I'm an Evangelical. It drives me insane, but I guess it's just our society. The thing that bugs me about some Christians,is that sadly it seems to be the mass majority of them, they explain why they beleive somthing. I once took on an entire forum of Christians about gay marriage, women sumbission, and a wide range of issues. None of them could explain why it's the best way to live. I suppose that makes me think their stupid... But none of them I would say were rednecks. I just think they were bad at philosiphy and debate. Now, that doesn't mean that I think every Christian is stupid. I just think sometimes Christians get into this religious stupor, of "God is number one!" so we don't need to learn why he sais somthing or why we should do somthing. We just need to mindlessly do it and tell everyone else they need to do it or else their going to hell! Then again, their are TONS of Christians. You can't classify them all.

smart and religios are personalities hard to find in one person, but not unheard of, your problem is not necesarly the "non-religous" people, but the religos ones, who answer every question with a quote from the bible, now i'm not saying everyone does, and i wouldnt mind once in a while, but too many people pull quotes, to explain, what they truley know nothing about. now before you ask, i am religos, but not in the way most would like...i am a sephidross.....don't ask.......and i do not use the "Book of Men-Dia" to answer my questions, i use my head, as it seems you would like to do. My advice is simply say proudly your religon, but dont use your "religos book" (what ever it may be) to answer your own question.....

i am a member of the Progressive Christian guild (well my other account is).
we try to do our best to be both honest and thoughtful, yet faithful.
so we catch hell from both sides, from intellectuals for being "stupid" enough to have faith, and from believers for being so "worldly" that we want to use our minds!

Christians bother me for many reasons. Sadly, I haven't met many intellectual christian people.
People seem to have distaste for People of the Islamic religion, for obvious sterotypes. But a muslim has never approached me and tried to convert me to their religion like many christians do. Nor have they offered to 'pray for me' like christians do too. I find it EXTREMELY offensive that someone would offer to pray for me because they think I am headed into some sort of wrong direction with my life. That isn't right. I have the choice and freedom to belong to any religion I please, and just because I am agnostic does not mean I am going to any place bad. I am a very spiritual person, you don't need religion to be spiritual.
It is evangelistic christians who believe that the world is twelve thousand years old that are the unintelligent ones. They probably would care if science did prove no god exists, as long as it's in the bible, it's law.

Religion has always slowed down advancements in things such as science and medicine. but as new decoveries are being found its starting to lessen. people are afraid that the thing theyve been tought all their lives is wrong when you need to realize that being narrow minded isnt good and that nothin science is going to say will prove you wrong.

The Stupidest Angel I, personally, am Catholic. So before you lynch mob me for saying that, I just wanted to know why is it that people assume someone's a dumb redneck when they state that they're religious? I know this doesn't apply to everyone's views, but from what I've seen in real life and on the internet, people treat those with religious beliefs like total idiots. So the basic question, can someone be an intellectual and religious? Never had someone do that to me, and i'm very openly religious. And yes, of course someone can be both smart and religious, although I do not have the time to exlain it at this moment.

This might seem dumb, but I kinda don't know what you mean by intellectual and religious. As far as people baiting other people with different religions (or religious in general) goes, I don't really know, but I'm guessing maybe it's because they're afraid of people who are different, or maybe they somehow feel threatened by it. *shrugs* Human nature is puzzling.
