All worthy reasons.
If it weren't for guilds, I don't think I'd still be on the site.
That said, there are still a few pockets of sanity in the main forums. Gaia International is great, although a bit slow moving. Heaven isn't bad, either. The food & drink forum and healthy living forum are fine, too.
I'm on the fence about the money thing. It does feel like every new feature is rolled out primarily as a cash grab, and it's too bad they can't be more choosy about their sponsors. A lot of them are ******** tacky. Still, in order for the site to run, they need money. Servers and the staff to support them are expensive, and paying for the developers and artists probably costs a small fortune. I'm pretty doubtful that they make much of a profit, and would guess that the site as a whole barely manages to break even.
My biggest hate-on right now is probably alchemy. The whole alchemy system is a sick joke. I've played the marketplace some, and it can be profitable, but I've never been as dedicated as the hardcore exchangers. I don't have the time or inclination to watch the MP like a hawk for hours. Those guys have more gold than Gambino. So when the vast majority of them say that alchemy is ridiculous, you know that for like 99% of the users on the site, it might as well be impossible.
The main forums are full of trash, but I don't feel that that's a Gaia issue. It is pretty sad, though. The same stuff is pretty prevalent almost everywhere online. You've got the dumbasses who barely have a passing acquaintance with the English language, and then you have the cynical, sneering jackasses (often trolls) with a terrible attitude. It's like it's cool to be a misanthropic a*****e or something.
*continues rambling* There was this time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville... I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

*runs in flailing* Guys guys guys. I've been watching Torchwood. And just, oh gods. Gwen, you silly little awkward, confused, morally mixed up, kind of stupid but good hearted girl. I don't know if I like or hate you. Jack, you are golden. You should cross universes and meet up with Mal, everything would be great.
Also, watching several episodes in one night, and realizing that oh s**t it is ten weeks to otakon and I don't even have patterns ********, lets rush to make some and doodle out some plans, drink tea and eat ice cream all at the same time probably makes for the jumbled state of this. ..That was a really long run-on. Sorry.
In terms of Gaia and money... I was okay with it at first, I understood it, even kind of enjoyed it. To an extent, I still understand it. I understand the cash shop, I understand special items.... But I don't like feeling as if I'm playing a micro charge video game. If I wanted that, I would do that. I definitely wish more attention was given to guilds. As far as the forums go, well. I have to remember that this site IS primarily used by 13-16 year olds. Supposedly.
