Tianara's smile was fond and gentle - Nezik had been closer to her than her own adopted brothers growing up. She adored him as she would any big brother. "Yes," she replied. Her voice was casual, but her eyes were worshipful. "I've never seen him really sad - he always bounces back." She wondered what it would take to quiet Nezik's naturally bright and optimistic soul, and shivered. She didn't want to know.
There was a shift when Joshua reached out for Katalina with his mind. After a few minutes, a sleepy voice answered. "Hmm? Oh, Joshua." There was a slight smile in the words. "It's no problem, my friend. Just be more careful next time when you rush in to save the damsel in distress."
With a yawn, she settled back into sleep.

He murmured, drawing back. He'd let her sleep. God knew they all needed it. He yawned, covering his mouth, and glanced at the window. He way wishing dawn would come faster. Maybe then he could relax. As it was, he was too worried about another attack. "Do the Dark Ones always attack during the night?" He asked curiously, something to pass the time until the inevitable attack. There was the slightest hint of a glow - Katalina had heard him, but didn't feel like waking up enough to properly respond. So she simply acknowledged it and slept on.
Tianara's attention seemed to have relaxed slightly. When Joshua addressed her, she glanced back instead of answering with her eyes out the window. "Yes," she replied. "It's a simple reason, really. I mean, it's much harder to make someone afraid and miserable and angry during the day, with the light pouring down. It's easier in the dark. I suppose they technically could attack during the day," she mused, "but I've never heard of such a thing happening."

"Many of people's worst fears stem from the dark and what lingers in it. The dark is unknown. And the unknown is feared." He was mostly just thinking aloud now, not really talking to anyone in particular. "And lots are just plain scared of the dark itself, of being unable to see." He glanced at Tianara. "Is there anything you're scared of?" Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara blinked, then laughed. "Lots," she said cheerfully. "Getting tangled up in weeds, failing at life as a human, sharks - had a bad experience with one, it left me somewhat awkward around them..." She grew serious as she continued. "Watching the ocean get polluted and the seafolk get choked out of their home, seeing my family get hurt or die."
With a quiet sigh, she gave him a sad little smile and asked softly, "How about you? Anything that particularly freaks you out?"

"Honestly? People. I hate huge crowds, with people crowding around me. It freaks me out and I start panicking. I like small groups. I'm not so fond of cats either, stuck up things that they are." He lifted one shoulder in a shrug before growing serious. "I guess we share a fear though, of watching the ocean and everything in it die. I hate it. I hate feeling so helpless though I do what I can." Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara smiled softly. Her gaze was warm. "I know how much you do, Joshua," she replied. "If there was one human I had to trust the ocean and my family to, I guess I couldn't do any better than you." It was, to Tianara, the supreme vote of confidence. She would trust him with her home and family - everything that had ever mattered to her. And she would do it without a blink.
He was just safe, to her. Tianara couldn't have said why or how she thought this; she just did.
She blinked when she heard Mac stirring. "It's nothing, Mac," she said gently, her voice soothing. "It'll be dawn soon, and all is well. Go back to sleep - it's all okay."

It meant a lot to him that she would say that. "I try." He murmured softly. He glanced up Mac as the other stirred. "Might as well keep sleeping Mac. Some of us'll get rest then." He added the last part as mostly to himself. He knew he was going to have to sleep again at some point but he didn't want to leave Tianara alone to face the Dark One - Especially now that he'd conceeded that yes, she was the better choice for a focus point. Tianara gazed mildly out the window. The time for confidences was apparently over. When Joshua finished addressing Mac, however, the girl glanced back with a worried expression on her face. "You should probably go back to sleep as well, Joshua," she said quietly. "Dawn will be coming soon, and I don't feel any hint of the Dark One. I think it may have given up for the night."
Reassuringly, she added, "I'll let the merfolk know if I need help. You should rest."

"There's no reason to leave you alone to fight off the Dark One, if it comes back." It didn't feel right to him, no matter how tired he was. He wanted to help, to do something useful. What really bugged him, more than almost anything, was being helpless to help his friends. Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara looked back. Her eyes were gentle. "It won't come back, Joshua. Dawn is coming. It knows when the night is ending. Go to sleep. All will be well, trust me." Turning back to the window, she began to sing softly, a song in her own tongue. This one was no lullaby, however, just a song. She had not much better to do, considering that she was hoping the other two would shortly be asleep.
She didn't seem inclined to sleep herself, however, despite her assurances. Perhaps this close to dawn, she was just no longer tired.

You fought the thing as well." He would have thought Tianara would be tired. Yet she didn't seem to be and it confused him. He yawned as he waited for an answer. He sighed, knowing he would sleep soon - Whether he wanted to or not. He still wasn't recovered from his own fight with the Dark One, eyelids growing heavy as he tried to fight it. Tianara looked back, a little surprised. "Hmm? Oh," she said, sounding a bit amused. "I told you, I recover quickly from encounters like that - we have to learn to." She shrugged. "I'll sleep later, when there's time. We wake with the dawn, whether we want to or not, and an hour or so is worse than none at all."
She smiled. "So I'll keep an eye out, just on the off chance. You go to sleep for a while." Turning back to the window, she recommenced her song, singing a little softer this time. After a minute or two, she switched to English - seemingly just so that Joshua could understand it. The song was something about greeting the coming of the dawn, and though it didn't sound quite so pretty as it had in her own language, it was still very nice.

He sort of understood, but then he expected that a lot of things about the merfolk and those who lived with them would be like that. He lay down of the bed, cocooning himself in the blanket. His eyes closed as he listened to Tianara sing softly. "Pretty song." He mumbled, clearly already mostly asleep. "Better in other language." He cut himself off with a yawn and snuggled inot the pillow. Soon, he was fast asleep, worn out from the long day and night.
