Tianara had only been listening with half an ear as she'd been concentrating on the meat. But when he held out his hand, she blinked at him. "It's okay," she assured him. Not that she had actually checked, but it didn't hurt anymore, and that had to mean something. She offered him the hand, noticing absently that there was some blood.

Although it was bleeding, it wasn't too bad a cut - she'd just scored herself across the back of her knuckles with the knife. It wasn't too deep, and she hadn't cut anything off, probably more due to blind luck than anything else. It certainly wasn't serious.

Tianara, anxious to get attention off her clumsiness, asked, "So you...scramble them, and then put the other things in?" This sounded like something it might be good to know at some point in her life, like when she actually had to cook for herself.

Tianara was about to ask more questions about this procedure, but was distracted by Joshua's offer to teach her kitchen protocol, whatever that meant. "Okay," she said, watching his every move. It looked like he had his fingers curled back a little, so that the knuckles were against the knife. And while that looked remarkably uncomfortable, she supposed it would help to keep the knife from biting you.

She looked on for a little while longer, then said at last, "Okay, I...think I got it. Once you're holding it right, you cut it like that?" She pointed at the neat little chunks Joshua was making.

Tianara watched with great interest as he went through the motions of throwing everything in. When he went to get the meat, she was careful to move the knife away - she'd learned now that it was quite a violent little thing. Curiously, she picked up the can the pineapples had come from and examined it. She'd never seen such a thing. It was mildly fascinating.

Looking over as he dumped everything into the pan and started pushing it around with a spatula, she came to his side and watched the cooking process with interest. "Did you forget this?" she asked, picking up the bowl containing the cheese and setting the can down in its place. "Or does this go somewhere else?"

"Oh," said Tianara, convinced - and deciding to stop asking questions, since they all seemed to make her sound like an idiot. When she was handed a plate, she took it and followed him. Upon sitting at the table and hearing his question, she blushed mildly. "Well...um...not precisely," she admitted. "I mean, I've seen them, and theoretically I know what they're for. But I've never actually...well, used one myself."

She looked down at the tined silver object, frowning. The merfolk had utensils of sorts, but they were nothing like what humans used. Not for the first time, Tianara wished she had just been born a mermaid. Everything would have been much easier.

But then...she might never have met Joshua. And Mac, she added hastily to herself. And Aria and Allen. If she wasn't human, she might never have met them.

Maybe there were a few perks.

Tianara looked blank. What did he mean, right- or left-handed? She tended to use either, depending on what was closer to the object in question. Examining the placement of his hand carefully, she attempted to copy it with her right hand, then her left. Either way, it didn't feel right.

"This doesn't feel right," she said at last, repeating her earlier thought. "Am I holding it wrong?" But, looking at his hand, it looked like she was doing the same thing he was. She couldn't imagine what she was doing wrong.

Tianara frowned at his question, but obediently put down the fork. "Well," she said, seeming to concentrate, "I use whichever hand is closer to what I want to pick up or use or whatever, I guess." She held up both her hands, looking at them as though the answer was written on her palms. "Does it matter a lot?" she asked timidly, as though worried this was a human custom the merfolk had forgotten to teach her. She looked honestly frightened; it seemed almost like she expected Joshua to say Yes, yes it does, you can never pass as a normal human unless you know this.

Once again, she tried picking up the fork in either hand, but they were beginning to shake now and she had to put it down before she dropped it. "I'm going to be a complete failure out here, I know it," she said gloomily, staring down at her hands once again.

Tianara frowned over this information for a few minutes before nodding hesitantly. Ambidextrous was a word that made no sense to her, but Joshua made her at least vaguely get the idea. She could use either hand if she wanted to. And apparently that was a good thing. Well, she would have to take his word for it. He hadn't lied to her yet, after all.

"Okay," she said, carefully picking up the fork once again. "So you hold it like this?"
