Physical Description: Veena is by no means a tall woman, though she does hold more muscle than a woman her age seemingly should - after all, one needs to be able to wrangle a fussy patient into their place - her medium brown hair is curly and constantly pulled from her face in various fashions. She has kind brown eyes, though this kindness doesn't always extend to the rest of her.
Personality: Veena respects hard work much more than raw 'talent' or ego - after all, she's built her entire life on it. Diligent, there is no task this woman starts that she will set aside until it is done, and any task that is worth doing in Veena's eyes, is worth doing to completion, even if done slowly. Nothing is done to anything less than the letter in the hands of this woman and anybody charged into her care can rest assured that they are in more than capable ones.
However, her bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired. While motherly, Veena doesn't sugarcoat things, and will simply spell out problems in the most clinical and succinct of terms as required. She wants you to get better, but she doesn't want you to underestimate what work will have to be put in beyond herself - or what the odds you're facing are. Your baby will recover just fine, but it will struggle for a time. Brutal honesty comes to Veena exceedingly easily.
She also has absolutely no tolerance for bullshit. Any apprentices still in the woman's care have at least a handful of stories about others still who goofed off and didn't give their chosen craft the respect it deserved....and were sent away for it. Patients who try to play coy or lie their way around symptoms will find themselves either manhandled into submission - or tossed out until they're ready to let her do her job. However, nobody can't say she doesn't get a lot done because of this. In fact, after turns and turns of following instructions to the letter, is extremely methodical and has very quick hands.
She is also a quick read, and is often found reading the scrolls of the Weyr that she's allowed to - even if just to see if there's anything else she's missing out on. After all, just because she's 62 doesn't meant that she doesn't still have plenty to learn - or impart.

History: Veena was fortunate in life to be born a third daughter to a well-enough-to-do family in Fort Hold, whom loved her dearly. She was prone to her own bouts of childlike mischief - breaking a few bones and scraping her knees enough time to earn a joke or two about running out of skin to cover her kneecaps. By the time Veena was 8, her oldest sister had run off to become a baker, and her second oldest sister, Meerin, was becoming an apprentice at the Healer Hall. When given the choice between the two, Veena figured she'd seen enough of the inside of the Healer Hall for them to already be somewhat braced to deal with her more seriously.
Being a Healer was much more difficult than just visiting one and she had expected no less. Yet, Veena was only considered an 'adequate' student, especially in the shadow of her older sister who simply excelled at it. Nevertheless, she persisted. While Meerin climbed rank to Journeyman quickly, Veena fell quickly behind her. Despite this, Veena wished her sister no ill will and the two maintained a healthy sibling relationship. Her slow but steady progress allowed Veena to make close friends with the other apprentices who joined and even progressed past her.
Whispers that she may be unsuited to healing did not fall onto deaf ears as Veena crept into her mid 20s and still remained an Apprentice, while her elder sister had already been sent to another hold as an all so capable healer. Still, she persisted.
What she lacked in raw talent, Veena made up for in due diligence. Tasked with assisting a master in a surgical procedure, the man found that he didn't need to relay any instructions to the young woman - she knew the writings nearly by heart and when he needed something it was on hand and when he left the final stitching and clean up in her care, everything was done straight to the letter by the book. When tested, Veena quickly, and without hesitation, was able to recite the writen procedures for all sorts of medicines and wound treatments exactly as written and executed just as neatly.
The surgeon took her under his wing for the rest of the season, putting her to the task of assisting in surgery, but also helping with smaller wounds. While she certainly lacked the confidence and perhaps the bedside manner of most Journeymen, he was certain that put into the task, she would do well on her own. And so, at the not-so-tender age of 27, Veena was released from apprenticeship.
However, she didn't stray far from home or the up to date teachings of the Healer Hall, remaining in Fort Hold for quite some time as she practiced her skills, never straying from the writings of the Hall. At least, not until she got married to a Trader from Western Hold. In her mid 30s, Veena's marriage to her husband, Taikal, seemed to be a whirlwind affair and soon enough she was practically whisked across the world to a completely new one.
And Western had it's own slew of new things to tend do that she'd seen in no scrolls in the past. Veena found close kinship with local healers more versed with local illnesses, but also in the uses of plants she'd never heard of before! Certainly, this type of knowledge wasn't completely unknown back at the Healer Hall even after all of this time on the Western Continent? Following the birth of her first child - a son - she began to compile this local knowledge, testing it carefully so that she knew her writings were good. After the birth of her third child, she returned to Fort on a visit to compare her writings with those she had so memorized.
Her memory had not failed her. At 43 years old, Veena contributed her writings to the very library she had learned from - and ultimately her knowledge to the students of the Hall for several years between visits before permanently moving back to Western at the age of 52. She would return with the title of 'Master'.
Though such a title did not slow her ways - after all, she had three little ones to tend after (though by then they were going into their teens).
Life slowed down for a time - and then came Thread and with it, Veena and her family to Western Weyr to offer her diligent and well trained hands.
