He would be the bad guy but he met the heroes while he was bored and they were getting chased so he killed the real bad guys and became a not-so-bad but not-so-good guy

I can see Richard trying to take over the world but so far they haven't ran into any other villain-ish people, warlords dragons etc but no villains that'd compare to Richard
