Distracted by her pain, Findith did not see the clump until too late. It tangled onto her wing, and she let out an ichor-spraying squeal before flinging herself between for a moment. Now her wing AND tongue hurt, and faint trembles swam along her body, leaving her unable to focus through the haze of the pain.

Vith shook off the pain and finally they got back into action. A quick jump Between to avoid some Thread found them reappearing right in front of more. Vith managed to flame it down before banking hard to get back into place.

As they flew back, Vith noticed thread coming their way just a moment too late. He grit his teeth but kept going with a jump Between to rid himself of the Thread.

Once back in position, K’mar had Vith call for more Firestone. They were pretty low and we’re getting ready to cycle back up to the high altitude so he wanted to be stuffed to the brim. A clean exchange was made before they got back to business.

Chowing down on the new firestone a bit too enthusiastically, Vith bit his tongue again and reopened the wound from earlier. K'mar grimaced in sympathy, his own tongue aching thanks to their bond.

R'bin's Threadscore still throbbed, but it didn't seem like the Thread had survived between. In other words, it didn't feel as if a burning worm of fire was burrowing deeper into his torso. It still hurt like mad though, and R'bin swore anytime he had to shift position. There was also the matter of his compromised leathers. That was a very real problem he'd have to look into rectifying after Fall.
How are you holding up? he asked Huarangith. After all, the dragon had been pretty badly scored early on, and he was still flying and flaming without complaint.
I'm not as tired as I thought I'd be, Huarangith replied, a little surprised to find that was the case. Considering how brutal things had been at the high altitude, he would have expected that his strength would be flagging by now. He was proud that he was still hanging in there, still feeling like he could carry on.

Buoyed by his dragon's strength, R'bin reached deeper into his own well of energy in search of a second wind. The Threadscore wasn't fatal, just painful, and he would see the healers after Fall and have them confirm it. Until then, there wasn't anything for him to do except to keep on flying and fighting.
Huarangith continued flying with the wing,turning his head in slow sweeps to breathe flame at any errant strands of Thread which happened to make it through the wings above. There seemed, in this moment anyway, to be fewer of them, which was a relief. He appreciated having the time to collect himself and simply fly in formation while flaming. This was much more like how drills went, and he was glad to have a little bit of easy work.

Really, this flying was so much like drills Huarangith felt himself actually relaxing and roaring in triumph when he emerged from between just in time to catch a perfectly positioned sliver of Thread with his flame. If he had been a dragon of a more suspicious mindset, he might have thought that this was too easy, but he was not a suspicious dragon by nature, and he was also too much in the moment to give too much thought to the fact that they were not yet through this shift, and still had one more turn at the high altitude before Fall was over.
R'bin was thinking about those things though, and he was doing his best not to worry. Huarangith was flying well despite his injuries, and R'bin's own injuries were not the sort which would prevent them from fulfilling their duties. At least not unless they got worse, which was possible, he supposed, but not hugely likely. He was being careful. It would be nice, though, if they didn't run out of firestone again. The thought of having to catch a flung bag of rocks and then secure it to his harnesses was enough to make him wince.
This is just like bullseyeing wherries! Huarangith enthused to R'bin.

Watch that thermal! another rider pair called to R'bin and Huarangith a few seconds before they hit.
Huarangith angled his body so that the upward draft would not push him heavenward quite so easily and used his bulk to hold their position in formation, even managing to scorch a ribbon of Thread at the same time.
Good thing I'm not a blue! the brown pointed out. This must be an exhausting Fall for them. And the greens.
Probably, R'bin agreed. But it's not as though you're not working hard.
I know, Huarangith answered. That's what I mean. I have to put forth this much effort, so it must take much more effort on their parts. I hope our wingleader commends them for it later.

More stone, Huarangith requested, waiting for confirmation from R'bin that he had more ready before turning his head to gulp it down. He chewed noisily and coughed an experimental gout of flame, just to make sure all was in readiness.
Good? R'bin asked, checking that everything was all right, and his dragon wasn't about to choke to death or something.
Good, Huarangith confirmed. I'm ready to save the world.
Good thing that's our job, R'bin replied, smiling. He liked how confident Huarangith got when they were fighting Thread. So often the dragon doubted his own instincts and creativity. It was really good to see him in his element and excelling. Earlier Threadscores notwithstanding.
Ash struck Y'vel directly in the face, and the rider winced slightly, ducking away. Fortunately, it wasn't anything too major.

Desrath was a little tired, but that was no great surprise given her diminutive size. She flapped her wings and carried on.

They flew and fought on but it was hard to ignore the throbbing pain and the dripping ichor, especially as Vith flamed. But they had a job to do and they weren't going to let a little bitten tongue get in the way of it.
