I can see that working. How exactly are they rivals?
Well he or she would always be tormenting him of his squiddyness and finding ways to make him miserable. they should be very threatening and mean, a real formidible slightly disturbingly scary person.
The plot device that made the rival hate him is up to the writers.
@Starlaa- Sorry but the and actions of the charachters, thusly how much they appear in the story, is also up the writers.

I know he's afraid of people finding out who he is.... Was it decided that he's afraid of sushi/seafood things, or what?
If so, I think that's enough. He can be mildly timid at other things, but nothing else phobia level.

People know he's squiddy.... if just embarrasses him to be 'squiddy' in public, as he is always ridiculed for it. Let's say you have a birth deformity, per se, a strange purple lump protruding from your back. Everybody knows it's there, but you still keep it hidden since people make fun of you if they're reminded you have it.
That's sort of what I figured his situation was. (maybe also because of question nine.) Does it sound good?
Sorry for the analogy.
Anyway Yes, I definately saw this character as a little timid. He can be lots more open when with his friends, but on his own he's probably quite shy.
