Tianara's gratitude shone in her face. For a moment, she had to resist hugging him. Finally, someone who trusted her to know her own limits. Someone she could count on, entirely. "Yes," she agreed fervently. "Let's go." She turned towards the tunnel.
Her movements had become more confident, and now she led Joshua through the tunnel with a kind of absent grace. Rounding a corner, she paused. "This way," she said softly. "I...my...Mrian is nearby. I think he was probably speaking to Mother."
She guided Joshua into a side corridor that was nearly invisible from any other angle. It was awkward there - barely big enough for both of them, but if it meant avoiding Mrian (who was probably in a temper), Tianara could live with it. She just hoped it wasn't too awkward for him.
Glancing back at him, she asked as softly as possible, "You okay?"

After Mac had followed Aria out, he quickly side-stepped a nurse walking by them. He's not used to being in hospitals, as he never got sick or injured enough to be hospitalized. He was wondering if maybe Aria was wanting to go and do something, "Hey, you wana do something?" he asked.

Shadow Hunter, Silent Hunter The forest is yours alone Night Hunter, Quiet Hunter None disturb your hunt The obvious gratitude in Tianara's eyes sent a warm rush through Joshua. He followed her, absently noting the grace she moved with, one that hadn't been present on land. When she paused, he looked puzzled, wondering why. Then she explained. He willingly slide into the tiny corridor. Anything to avoid another confrontation with Mrian. Joshua didn't like fighting. He blushed slightly as he realized how close they were but nodded. "I'm fine." He murmured, trying to keep his voice down. If it meant avoid Mrian, he could put up with a little awkwardness.
Aria glanced at him, thinking. Her gaze shifted back to the door of Allen's room, then she nodded. "Yeah. If I stay here I'm just going to start worrying again." She looked back at Mac, then began heading towards the entrance of the hospital. "I need something to take my mind off this." She wasn't sure what she wanted to do, but she needed something to distract her. Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara merely nodded - her brother was too close now to risk any more words. He would know that the merfolk didn't speak in English, after all. Briefly, she wished she had taken the time to teach Joshua more of their tongue. Well, now that she knew it was important, she would do that.
She had caught the blush out of the corner of her eye, and gave him a curious sidelong look, but didn't really make anything of it. After a few minutes, there was a rush of water past them, like someone had gone by. A few minutes more, and Tianara relaxed a little. Glancing back up at him, she nodded tentatively. "I think he's gone," she breathed, so softly that it was almost impossible to hear.
Leading him back out, she paused and glanced behind them, the way Mrian had gone. "All right," she muttered, "I think it's okay. C'mon, though."
She moved faster, and eventually they came back into a different cavern, where Katalina and the blonde mermaid Joshua had met before were waiting. Tianara smiled at him once before going to embrace her mother, all apprehension seemingly gone. After a second, she stood back and tilted her head. A stream of the bubbly words came from her, and she listened as her mother replied. Then, shaking her head gently, Tianara beckoned Joshua forward.

He found himself holding his breath as he felt the water rush past them. He released his breath as a sigh once it seemed they were in the clear. As soon as they were out of the small corridor, Joshua put a bit of distance between the two of them, trying to rid himself of a small bit of lingering awkwardness.
He followed Tianara to the cavern where Katalina and the blonde mermaid waited. He grinned cheerfully at Katalina, giving her a small wave. Then he turned his attention to Tianara as she spoke to her mother. Once more, the familiar frustration of being left out and not knowing rippled through him, but he kept a firm hold on the feeling. He was learning after all. He had to be content with that for now. When Tianara beckoned him forwards, Joshua hesitated for a second, then moved closer. He smiled at the blonde mermaid, unsure of what had just been said, though he assumed something of it had been about him. Tianara gave him a quick look even as she smiled from one of them to another. Her gaze lingered briefly on his face, as much as to say Please make this count. Then she gestured to the boy, still speaking to her mother. The blonde eyed him warily, speaking rapidly to Tianara. Katalina had quietly absented herself - apparently she didn't consider this her business.
With a sigh, Tianara turned to Joshua. "She would like to know how you intend to...Mother, I can't say that!" she protested. The blonde mermaid said something again - possibly rephrasing herself. Tianara took up the thread once again. "She would like to know how...Mother...how you would be any protection for me. Being her...Mother...since I'm her only daughter, she doesn't want to risk...I am not saying that." She seemed to consider how to rephrase it. Then she sighed again. "She doesn't want to risk my well-being on the protection of a stranger." Her eyes begged him to understand - her mother was somewhat paranoid and overprotective, and Tianara knew that it could seem insulting.
"While she's sure you're well-intentioned, she just...Mom! She doesn't approve of me flinging myself out of the cavern and straight into the middle of a war," the girl finished in a rush.

Shadow Hunter, Silent Hunter The forest is yours alone Night Hunter, Quiet Hunter None disturb your hunt Joshua found himself chuckling quietly as he listened to Tianara find the right way to say what was being said. He couldn't help but be amused though he wondered what it was exactly that she wasn't wanting to say. He glanced at Tianara, a bemused expression in his amber eyes. He took no offense to the words, knowing the blonde mermaid was still the girl's mother - No matter that they were two different species. And apparently mothers were all the same, no matter the species.
He sobered up though as she finished speak. He hesitated before answering, giving the question real thought. When he answered, it was slowly and carefully, thinking of each thing before he said it. He didn't want to accidently say the wrong thing. "Right now, we need all the help we can get. What would Tianara do if she were to stay here? Worry?" He glanced at the girl apologetically before continuing. He knew his next words might be a little rude, but he had to try and convince the blonde. "Chances are, she'll sneak out and do something drastic on her own. With me.....With me and Katalina around - among others - we can focus her energies on something productive and help keep her from doing something stupid."
Joshua looked at the blonde mermaid seriously. "On the surface, she can be useful. She knows about the merfolk. I know about humans. We can work together and do what needs to be done. I won't let anything happen to her." It was hard to doubt how serious he was. He didn't want anything to happen to Tianara. He knew this was a war that was starting, but he would do whatever he could to protect those precious to him. That mean Tianara - among others such as Katalina, Nezik, and heck, even the Siren siblings.

((OOC: Yes. Very. heart I love it.))
The blonde's grey gaze remained steady on him for several long minutes. She spoke quietly, but there was an undertone of steel that was audible even through the musical, bubbly clicking of the mertongue. Tianara probably wouldn't even have to translate. Her meaning was clear. She understood he was serious, and appreciated his words, but she simply didn't trust that her daughter would be safer - and far more productive - on the surface.
"She says there are things I could do here," Tianara translated quietly. "Possibly not as important-seeming as what is being done back at the surface, but there are others who can do the surface work. Surely there is someone more...Mom, I..." She trailed off, only to look down and resume as her mother's eyes met hers. "Someone more qualified than me, since I have no experience of the human world yet. And..."
She looked very weary. "She says that..." The girl looked at her mother. "Just give me a moment, will you, Joshua?" Gently, she reached out and took hold of her mother's hands so that they were facing one another, and for a few minutes they spoke in their own tongue - Tianara's voice was earnest, pleading, belief ringing in every word. Her mother's responses were less easy to define.
After a little while, Tianara let go of her mother's hands, and they both looked back at him. The blonde spoke for a moment, and Tianara nodded softly. "She says that if something seems to be going wrong, she wants you to send me back. That if there's a threat, she wants me to come home." The girl took a deep breath. "She's trying - she says she is trusting you as far as she can, Joshua. With one of the beings most...Mom," this said in a tone of soft awe, rather than the irritation or embarrassment of before, "...most precious to her in the world. And she says...Do not make her regret it."

Shadow Hunter, Silent Hunter The forest is yours alone Night Hunter, Quiet Hunter None disturb your hunt Joshua resisted the urge to sigh as he heard the blonde mermaid speak. It was clear she didn't trust him, but then again, why should she? Who was he but a simple human, dragging her daughter off to the middle of a war zone? His eyes were grave, listening to Tianara speak. It didn't sound like they were making any progress in convincing the mermaid.
He nodded at Tianara as she took her mother's hands and began speaking. He drifted back a foot, giving them space. His amber eyes watched them absently, completely lost at the moment. He had a general idea as to what the girl might be saying but no real idea. He waited patiently, knowing that to interrupt now could be a bad idea and totally ruin everything they were working for.
When the pair looked back to him, Joshua slid forwards again, part of the conversation once more. He listened to the terms, a small flicker of hope appearing in his eyes. Could she be......She was! She was letting Tianara stay on the surface. He nodded sharply, his amber eyes grateful. "Thank you." He told the blonde gratefully. He could see how hard it was for her to trust him. "I won't make you regret it. I'll keep her safe." Reaching out, he rested one hand on Tianara's shoulder, smiling at her briefly. The blonde only nodded once. There was something odd in her gaze as she looked from Joshua back to Tianara. The girl seemed a little bewildered for a moment, and then she looked down at Joshua's hand on her shoulder and the metaphorical lightbulb came on over her head. Glancing back up at her mother, she spoke for a little while, and the mermaid nodded, bubbling back at her. This seemed to be a private conversation, as once they were finished Tianara made no effort to explain what they'd been saying, although she did return his quick smile.
Very gently, the mermaid drifted forward and cupped her daughter's face in her hands. Murmuring a few more words, she turned and left them. There was already the beginnings of grief in the grey eyes when she vanished.
After a tense moment, Tianara sighed. "That did not go well," she muttered. "So now that I've broken my mother's heart and made her certain that she'll never see me again, shall we go?" The question was mildly ironic - it wasn't really like they had many other options.
Katalina approached from a different tunnel, looking between them. "All right?" she asked.
Tianara nodded. "Yeah, for now," she said. "We should go, though."

Shadow Hunter, Silent Hunter The forest is yours alone Night Hunter, Quiet Hunter None disturb your hunt Joshua noticed the glance at his hand, resting on Tianara's shoulder. Quickly, he withdrew it and backed up a pace, wondering if he'd done something wrong. He looked confused as the pair spoke and even more so when the girl didn't explain anything. He sighed, watching the blonde mermaid. Did nothing ever seem to go well?
He looked at Tianara, startled by her word. "Never see you again?" He echoed, baffled. "Why not?" It didn't make sense to him. Why would she say something like that? Surely she would see her mother again at some point. The blonde seemed to care deeply for Tianara, so why would she refuse to see her daughter.
Joshua glanced over to Katalina as she reappeared. At her question, he sighed and shrugged. Were they alright? He wasn't sure right now. That hadn't gone as well as it could have. Beneath the Blood moon The forest you watch Beneath the Blood sky The forest you hunt

Tianara looked amused, in a sad sort of way. "She thinks she's never going to see me again because she's sure that she's made a terrible mistake and I'm going to die," she explained. "Usual mother thing." She shrugged it off, smiling a little. "So we'll just have to be extra careful. I'd hate to prove her right."
Katalina glanced between them, frowning a bit. "Why do I feel like I missed something?" she mused. "Ah well. Come on, you two - we've deserted Narcis and the kids, and left them to face Mac and Aria and whoever else comes along on their own." She had a teasing lilt to her voice, and Tianara managed to crack a smile.
The mermaid led the way out of the tunnel - Tianara seemed content to follow along behind her, beside Joshua. Eventually, she turned to him and said softly, "You did great. If you hadn't been there, I don't think I could have convinced her. So..." She trailed off, uncertain of herself. "I guess...Thank you."
There was more she wanted to say, but she didn't know what it was. Probably something along the lines of thanking him for coming through for her - again.

Shadow Hunter, Silent Hunter The forest is yours alone Night Hunter, Quiet Hunter None disturb your hunt "Oh...." Joshua's confusion evaporated as Tianara explained. He nodded, determined not to prove the mermaid right. He didn't want to lose anyone close to him, though he knew there was a very good chance one or more of them would die. But he would rather not think of that.
At Katalina's words, he shook his head, a small smile on his face. But he followed the mermaid out of the tunnel. Random thoughts drifted through his mind as he swam, only half-way paying attention to where they were going. He trusted Katalina to get them out without any issues. He was brought back to reality by Tianara speaking.
His head tilted to the side as he considered her words. "Did I actually help?" He wondered aloud. "She doesn't trust me." His tone made it clear he assumed that to be a fact. "You seemed to do most of the convincing. I'm not sure what I said made any difference." Maybe it was just him though. But he couldn't help but think Tianara would have been able to do it on her own. It certainly seemed like the blonde mermaid didn't trust him in the slightest, making his words completely useless. Tianara smiled gently. "You let her see you, and let her see that you're serious about sti--" She paused, blushed a little, rephrased herself. "About protecting me if you have to. And more important, she knows that by bringing you here, and you coming, we've proven that we trust each other." She glanced at him, wondering if he understood. "It wasn't so much what you said," she said softly. "It was that it mattered enough to you that you said it."
She shrugged at his next words. "No, she doesn't trust you," she replied. "You're not one of hers, and she's afraid of most humans. But she thinks you're honest, and she thinks that you believe what you say. That doesn't make it true, of course, but she thinks that you think it is. And that's good enough." She smiled sadly. "She'll learn to trust you once all this is over, if we've managed to keep ourselves both alive."
Katalina pushed the boulder aside as they arrived at the entrance, and the group came out into the deep, murky waters. The young mermaid looked back, tilting her head a little. "Are we ready to go," she inquired patiently, "or do you two have something else to say to each other or someone else before we leave?"

He supposed it was true, when you thought of it like that. Seeing her blush though, he wondered what she'd been about to say. What had made her blush? But he didn't ask, knowing there were times when he didn't want to explain why he was blushing. So he just ignored it and nodded.
"It'd be nice if we could all just trust each other. But that's impossible." He murmured, then sighed. He knew that was just an idealist notion, one that could never real. There were people that the merfolk shouldn't trust. Which made it hard to convince them of the ones they should trust.
When Katalina spoke, he jumped slightly, looking up at her. With a quick glance at Tianara, he shook his head. "I'm good to go." He didn't include Tianara in his words because he couldn't read her mind. Was there someone else she wanted to say good bye to or anything?
