The tiger that shouldn't be....is....

Joshua sighed and looked away. He didn't really want to ask, but someone had to say it some point. Sooner or later, people would start thinking it. "Is it possible....." He started again, then paused before pushing onwards. "Could someone from the merfolk have helped?" He asked quietly. "One of the merfolk would be able to match Katalina in speed. But they wouldn't have to, because she wouldn't feel threatened by one of her own."

He really, really hated saying it. But it had to be said. They couldn't ignore a possibility simply because they didn't like it. Every option had to be explored. It was the only way to really find the truth.

The sick dread bloomed. Tianara closed her eyes, feeling ill and miserable. "I want to say no," she said softly. "I wish I could say no. But...I have to say yes. Yes, someone could have. Everyone knew that Sorry and Narcis and the two young ones were the main spearhead of the effort to stop a war. Anyone who...who would want a war..."

Those like her brother. Those like Mrian, she thought, a shudder going through her. "Anyone who wants a chance at the humans, they might go after Sorry and the others. With them gone, they have a better chance of rallying the merfolk against the humans. And you're right. Sorry would feel perfectly safe around one of her own. She wouldn't even have thought of one of them being a threat." She had to close her eyes against a sudden sting of tears. "Same with Nezik. Even Jinx and Narcis wouldn't have it spring to mind or anything."

She paused to regain control of herself, took a deep breath. "The only good thing about that is that if one of the merfolk did participate in their disappearance, they're alive. There's no word for murderer in the merfolk tongue, did you know? They don't kill one another. I can't remember any stories of them doing so, even. If there was another one of the merfolk involved, they're not dead."

Then she closed her eyes again, still thinking. "If one of ours did this, Joshua, it must have been an older, stronger member of the merfolk - Narcis especially is not all that young himself, and he's quite powerful. Especially if Jinx and Sorry were being threatened, he'd use everything he had to protect them. If he was overpowered...that would take a lot of magic. Or strength. I don't think one person could do it alone."

She flashed back to the Dark One, and the secondary magic she had felt in it. Merfolk could do sleeping spells, she thought, shuddering. Oh God. Oh God. What had she gotten the four of them into?

Joshua shuddered, a dark dread welling up in his chest. He'd been hoping she would say no. Hoping against hope. But no. His worst fears were confirmed. The mess they were in just got a whole lot more tangled.

There was one small bit of hope though - If they were right, then the four were at least alive. Over all, the merfolk were a much more gentle species than humans. It didn't lessen their problems though. "Can't do it alone....." He murmured, thinking aloud. "You said before that the Dark One had help. That something redirected it from me to you. Is it the same person, if it is a person? If they can control the Dark One enough to redirect it, could they send it after the others?" Joshua had found he could think better when he said things aloud, teasing apart the mystery. "And if they have the power to do that, they have the power to subdue and hide the others."

"No, you misunderstood me," murmured Tianara in response, still thinking it through. "The Dark One already wanted to redirect itself from you to me - I was the weaker prey. It was just that you were challenging it, so it would have had to respond to that challenge. Someone else's magic would simply have channeled it away from you and to me, so it could do what it already wanted to do. No control required."

She shook her head. "But the sleeping spell, or whatever it was...that would have taken someone else's magic. Merfolk can do that. I've seen healers do it plenty of times - Rokshiden has done them for me before when I was ill."

At last, she simply sighed, giving up on trying to answer all his questions. "It might be, Joshua. I really can't say more than that. It might be. It's likely it is. But I can't be sure." She rubbed her forehead with her fingertips. "Whoever it is, I don't think they would have sent the Dark One after Sorry and the others. Why would they? Why make it threatening when it could be so easy? All they would have to do is get them alone or in ones or twos, say 'Hey, I found something, it might be important, can you come take a look?'..." Tianara shuddered a little. "And they would go. No questions asked."

She closed her eyes. "Easy enough after that to get them somewhere isolated, get them unconscious or otherwise subdued, and find a way to keep them there. It wouldn't be difficult - I can think of ten different ways even I could do it, if they trusted me enough."

Joshua reached out to put a hand on her shoulder lightly. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to overload you. I was just thinking out loud." He sighed, looking out through the inky waters. "There's too many questions here, even for someone like me. All we have is questions and guesses. No real definite answers." It bothered him. He liked questions sure, but he liked answers even more. And answers was what they needed yet couldn't seem to get.

Tianara relaxed a little bit under his hand, which sort of surprised her. She'd thought she'd still be awkward around him after what had happened before. But, well, there were more important things to worry about now. "That's all right," she said quietly. "They were questions that we needed to think about."

It was probably because she had relaxed that she first felt it as they continued moving. "Stop!" she cried, halting so fast that the water nearly shoved her back again. "Did you feel that?" She looked at Joshua, her eyes wide with something like hope.

Just for a minute, she thought she'd felt Katalina's magical signature. That meant that she was on the right track, and that she might soon be able to find the place where the mermaid had gone off track.

Then again, it might be her own wishful thinking.

Joshua jerked to a stop before he'd even realized what she'd said. He frowned at the question. "Did I?" He asked quietly, searching the feeling. "I-I'm not sure...." It had been just the fleetest feeling of Katalina's magical signature. But he would know the feeling anywhere. "It almost felt like Katalina.......But it's gone now." He cast around with his mind, trying to find it again.

((Ok, now where is everyone atm? I have something planned. And The barrier at Joshua's place has a 1X barrier, which means they can't get in but the Dark Ones can project themselves through it. The 2X barrier at Aria's means that they cannot project and is more powerful.))
Mac sat next to Aria on the couch, interested in the channels, but more interested in discussing the situation of the happenings of late. "Hey, I was wondering..." he began to speak, but suddenly stopped, and had a lifeless stare looking at her. The power surged, and the lights flickered. Mac giggled, "Its right outside and can't get in" he said, "With both of our barriers, its impossible, I'm glad it wont interfere with us in here" he looked up and kept smiling. He snapped back into his conversation with Aria, "Sorry, I was gonna ask if you wanted to watch a movie" he finally asked.

Mike's voice was heard in the shower, "AHAHAHAHAAA!" Laughing triumphantly.

((OOC: Oh, does it?
Also, Joshua and Tianara have left the Sirens' cove. They're looking for the other four, who have vanished.))

Tianara sighed. "Good. If we both felt it, that means I'm not crazy." She reached out again, trying to find what she had felt before. Slowly, carefully, scanning every inch of the way, she began to shift back and forth in the water. Finally, she clicked. "Here," she said, her voice clear and certain. "Right here. Strong emotions just here - that's why her magical signature is still around, while it's faded everywhere else. Surprised, confused, maybe a little amused - not scared, not yet, just surprised. I wonder what they told her."

Her voice grew cold. "Because yes, it was one of ours, Joshua. Must have been. This is where she went off track - right here where I'm standing now. This is where she went off, and I'm standing right here, feeling what she felt, and she wasn't scared. She wasn't scared, she wasn't worried. She didn't think there was anything to fear." Her voice broke. "Damn it, she trusted them."

At last, she shook her head. "Come on. Let's see if we can track her from here."

((Joshua and Tianara went out to look for Katalina, Nezik, Narcis, and Jinx as they've all vanished. They're currently out in the waters somewhere between Joshua's cove and the Siren's cave.))

Aria frowned as the lights flickered. She glanced upwards, feeling the barrier still intact. She sighed in relief at the feeling. She was distracted by the sound of Mike laughing. His laughter made her giggle in amusement. "Well he's certainly pleased." She murmured, then slid off the couch to the floor. She sat cross legged in front of a glass cabinate, filled with movies. "What do you want to watch?" She asked, clearly accepting the idea of a movie. "If it's got mermaids in it, we've got it. If it's got other legends, there's a chance. If it's got nothing to do with either of them, don't hold your breath."

Joshua watched Tianara moving around. He kept his mind open, trying to feel it again. When she declared that she'd found it, he moved closer. Yes. It was fainter to him as he wasn't in the exact spot, but he could feel traces of Katalina. She'd been here. Unpracticed as he was, he had to take Tianara's word on what the feelings were. He was only able to tell that Katalina had been there.

He sighed at the coldness in her voice. "That's what I'd feared....." He murmured sadly. Someone was trying to stop them. One - or maybe more - of the merfolk wanted to let the war happen. It made him sad and angry at the same time to realize that someone had betrayed Katalina's trust. How could they do that to their own kin? He sighed, glancing around the water. "How do we track her?" He asked quietly.

Tianara closed her eyes. "I don't really know," she admitted, frustrated and angry. "I've never done tracking before - not in a real-life situation like this. Not of merfolk. Only ocean children. I'm going to have to give it my best guess." Her mouth quivered slightly before she firmed it, opened her eyes again, and turned in the direction that felt right.

She reached out for Joshua's hand without thinking - she didn't want him to get left behind. Once more, she opened herself to any stray magic around, looking specifically for Katalina's magic. Katalina's, because it was hers that they had found here, and if they found Sorry, Tianara was sure they would find the others.

Oh God, what if she screwed this up?

She wouldn't, that was all. She couldn't afford to.

The faintest wisp of the mermaid's magic came to her. Her eyes darkened, went shadowy and faraway. And she started to move, as obedient as the arrow of any compass.

He pondered at the idea, "Sure, lets watch the Little Mermaid" he said, "its a classic". He had a dopey cat-faced grin as he said it. He certainly looked pleased just being with Aria. "You know the legend got passed down enough to become a movie, maybe watching it will make me remember parts of my past life" he suggested.

"You're best guess is better than nothing." Joshua murmured soothingly. "It's all we have. And I trust you." He said simply, taking her hand. He didn't know why she always reached out to him, but he found he couldn't refuse. He held his breath, watching her search the waters.

When her eyes darkened, he knew she was onto something. Rather than risk distracting her, he kept his mouth shut and followed. He swam beside her easily, watching their surroundings. He knew from before that she wouldn't pay much attention to what was around her, only to what she was seeking.

"Alright." Aria agreed easily, pulling out a well worn case. It was obvious the movie had been watched many times before. "It was my favorite movie when I was little." She said, slipping it into the VHS player and turning on the tv. She rose and padded back to the couch, curling up on the end as the movie started.

Tianara couldn't even hear him - she was lost in her pursuit of the magic, looking for what she needed. The magic was faded, sort of old; it had been several hours since Katalina had passed this way. Much longer and it would have faded entirely. Perhaps that was why the Dark One had been set on their trail - it would have distracted them more than long enough for the trail to go cold.

She pictured Katalina in her mind as she went, bringing back everything she could remember about the pretty mermaid with her amused dark eyes. Making fun of her little brother, being protective of Tianara herself, her gentle voice when she'd spoken with Tianara's mother about Adamantia. The girl's eyes were faraway and distant now, all her mind on the mermaid she was following.

Racing through the water, she totally forgot that there was anyone alongside her. It was just her and the trail. The emotions flooded into her as the magic grew fresher - the surprise and confusion slowly turning into worry, then tension, always with the confusion underlying it. Then, abruptly, a bright flare of fear, shock, pain...

And suddenly, she came up against what felt like a brick wall - so suddenly that she stumbled back a bit. Her eyes, wide and sparkly (she realized she had cried at some point, and couldn't remember when), turned to Joshua. "She wasn't awake any more after this," the girl said softly. "I think she was hit with something - she didn't realize what was going on until right before it happened." She looked around - she didn't recognize this place. "Where are we?"
