The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua frowned at the odd feeling that someone was digging through his mind. He didn't like it and only didn't resist because he didn't want to explain it all. He sighed. "I'm afraid so." He murmured in response.
Between following the voice and staying alert, he managed to catch the cracking sound. He paused, listening again to be certain. He moved closer to the doors, examining them. They were simple fold-in doors, but the trick would be to get them to work. They'd been opened once before - to put the pair in - so he knew there had to be a way. He grasped the small handles, pulling on one half of the door. There was probably a lock or something blocking it, but he had to try it this way, just to be sure. The tiger that should be....isn't....

And here was the heat, even worse than had been on the submarine - absolutely bone-searing. The little whimper on the other side of the door would tell anyone who heard it that those on the other side found it equally painful to the touch. Nevertheless, the cracking sound persisted - whoever was on the other side really, really wanted out now. "No," the voice repeated, clear and strong enough now for Joshua to be able to discern that it was female; thus, probably it was Jinx.
The door creaked, squeaked, rocked a little, but it remained stubbornly in place. Whatever Jinx was doing was not sufficient to get it open. Perhaps it was a similar spell to what Narcis had mentioned was going on with the door to the submarine - it could be opened from the outside only. Once inside, it was as good as a wall.
All movement stopped for a second. "Hurts," the voice explained flatly, regaining a bit more of its personality. Then the attempts started up again. Jinx had to be burning herself severely to keep this up, but she didn't seem to care.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua dropped his hold on the door with a cry. He shook his hands out. That had hurt! Hearing the little whimper, he knew it wasn't just him that was being hurt by the spell. He felt a stab of sympathy for the voice, which he could now guess was Jinx's.
"Leave off for a minute." He told her, examining the door more closely. "Don't hurt yourself anymore. Let me try something." He could see the seam of the door, where it locked into place. "Maybe it can be pried open....." He murmured to himself, looking around at the junk that surrounded him. Finding a long sturdy piece of metal, he used it like a crowbar, jamming one end into the seam of the door and pushing to try and force it open. The tiger that should be....isn't....

"Hurry," Jinx muttered. She seemed a little surprised, which wasn't too weird - this would mark one of the first times she and Joshua had conversed mind-to-mind. It was likely that the normally human-spurning Jinx wouldn't have thought Joshua to be much good at speaking telepathically.
The door shrieked unhappily when Joshua forced the makeshift crowbar into its seam, and actually did inch open a touch. Then it stopped dead, and the cracking sound began again. Jinx's voice spoke up after a second. "See if you can get the end of it through. We can push from both sides."
It was a reasonable thought, and she was probably hoping that the door wouldn't shut on an inanimate object.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... 'I am hurrying!' Joshua thought, but kept it to himself. He ignored the fact that this was the first time he'd spoken telepathically to Jinx. He'd deal with her dislike of him later. Right now, it was more important to get her out.
He began to smile as the door shifted but it quickly turned to a frown when the door stopped. He growled, just barely keeping himself from cursing at the door. Normally Joshua was fairly even tempered but he did not like his friend being held captive.
He barely stopped to consider Jinx's suggestion before thrusting the makeshift crowbar through the crack. It was better than any idea he had right now. "Alright. Let's try it." Once he was sure the Siren had a hold on the metal, he began working at forcing the door open again. They didn't need it open all the way - Just enough to squeeze out through. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Jinx was apparently a lot stronger than she looked - on her first push, the crowbar almost pulled out of Joshua's hands before the strength slackened. Apparently realizing that she had to be a little more careful, she eased up, pushing enough to be useful without making Joshua lose his grip - she hoped.
The door shrieked again, raucously, but unhappily began to slide open once more. Several times it stuck, earning soft curses in the bubbly language from the other side - at least, it was likely that they were curses.
When at last it squeaked open far enough, Jinx gazed out at Joshua with solemn eyes for a minute or two. "Hold it," she told him. Then she disappeared - for a moment. She reappeared, pulling Nezik along with her. The young merman looked confused and dazed, but he at least was also awake. The Siren gripped the bar firmly, holding the door open, and shoved Nezik through. Ignoring the burn, she braced her hands on the door and slid through after him, hissing softly when her sides brushed the door.
Once out, she tilted her head at Joshua before glaring back at the door. "Which way did they go?" she demanded. "I'm going to find him, and I'm going to kill him!" Her tone of voice made it ultimately clear that she was not just venting her frustration. This was an actual threat.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua was surprised at the sudden strength. He'd known the merfolk were strong but he didn't realize just how strong. He tightened his grip on the crowbar, determined not to make this a wasted effort.
As the door slowly slid open, each time it stuck, his own muttered curses joined Jinx's. This was even more frustrating than the submarine had been. Finally, it was open far enough.
He nodded at the instructions and held the door in place, not letting it slide back shut. He was relieved to see Nezik awake, no matter how dazed he was. It was better than being unconscious. Once they were both out, he sighed in relief. He was caught off guard by the sudden anger Jinx rounded on him. He looked around the plane to orrient himself and answer, but he still wasn't sure of the direction. "I'll show you when we get out." He told her, not wanting her to bring that anger on him. "What happened to Nezik? He asked, leading the way out through the small gap in the junk. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Jinx glared briefly, apparently not thinking this an acceptable answer, but then sighed and shrugged irritably. "Fine," she muttered - aloud this time. Maybe, like Katalina before, she only had so much telepathic speaking she could do, and who knew how long she had been straining to get ahold of Narcis or Katalina?
She shot Joshua a look as they slipped carefully through the tiny hole in the pile of stuff - her occasional muttered curse words and Nezik's little sounds of pain as Jinx pulled him through proved that it was not quite wide enough. "Isn't it obvious?" she replied. "Tried to get me away safe and got knocked on his silly head for the trouble. He's too sweet for his own damned good."
Nezik gazed up at them with wide, confused eyes - obviously he wasn't quite all together yet. But he was coherent enough to ask, "Sorry and Narcis?"
Jinx, too, turned her look on Joshua. She wanted to know, too.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua sighed, hearing what had happened to Nezik. That was just like the young merman. "Katalina and Narcis were already freed. They should be back at Tianara's clan by now." He answered, switching to speaking aloud because Jinx had. "Narcis is tired, but I think he's okay. I'm worried about Katalina though. She.....She wasn't conscious." He finished in a whisper.
He continued through the plane, not looking at either of the pair. When they were finally out of the plane, he looked around, then pointed. "That's the direction they took Tianara." He said softly, guilt creeping into his voice. He hadn't been able to do anything....He took a deep breath, then looked back at the pair. "Nezik should probably have someone look at him, make sure he's alright." The tiger that should be....isn't....

Nezik had tensed a little when Joshua spoke of Katalina's condition, had gone nearly rigid when he talked about losing Tianara, and by the time the boy actually got to mentioning that someone should check up on him, the young merman was resolutely shaking his head. "No way," he replied, sounding a little clearer and a lot more stubborn. "They took Tianara away? They caught her?"
Jinx, who had looked through Joshua's memories and knew exactly what had happened, said simply, "She let them, didn't she? So they wouldn't catch both of you." The Siren traded glances with Nezik, and then looked back at Joshua.
"No," she said at last. "Nezik'll be fine. You'll never catch up to them alone, especially since you can't sense them, and Nezik would need me to come with him to make sure he didn't get lost." She took a moment to smirk at the merman, who sulked a little. Then she continued, "We'll come with you."

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua nodded. "They felt her almost as soon as they neared where we were hiding." He explained to Nezik. "She had already moved so that they wouldn't find me as well. She wanted me to get you two out."
Nezik wasn't the only one who sulked a little at the Siren's words. Joshua had thought he was getting better at sensing the merfolk around him. He sighed though, knowing Jinx was saying the truth. "Alright then. Let's stop wasting time and get going." He turned in the direction he'd seen them take Tianara and began swimming. Nezik was sounding more clearheaded, so he didn't fight that part. The tiger that should be....isn't....

"They would," said Jinx. "They were her kin, after all." Nezik shot her a pointed glance, and the Siren shrugged. "What? If he didn't know by now, he'd have figured it out," she said tartly. "He's not stupid, for a human."
"The highest of backhanded compliments," muttered Nezik. "Come on, let's go." His tail lashing, he sped up, making Jinx follow, until they were alongside Joshua once more. The boy said quietly, "Joshua, if it's what Narcis was worried about when we were all being held together...what happened when they took Tianara?" It was almost interrogative, as though the merman was trying to figure something out. "Exactly?"
Although Jinx could have told him that, it seemed Nezik thought it would be best to get it right from the source. He didn't want to run into this blind if it turned out to be what Narcis had thought.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... "I thought they were kin to her. One called her 'little sister'." Joshua muttered sadly. At Nezik's comment, he actually gave a tiny smile. "I consider it a very high compliment, coming form her." He muttered in return. The small smile disappeared though when Nezik began his interrogation though.
He was quiet for a minute, then answered. "She moved suddenly, changing spots. She'd been hiding with me, but suddenly moved elsewhere. The group of merfolk that was here split up, two going to check on you two, the other two staying."
He paused, thinking the best way to describe it. "Kistad, I think, was the one who found her. They were talking but I couldn't understand what he was saying. Suddenly he grabbed her and she froze. She just looked so scared. She said something about the 'dark' having him. Did she mean one of the Dark Ones?" The tiger that should be....isn't....
