"You'll have to take her," said the Siren abruptly. "We can't bring her back to her mother like this - not when we also have to bring news of what happened to Kistad. Maybe if we get her out of the water and on land, she'll be able to recognize that she's safe now, and she'll come back. I don't know."
She sighed. "I don't know anything about stuff like this, but she's obviously going to need someone to take care of her if...until she wakes up." Jinx would not admit - at least out loud - that Tianara might not wake up. The girl was strong and stubborn. She would come back, Jinx insisted to herself. She would.
"We'll take the news and the body back to the clan," she said. "You take Tianara back to the cove. We'll find Sorry and Narcis and meet you there." She shifted the girl and held her out to Joshua. The blank dark blue eyes stared up into his, seeing nothing. Jinx shrugged. "It's up to you, I guess."

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua looked startled when Jinx said he would have to take the girl. "Me?" He asked, almost squeaking. He glanced between Tianara and the Siren and made his decision quickly. "Alright. I'll take her." He devoutely hoped Jinx was right about taking her onto land. It was the only idea they had right now.
Reaching out, he took Tianara carefully, craddling her gently. He smoothed her hair briefly before looking up at Jinx. "I'll see you soon then, I guess." He murmured as a farewell, turning to swim away. He kept a careful hold on the girl so that he wouldn't hurt or drop her. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Jinx merely nodded and vanished into the bowels of the ship once again, presumably to retrieve the body of the fallen merman. Nezik remained where he was, waiting until Joshua was out of sight to go down and assist Jinx.
~
Tianara looked exactly like a life-size doll as they made their way back towards shore. She continued to stare blankly out at something only she could see, and only her rhythmic breathing and the soft, even beat of her heart suggested she was alive. Even her body seemed to have cooled down a little, although that might have had more to do with the cold water than with her condition.
The physical bruising was the only sign of any injury. To end up with this kind of result in such a short time, the mental torment inflicted must have been quite horrific.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua swam, not racing any more. He was exhausted from swimming around all night, with no sleep. It took him awhile - the sun was starting to rise - before he arrived back at the cove. He kept glancing at Tianara as he swam, her steady breathing the only thing keeping him from thinking the absolute worst. He didn't want to think of what she'd been through to do this to her.
When he finally arrived at the calm waters of the cove, he pulled the girl up and laid her on the sand. He sat for a moment, then dumped his gear, not even bothering to put it away properly. That was too much effort for him to think of right now. So he simply left it sitting on the sand as he picked up Tianara. He carried her into the cabin, laying her on the bed. He didn't care that the bed was getting wet. As he'd said before, it would dry. Too exhausted to be embarrassed, he crawled in beside her and fell asleep instantly. He could deal with everything later, after he'd had a few hours of sleep. The tiger that should be....isn't....

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... ((M'okays. @EG - Tianara's basically in a coma; Kistad is dead; Narcis, Katalina, Jinx, and Nezik are all free and back at the mercaverns; Joshua and Tianara are back at the cabin. That's the highly glossed over version, but you might want to go back and read.))
Joshua woke as the late morning - or was it early afternoon? - sun shone through the window. He groaned and rolled over. Making a face, he realized he'd slept in his wet clothes. He'd been too tired to change. With a sigh he rose and checked the time. It was just past noon, he realized with a bit of shock. He'd slept for quite some time.
Last nights events suddenly came rushing back to him, causing his eyes to widen. He quickly turned to Tianara, relieved to find her still breathing. He sighed again, this time in relief. She was still as okay as conditions permitted, which admittedly, wasn't very much. He crawled from the bed, finding some fresh clothes and changing. He was still kind of tired, but nowhere near as exhausted as he'd been last night/this morning. Keeping an eye on Tianara and listening for the merfolk, he set about making breakfast for himself and debating how to deal with Tianara. She would need nutrients to survive.
By the time he'd finished breakfast, he figured he would try just water at first. He would see if she would swallow water if it was put in her mouth. He brought a glass of water and a straw and set them on the floor beside the bed. Joshua shifted the girl so she was sitting upright in his arms, craddled. Capping the end of the straw with his finger, he brought it to her mouth and let the tiny bit of liquid seep between her lips. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Tianara moved wherever he put her, again like a doll. There would be no problem with positioning her - if only she would move by herself, even once, it might be an indication that she was going to get better. But there was nothing.
When Joshua let the water seep into her mouth, she did indeed swallow it, but it seemed to be more of a reflex action than anything. That, however, meant that Joshua would at least be able to make sure she didn't get dehydrated.
A soft mental voice - Nezik's - spoke in his mind after a while. "Joshua? Are you awake? Jinx and I tried to speak to you earlier, but you were dead to the world." The boy hesitated, then continued. "We're back in the cove now, but it's just us for a while. Sorry's still at...at Tianara's caverns, and Narcis went to deal with some problems at home..."
That was right. Tianara had mentioned something about problems at the Siren's cove. She'd promised to explain it to Joshua later. Now, it looked like she might never get the chance.
Nezik's voice, still very quiet and sad, started up again. "How's Tianara? Any changes?" He doubted it - if there had been a change, he was sure that Joshua would have been broadcasting it to everyone within earshot. But he had to ask. Just in case.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua was relieved to see the girl swallow, even if it just was a reflexive action. It meant he could care for her heare, without having to resort to hospitals - Or at least, not just yet. He continued to feed her littlle bits of water, not wanting to risk her dehydrating.
He jumped when he heard the voice, spilling some of the water. He relaxed instantly though, recognizing the voice. "Yeah I'm awake. Sorry about that. I was really, really tired." He was glad to hear that the others were still okay, even everything wasn't perfect. "Thanks for letting me know Nezik. As for Tianara....." His unfocused gaze turned to the girl, focusing for a moment. "There's no change I'm afraid." He said with a sigh. "I can get her to take water, though that's more reflexive than conscious. But it means she can stay here. I'll be out in a sec. Need to grab my gear anyways."
He set Tianara back down, smoothing her hair away from her face. "You're safe now. Come back to us." He murmured quietly before slipping outside. He trotted down to the beach, relieved to see his gear where he'd left it in his exhaustion. He glanced around to see if Nezik or Jinx would surface. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Had Joshua hung around for a moment more, he would have seen her right hand twitch slightly after he finished speaking - almost as though acknowledging his words. Maybe somewhere inside, she could hear him, and was looking for a little help getting out.
Nezik surfaced almost as soon as Joshua looked around for them. Coming up as close as he dared to the beach, he tilted his head. "Roky's treating Sorry right now," he said, trying to sound cheerful. It didn't come out the way he wanted it to, but he didn't want to think about the fact that there should have been two people coming out of that cabin this morning. "Acadya kicked him out after a while. She's still working on Addy, but she said she thinks that Addy's going to be mostly okay."
He nodded, mostly to himself. "Anyway, that means Sorry'll be back pretty soon, I hope. And Narcis said he'd come back once he's sorted out the...issues at home." He frowned. "Wouldn't tell me what they were. Do you have any idea?"
Moving right along, he continued, "Jinx is looking for food, I think. She'll be back in a few minutes." He thought the Siren was still hurting from her talk with Tianara's mother the night before. But that part, he didn't mention. Joshua didn't need to hear about it.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua was quiet, letting Nezik roll through his news. He nodded at points, glad to hear most of the news. He breathed a small sigh of relief to hear that Addy would be okay, even if it was just mostly okay.
When Nezik finished, Joshua waited a moment to be sure he was done speaking. "Thank you for the news. It's good to hear something at least kind of good. As for Narcis, I think I might have an idea what's wrong. Not positive I'm right, but I think I am." From what he'd learned from Katalina and from how Riiya had reacted, he was pretty sure he knew what the 'issues' were. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Nezik looked up at him curiously and prodded, "So what do you think it is?" It was sort of a relief, to be talking about anything other than what was foremost on both their minds. He had already run through all the news he could think of that would interest Joshua - or that wouldn't lead them back to talking about Tianara.
He shifted a little bit while he thought, wishing there was something else to talk about. Even though he honestly was curious as to what was going on with the Sirens, it felt like he was just covering for what he really wanted to ask about.
Do you think she'll get better? he thought. It was just one of those things he couldn't ask. Jinx would have asked it. She also would have asked if he felt guilty, since they had been just seconds too late.
But Nezik was a little more empathetic than that.
