Mac looked out of the window, "I think we should check up on Joshua and Tia" he said as she was walking towards the sink.
Mike drank the last of his milk and gasped, "Yeah, I just wonder what happened last night" he interjected.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua vaguely listened to Katalina, more focused on the spark he's seen in the girl's eyes. A smile appeared on his face. "She'll make it." He told Katalina confidently. He wondered if she was right though about Tianara having a guide. "I can try and reach her. I'm not sure if I can though. It's hard to reach her on a good day. It's so much easier to connect to the merfolk. But I'll give it a shot. Anything's worth it if it helps her back."
He cut off the connection to Katalina, not wanting to try and hold both connections at the same time. And right now, the connection to Tianara was more important. He reached out, trying to find Tianara's mind. It was hard, even harder than usual, but he thought he had a tenative connection. He was catching tiny glimpses of the jumble Katalina had found. He worked at it, trying to find Tianara in the mess and reach her. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Katalina allowed the connection to be cut off. Smiling sadly to herself, she thought, Good luck. And then she turned to her brother and shrugged. "I think we might as well just go to the caverns and find something else to work on. He's going to be busy for a while."
~
The barriers that had been there for Katalina had lightened a little by the time Joshua tried reaching through. Perhaps she had recognized someone that her mind classified as 'safe' and thought that the next one to come through would likely be safe also. Maybe it was just a matter of who it was. Either way, it made Joshua's attempt to get through to her easier than Katalina's had been.
The jumble was slowly beginning to sort itself out, memories and confusion and fear all being shifted to their proper places. The process stopped briefly when Joshua finally forged the tentative connection, then slowly began to pick up again. The mess was being cleaned up again - obviously, Tianara intended to make her way back. But she was taking her time about it.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... "Alright." Aria agreed easily. "Just let me finish these dishes." She filled the sink with water, humming cheerfully as she washed the dishes. She set a towel out on the counter, placing the dishes on it to dry. When she was finished, she dried her hands, then smiled brightly at the boys. "Well, let's get going." She said, moving to the front door. She slipped on her sandals and headed outside, waiting for the two boys to follow her.
As Joshua watched, he could see what Katalina meant about Tianara having to clean up before she could come back. He watched as the jumbled up mess sorted itself out, slowly. After a moment of watching, he continued searching. Tianara had to be in this mess somewhere. He tried reaching even farther in, hesitantly though. He was afraid to dig too dig and trigger a resurrection of the barriers. But as long as he could, he kept pushing in. He wanted to find her, to help her. He didn't want to have to see her blank stare for any longer than he had to. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Mac and Mike waited for Aria to finish. When she gestured for them to come, the followed without a word.
Mac was not a morning person, and didn't have anything to say on the way there.
Mike just kept next to Mac the whole time.
Time seemed to fly when you're half awake.

When Joshua reached farther in, there was a sense almost like a cringe, and for a moment the barriers began to strengthen again. Then they weakened once more as she recognized the newcomer for who he was. The mess slowly continued to fix itself, but the barriers remained strong against any other outsiders.
Tianara herself - the real her, the soul hidden under the mess - was curled up safely in the dark shadow cast by the thoughts and memories and confusion. She wasn't quite awake or asleep; she was just in the lovely between while she sorted out the mess.
Although she thought she felt someone else here, it was at a distance, from far away. It had nothing to do with her. She was still wounded - the frail, silvery version of her that Joshua might find if he searched deep enough still bled. But she was healing, and she was cleaning up. When she was ready, she would come out again and take down the walls.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua pushed farther still, but it was making his head ache, trying this hard. He wasn't used to the mental strain. "Tianara?" He tried calling, then gave up. He had no idea how close he was to finding the silvery version of the girl. "Come back when you're ready. We miss you." He murmured then retreated, nursing a headache.
He'd seen enough to know Tianara was working on it. She would come back eventually. It was enough to give him hope, something to hold onto. With a sigh, he let her lie down again. He propped his head on his hand and closed his eyes. He waited a moment then reached to Katalina. "I can't find her. She's working on coming back, but it looks like a slow porcess." He sounded tired from just that little excercise. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Tianara was rudely awakened by the sound of someone calling for her.
"...Come back when you're ready. We miss you."
Her rattled, dazed mind took a moment to recognize the voice, but when she did, she smiled - a smile that would be reflected, very slightly, on her body's face. Joshua.
Working on it, she thought. I'll get there. Just be patient.
In the meantime, the barriers went up again, as solid as ever. She had let him through, had felt someone else slip through, and until she had cleaned up, that couldn't be allowed again.
~
Katalina nodded. "Take a break, Joshua," her voice murmured kindly. "You sound tired. She'll find her way back - you know she will, and so do I. She'll get there; she's nothing if not stubborn. Maybe try again when you're rested and she's cleaned up a little more. For now, though, you should probably shut down on the telepathy - last thing we need is both of you out for the count. Come out if you want to talk. We'll be here."
Her voice was comforting, and her words equally so. It was true; the merfolk, at least these four, would be there. (Three, technically, but Narcis would be coming back at some point.)

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... There was a sense of acknowledgement, though he didn't actually say anything. Joshua opened his eyes, smiling slightly at Katalina's words. His eyes automatically went to Tianara and he was surprised to see the tiniest of smiles on her face. His own smile softened. Well, apparently it hadn't been a completely wasted effort. Something had gotten through to the girl. She would make her way back. There was no doubt of that in his mind.
For now though, he just let his eyes close again. It helped to lessen the pounding in his head. After a moment, he rose and went outside, sitting on the beach. He hoped the sun would help ease some of the headache. And having someone to talk to wouldn't hurt, he thought, glancing over the cove waters. He was distracted though, by a voice hailing him. He winced at it's volume, then waved back at Aria and the group. He smiled wanly at them. "Hey guys." He murmured quietly.
Aria led the boys through a short cut only she knew, across the cliffs. The cliffs were trecherous at parts but she knew them like the back of her hand. It wasn't long before they were walking up the beach and could see him sitting at the tide's edge. She called out a greeting to him, frowning slightly as he winced. "You alright?" She asked him, sitting next to him. He nodded and murmured something about just being tired. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Mac and Mike followed Aria through whatever she drug them through, what other choice have they had?
Mac waved at Joshua when he was in sight. He ran forward a little, and shouted towards him, "Good morning! How are you?" he asked. He still could now fully open his eyes and see the world.
Mike was still just minding his own business, until he heard Mac talk, and he quickly spoke to Joshua, "What's goin on dude?" he said like he was being slightly silly.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua winced again as the two spoke up. "Keep your voice down please. My head hurts enough as it is." Seeing the cheerful boys, he realized they knew nothing of what had happened last night. Was it only last night, he wondered. It felt like a lifetime. But they had to be informed. Keeping his voice low, Joshua briefly explained everything. How the four had disappeared, the strange attack of the Dark One, searching and rescuing the four merfolk, and.....and Tianara's decent into her mind. His eyes were dark as he explained the last part. If only they'd been a few minutes earlier!
Aria, sitting beside Joshua, put an arm over his shoulders. She could see how much he was beating himself up over the incident. Wordlessly she comforted him. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Mac listened to his whole story, wondering a moment, how he could help the easiest problem. His eyes lit up as he came up with an idea. "Mike, I need you to help me" he said, "I want to help Tianara" he explained.
Mike listened to Mac and for a second he sighed, "Does this mean we have to...I mean, can't she just wake up on her own? Fine, I guess we could do it" Mike said as if he knew that if he argued with Mac he'd lose. Mike wasn't prone to liking Mac's directness about helping others so selflessly.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... "No!" Joshua said suddenly, his eyes flashing. "No, don't do anything to her." His voice was so determined that it startled Aria into drawing back from him. He didn't even notice, more concerned about Tianara. "Leave Tianara alone. She's got it under control. I looked and I could see that she'll wake up, when she decides it's time. We can't rush her. Besides," He seemed to calm down slightly. "She's put her barriers back up. I don't know if I, or even Katalina, could get back in right now. It's safer to just let Tianara do her own work." He didn't want to risk anyone forcing the girl out of her shell prematurely. The damage that could be done was enormous. They could wake her up, only to send her back again worse than before. The tiger that should be....isn't....
