The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua snapped back to the present and nodded. "I'll be sure to grab a couple maps, maybe laminate them too. That'll make things easier." Then he wouldn't have to worry about the maps being damaged by water.
He glanced at Kiro in surprise of his words. He smiled gratefully. "Thanks." He murmured, glad Kiro still seemed to trust him, even after all the issues Tianara had had while with him. It made him determined to do his best to protect the girl. Though he'd learned that perhaps it was best to let her take the lead sometimes....
He shook his head to clear it of all the stray thoughts. "I'm going to need to make a list of everything we need, just to remember it all." That thought sparked another one in a chain reaction process. He glanced at the girl. "Tianara? Can you read or write?" He knew Katalina hadn't been able to, but she was mermaid. He didn't know if the ocean children would be taught before they were released. If not, he would have to find time somewhere to teach her. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Katalina frowned at the word, confused. "Lam...i...nate? You know what, never mind. I'll see it later," she said lightly. "You're right. Getting everything you need is the important thing right now."
Kiro noticed Joshua's glance his way and smiled a bit, shrugging one shoulder in a sort of what-can-you-do gesture. Tianara trusted Joshua, he knew that much, and Joshua had brought his sister back to them. That in itself made the boy perfectly capable of looking after Tia in Kiro's eyes. There was more to it, of course, but Kiro didn't think he ought to mention it. At least not yet.
Tianara looked up in surprise when she was addressed. At Joshua's question, she wrinkled her brow and then chuckled softly. "We've been through this," she reminded him. "I can read, but my training got interrupted before I could learn to write."
Kiro looked mildly distressed. "That's right," he muttered, "it was. I'd forgotten all about it. You should have reminded me, Tianara - I'd have found time to teach you."
Tianara dismissed it with a wave. "It's okay. It can't be too hard if I already know how to read, right?" She looked at Joshua hopefully. "Right?"
~
Citara stared at him. "Of course English is my second language," she responded sharply. "You must have really had your head twisted by your time on land, if you're already so arrogant as to think that just because you speak English everyone else must too."
At his question, the beginning of an exasperated sigh came up - but it never came out. She'd abruptly realized he was teasing her. A little smile came to her lips. "No, you aren't. Our children never do. You can't get around me that easily."
Turning in the water, she looked after the boat. Then she glanced back at him, one fine brow raised. "Looks like you're stranded. So now what?" If he were a normal ocean child, she wouldn't have had a qualm about inviting him to the cavern where she currently lived. But he wasn't. And she didn't know if she could trust him. He'd ruined her waters, after all.
And yet, she couldn't find it in herself to just leave him.
A puzzle.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua chuckled at Katalina's confusion over the word. He waved it off. It wasn't really important anyways. He blinked at Tianara's words. "We have? Sorry. Guess my brain's a little scrambled trying to think of everything at once." He chuckled at his own forgetfulness. "But that's fine. Reading is the more important part anyways. I can always teach you to write later. That's the easy part, if you can already read." He told the girl reassuringly. "You're smart. You'll pick it up easily." He seemed confident in her abilities to learn quickly and well. The tiger that should be....isn't....

"It was a while ago," said Tianara lightly. "I'm not surprised." She was a little less certain about her ability to learn to write quickly, but because she could tell that Joshua believed in her, she knew she'd find it pretty easy to believe in herself.
"Well, if that's all settled," said Kiro, "I need to go back. The matriarch needs to hear about this, if only to rein in the more impetuous young ones." He kissed his sister's forehead, nodded to Katalina and Joshua, and slipped out of the coral.
Tianara remained quiet until he left and then sighed, shaking her head. "Now he's going to be annoyed with himself because he forgot about teaching me to write," she said, sounding dryly amused. "Joshua, are we going up to town right away? I mean, you're going to need your stuff as soon as possible, right?"
She sounded nervous, and indeed she was. Going to town, at least the past few times, had been no picnic, and she wasn't sure she was ready to face the stares and whispers of the town again. But if Joshua wanted her to, she'd try, she thought. She had to learn to deal with them eventually.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua returned Kiro's nod as the man left. 'I just hope I live up to his expectations.....' He thought to himself. He would hate to disappoint Kiro and especially Tianara's mother. He barely stopped himself from wincing at the thought of her. Oh he could only imagine the trouble he was in with the mermaid for all he'd let happen to her daughter.
He was drawn out of his thoughts by Tianara's voice. "I'd like to replace it as soon as possible, yes." He said, nodding firmly. "The tank you gave me is holding up - So far. I'm not really in any mood to test it too much. It is old, not matter how well taken care of it is." He told her gently. "I just don't want to risk it giving out when I really need it."
He could hear the nervousness in her voice and patter her shoulder reassuringly. "You'll do fine. I know you will. You just have to get used to it." He could guess why she was so nervous. "Don't worry so much about what others humans think. I still get stares and whispers occasionally." He admitted to the girl. "You just have to learn to ignore them." Katalina's lips twitched as she looked at Joshua. "Well, in that case, I'll be off, too," she said. "I'm taking Nezik and Jinx back to the clan, at least for a while - I think we'll all be safest to stick together until...until," she trailed off, "well, something more...definite happens. Let me know when you have those maps, and I'll come by for a look."
She drew back into the coral, leaving Joshua and Tianara by themselves.
Tianara broke the silence after a moment. Nodding uncomfortably, she said, "Okay. I guess that's a good reason," she added, trying for teasing and failing rather painfully. "And then I can send it back home and not worry that something will happen to it."
She sighed. "I wish I wasn't so nervous. It's silly to be nervous, isn't it? I mean, they're just people. They're just like us. But..." She smiled apologetically, shrugged. "You know."
Honestly, she actually had no idea if he did know or not, but that wasn't the point. Even if he didn't, he'd understand what she meant.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua waved to Katalina as she left, then turned to Tianara. He smiled softly at her nervousness. "Just take a deep breath and relax." He told her, his amber eyes gentle. "Everything will be fine. I know what you mean, but there's no reason to worry." He completely understood the feeling of being nervous around people. It had taken him a long time to get to the point where he was at least semi-comfortable with the townsfolk.
"Now, no sense it putting it off. The faster we start, the faster it's done with." He said with a lighthearted laugh, trying to help her relax. "Come on. Let's head back." He turned and swam away from the coral, back out into the cove waters. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Tianara hesitated a brief moment longer, then nodded her tentative assent. Joshua was right. She needed to learn. And where better than the town by her family caverns, with a trusted friend as a guide?
And besides, humans were probably like other animals. They could sense fear. And where you sensed fear, you would think there was something to be afraid of - and close in.
She took a long, shuddering breath, and then struck out in the water after Joshua. She would be fine, she told herself repeatedly. She would be fine.
And that mantra in mind, she followed and eventually overtook her friend. Just as they reached the shore, a thought occurred that she probably should have asked earlier.
"Joshua...if someone asks me about it, about where I'm from I mean....what do I tell them?" she asked, uncertain. Obviously she couldn't tell the truth, but nor could she say she was from around this area. She was unfamiliar with it, and unfamiliar in town - no one would believe her.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua surfaces and pushed his mask off, taking a deep breath of fresh air. It always felt so much better after using the scuba tanks, no matter how brief the trip. He glanced at Tianara in surprise at her question. "You know, I never thought of that." He told her thoughtfully. He hummed for a moment, then made up his mind. "Tell them you're from Queenscove. It's a ways away, so you wouldn't be expected to be familiar with this area. But it's still a sea town, so that could explain your knowledge of water."
He paused, then flashed her a grin as he said his final point. "Besides, Queenscove is where I grew up. So if anyone questions you about the place, I can help you there. After all, I lived there for seventeen years. I know the place pretty well. I haven't been back in ages, but it can't have changed that much."

((OOC: Do you want to play the other guy, or should I?))
Tianara hauled herself out of the water, looking fairly soaked but otherwise none the worse for wear. "All right," she said, brushing back the long, silky wet strands of hair. At his next words, however, she smiled very slowly. "That sounds good."
Getting to her feet and brushing away some of the wet sand, she offered him her hand cheerfully and said lightly, "But you'll have to tell me what the place is like as we go there. I shouldn't have to look at you for every answer, right? That would make people wonder."
Her wide dark blue eyes seemed to shine a little bit as she spoke. "Is it beautiful?" she asked quietly. "Like it is at home, around here?" She gestured around the cove they were sitting on at the moment. Her gaze took it all in for a second, and then at last she smiled over at the forest.
"Well," she murmured after a moment. "I suppose we should get going. We have a lot to do."

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... ((I'll take him I guess. I'm just debating over making a profile for him or not.))
"Sounds fair to me." Joshua said, taking her hand and pulling himself to his feet then dropping her hand. He brushed himself off and glanced at the cabin, then the sun, and decided against it. They would dry off fast enough in the sun. No point in getting dry clothes and wasting time if they didn't have to.
He set off across the beach, towards the path through the forest. "Queenscove is nice. I really like the place. It's got a naturally deep harbor there, so the ships can come practically right up to shore. The land around it is more open than here though. Actually, the place is known for the fields of daffodils that just pop up every year. Anywhere that's not planted with something else is liable to sprout daffodils." He told her with a chuckle.
"The town itself is roughly the same size as this town here. Most of the harbor towns around here are generally this size." He continued to talk as they walked. "So that's a basic overview. Anything in particular you want to know?" The tiger that should be....isn't....

Tianara kept pace with him, smiling as she listened to his words. "No," she said at last. "I think that is everything that I need." She thought for a few minutes and at last nodded. "Yes, that's at least the basics. What should my family be like?" she wondered aloud.
She didn't really know what a human family was like. It had been so long since she had even asked Kiro about his - it always made him sad when she asked, so she tried not to. But it had left her with uncertain ideas about her family.
So as they wound their way along the forest trails, Tianara got lost in thought. She knew there was a mother and a father. There were probably other children. Were they similar to a merfolk family, with a leader and so forth?
She could ask Joshua, but she thought it might be rather a stupid question. So she decided she'd puzzle it out on her own. It couldn't be that hard. She'd learn by observation.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua went quiet at her question. Most of the knowledge he was giving Tianara was from his own experience. Family was one thing he didn't want her to use him as an example for. After a moment, he answered. "I'm not sure. Every family is different." He tried to talk without using his own family as an example. "Generally a mother and father. Number of children varies from none to a bunch. Different personalities and ideas determine how well the family gets along." A hint of bitterness crept into his voice. Shaking his head, he forced it back. "You could probably use your own family as an alibi, just say that they all live in Queenscove." The tiger that should be....isn't....

Tianara nodded to his answer, and was about to ask another question when she realized she could hear the sounds of the town - cars, people babbling, dogs barking. Her nerves immediately took over once more, and she edged up until she was closer to Joshua.
"Okay," she murmured softly, though it was unclear whether she was talking to him or to herself. "Okay."
Pushing back her long dark hair once more, she took a deep breath. "I can do this," she said quietly. But she stayed close to Joshua as they entered the town.
She scanned the town slowly as they went in. Really, she didn't know what she was looking for while she did it - maybe a threat. Maybe she just wanted to feel like she was in control of something.
But it occurred to her once more - and shockingly painfully - that people just like the ones around them now were the enemy if this war should ever fully come to be.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Joshua glanced at Tianara as she moved closer. He smiled reassuringly at her, moving away from the touchy subject of family. "You'll be fine. Nothing to fear." He told her easily in a vote of confidence. "I know you can do it." He seemed unworried about her ability to deal with the situation.
Confidently, he lead her through town towards the center shopping district. Weaving through the crowds easily, he entered a shop the carried the title 'Places to Go'. Insides, the walls and shelves were covered with maps and books on travel. A man behind the counter greeted him cheerfully as the pair entered. "Yo Josh! Great to see ya again." He spoke with a bit of an accent, one that was mostly faded so it was hard to place.
Joshua smiled tolerantly at the man. "Hello Adrian. I see you're still chipper as ever." The man, Adrian, chuckled and didn't seem put out by the comment. "Why look on the bad side of life? Oh hey. Who the sweet looking one beside you?" He asked, his attention shifting to the girl. He came out from behind the counter to smile winningly at Tianara. " 'Ello beautiful. Might one unworthy as myself be graced with your name?" He asked teasingly.
Joshua, though he didn't show it, was getting irritated. Oh he knew Adrian alright. If he hadn't been with every girl in town over the age of sixteen, it wasn't for lack of trying. Somehow he wasn't surprised Tianara had caught his attention. She had a quiet beauty about her. The tiger that should be....isn't....
