After that little bout of pain things settled down again. T'sar knew the end of their shift at this height was coming to a close and he was thankful for it. Though danger lurked at every altitude, it was always the worst up here. Not much longer and they'd be cycling down to the lowest wing.

Yet again, the wind sent strand after clump after strand tumbling into them. Adarith was getting frustrated that he couldn't Flame the individual strands and T'sar's arm was aching from a particularly bad strike. Much more of this and it would be back to the healers for them.

More Thread, more pain, but this time it hit Adarith's face. He let out a bellow of pain as he shook his head fiercely, trying to shake the Thread off before jumping Between once again. T'sar could tell they weren't just in the cold, quiet space to get rid of the Thread, they were going back to the Weyr. His heart clenched with fear for Adarith's eyes, unsure of the state of his dragon.

Altitude Change! Hour 3, Round 1 Beings!

High Altitude Wing: Star Flame
Mid Altitude Wing: Fire Storm
Low Altitude Wing: Flame's Fury

Hour: 1200

Wave Change: First Wave must return to the Weyr! Second Wave is up!

Location: Directly over Western Hold, and the plains over the Western Continent. Any Thread that slips through will bring with it devastation on the crowded Major Hold below. While most should be indoors, the Hold is large enough that there might be those who were locked out, or unaware that it was a Threadfall day and are now well without shelter. Additionally, there are docks and ships in the ports on the eastern side of the Hold, and there are minor Holds, cotholds, and life of all stripes on the plains.

Conditions: The wind isn't getting any better, but the predicted low is moving slower than expected. While it means any storms that develop will happen later in the afternoon, it also means there will be no rain to drown Thread. Winds from the unstable air of two colliding weather fronts will make for continued rough conditions.

- - - -

The winds were not dying, and any hope for rain was dashed the longer they fought. While clouds were forming well north-west of them, they were flying south-west, and would likely miss any rain that the colliding fronts would likely bring.

Perhaps that was for the best.

A heavy rain might drown Thread, but there was no guarantee conditions would remain wet enough to kill it; a mist or sprinkle wouldn't be enough, and any downpour could just as quickly end, leaving the people below without aid. It wasn't ideal, no matter how many riders might wish such a thing.

R'mor wasn't sure whether they were doing better or worse. A white had gone down, and there were many inured. Even the Queen's Wing was taking it hard, with multiple reports of injuries even so far below. P'kav was gone... and there were still two hours left.

Faranth help them all, he could only hope no one else would succumb this day.

First Wave! You have fought well this day. Return to the Weyr, get patched up, and rest up until the rest of your wingmates return! Second Wave, your time to fight is now! Join us in this great battle but be wary of the winds upon your approach! Thread is blown about everywhere. For those who will remain in the fight, keep up the hard work! You are halfway through this fight, but the winds are not our friend this day. Let your Wingleader and Second know if you need assistance or to return to the Weyr to heal! You are not in this fight alone!

And with that, R'mor gave the signal for wings to change their altitudes, and the Waves to swap.

They returned as they had gone, in a flurry of wings and a loud roar, this one of defiance to the Thread that had caused Adarith harm. He flamed and flew beautifully, using the wind to his advantage as he dodged what he couldn't burn. T'sar moved with his dragon, years of practice making him less awkward in the air. He could still remember the first time they had flown Threadfall together and how it had almost ended in disaster thanks to his inexperience in a situation like this, but now they were a team. Adarith was the brawn and T'sar was the brain, ensuring his rowdy brown didn't get too lost in the battle.

They continued to weave and doge, flame and burn. Adarith wasn't the most agile or graceful dragon out there, but he was managing all right. Perhaps it was the renewed sense of vengeance against the Thread for scarring his face, but T'sar wasn't going to question it.

So focused were they on the Thread that when a wingmate appeared from Between beside them, they barely had time to react. Pain flared along both dragon and human as flame licked over Adarith's side and T'sar's leg. Their armor was meant for Thread, not fire! Adarith wheeled away and out of the blast, cursing the fool of a rider who had injured them.

Reeling from the pain, Adarith tried to fight through it. His focus was diminished, though, and it was only when T'sar spotted the Thread flying on an updraft that he warned his brown companion. Just a bit too late, it seemed, as the Thread caught the long brown tail before Between eased the ache.

It was their turn to go, finally Broleith burst onto the scene, taking the place of a blue who had gone the first round, and instantly spotted a disaster in the making. Thespeth was very focused off to his left, fighting Thread as hard as he could, but there was a sneaky sheet of Thread that had managed to trickle down from the higher altitude. Another wingmate saw it and Broleith could see what she was trying to do... and could see how it would fail.

Oi! Thespeth! Get out of there! he cried to the brown, Trissa closing her eyes for just a moment. She didn't want to see what might happen if the warning was too late.

This is bad. Very bad. One of your wingmates appears out of Between flaming, but instead of catching a nearby target, they catch you instead. Your dragon roars in pain, blinking hastily Between! Just how bad is the damage? Roll a D4!
Auto Max damage - negated by Broleith

Thespeth was having a hard time of it and was thoroughly put out. Distracted and annoyed, he missed the danger coming at him until Broleith called out. Thanks! He called to her, even as he was more annoyed with himself.

After saving their wingmate, Broleith began dip and dive and dodge, flaming here and there as he flew around like a maniac. Trissa was keeping him in check, too, not wanting him to expend all his energy in the first few minutes, but Broleith had so much pent up excitement that letting a little steam off now was probably a good thing. It would help him focus later when he was tired.

Yet again, another wingmate was in trouble. Broleith spotted the hulking bronze return from a trip Between only to be faced with a sheet of Thread, and in the split second before Garganth and M’lus jumped back into the cold but safe space, the stout blue called out to them.

Take your chances with that lot, Garganth! You've got some nasty Thread all around you! Indeed, the bronze was surrounded and Betweening anywhere right now would be dangerous. Trissa urged Broleith forward to help flame away some of the Thread to allow the large dragon to escape, unsure if he could blaze that whole sheet away on his own.

The wind is rough, but you and your dragon are managing. You get a breather as your dragon flies into a small break of Threadfall. The upper altitudes must be doing a good job sweeping up!

Thespeth growled as the Thread eased up. He knew it would come back. T'tain wondered what had gotten into his dragon this fall.
