"That's easy, you learned your magic from a book, mine is innate and supplied by belief, no learning required." Van said, starting walk back out of the cavern to set up camp.
"Okay, but what about me and Larai?" Kai asked as he followed alongside his dad.
Van rubbed his chin for a moment. "I think...it's because yours are technically the powers of a god, but since you are half mortal, you're unaffected by the belief system like full gods. And, since it's pretty hard to screw with a god's power, you two are still in the clear. At least for now, at any rate."

"You are half wrong. Remember, magic is hereditary. Many humans who cannot use magic never had it in them to begin with. My mother, for all her numerous flaws and shortcomings, was a witch - which makes me one too. I simply did not know how to use it properly until I was taught - starting with a little protective magic at the temple and then everything else from the academy." Mala stated calmly, a more serious look on her face now.

"Well...maybe whatever's going on can't account for half breeds, no offense. Your dad was mortal after all, right?" Van asked, aware that her father unit was a long forgotten mystery.

"Witches are not a different breed, Van. They are just humans or elves who dabble in magic." Mala replied, refusing to back down on this. "Besides - halfbreeds tend to have a weaker magical basis, so wouldn't they be the first to lose their powers?"

"Take it easy dad, let's just get out of here, get some rest, and we can figure this out then. You've been through enough as it is." Kai said with a worried expression when he saw his dad start to wrack his brain again.

"Alright. We'll discuss this more later." Mala replied with a small nod, going on to help set up camp while letting Van hold Anise. She looked distant, clearly trying to calculate the reason behind this chain of events.

As he held Anise, Van would occasionally look up and around, wondering where Larai had gone. "I can't believe I snapped at her like that..." he muttered to himself.

"It's getting late, I thought she'd be back by now..." Van said worriedly as he looked up to see the slowly setting sun. "I didn't realize I was that bad...."

"Larai has always been like this. Remember when she was ten? After any sort of arguement with anyone she'd run off and hide until someone calmed her or until she forgot about it - most often she'd climb up into a tree or snuggle under a blanks beneath her bed." Mala assured Van, hoping to ease his worries at least a little.

"I'll go find her." Kai said getting up to search for his sister. "Hey Larai! Dad's getting worried, time to come on back!"

Larai did not reply, for she was already off quite a distance away from camp. She had actually managed to find a small yet sturdy dead tree, and was resting peacefully on one of the bulky branches.

Kai climbed up the occasional tree, trying to see if he could spot her from afar, walking a ways, and repeating the process quite a few times before he finally found her. "Dad could actually die and we don't have the first clue what's going on, you could stand to cut him at least a little slack." he said walking up to the tree with his hands in his pockets.

Larai still didn't say a thing. She seemed quite relaxed with her eyes closed and her soft breathing. Chances were, she was either asleep or in some magical coma of some sort. For the plot's sake, let's just say she's asleep.
