The next morning, Van yawned drearily as he awoke to Anise crying for attention. Getting up to gently bounce her in his arms and calm her down, somehow amused that he was actually starting to smile again as he lingered a short ways away from the group so as not to wake anyone else up.

Anise giggled in delight, happy to have attention once more. She grabbed at some of Van's hair as well, since she saw it shining so nicely in the early sunlight...

"I think you're a little young to be getting jealous of daddy's hair." Van joked, lifting a piece of his hair and dangling it over Anise's head.

((And when you're done with Baccano, there's its spiritual successor Durarara. xD))

Anise giggled again, uncaring about the comment as she continued to reach for his hair - not yet realising that he would pull it away just before she could grasp it.

Rather than pull his hair out of her grasp, Van would instead occassionally stick it in Anise's face as if tickling her nose with a paintbrush.

Anise giggled all the more, continuing to grab at Van's hair.

"Sorry daddy hasn't been terribly cheerful lately." Van said softly to Anise as he sat down against a tree while he continued to play with his little bundle of joy. "While I've been worrying about staying alive for you and Mala's sakes, you haven't had a clue what's going on. I guess I'd rather be changing your diapers than seeing you worrying just like your mother." he said with a bit of a chuckle.

Anise looking up at Van and cocked her head slightly, unable to comprehend what her father was saying. But with the short attention span babies have, she began grabbing at Van's hair once again.

"While babies may make good listeners, it'd be nice if you knew what I was saying. But you're still adorable, so I guess you're off the hook." Van said with a smile, tickling her with his hair some more.

Anise giggled in delight, blissfully unaware of the situation that they had all been forced into.

"Now I just feel like I'm talking to myself. Let's see if anyone's gotten up and made breakfast." Van said, getting up and wandering back to camp.
