Practice, practice, practice. That is the best advice anyone can give you, because that is really the only thing that will make you better as a guitar player. Also, don't settle for a crappy guitar, do your research, then be ready to pay about $200 for it, at least. And you won't be good at it right off the bat, so don't get discouraged about how well you're progressing.
I'd say start with learning about the chords, then after you know your major and minor chords, move onto some scales. Also, some DVD's are pretty good for learnin them. Of course, my opinion is just what I'm doing right now, since I'm still learning how to play myself.

Im pretty good at saving what i get ^_^ so i should be ok I'm teaching myself, although every once in a while my friends teach me stuff they know. Also, a Gibson will normally run you around a $1000 US. They're expensive, and for the most part geared towards more hard rock as far as I can tell, beautiful looking and sounding guitars though.

Iconised Ghost ah ok, i dont think i really need to spend that much on a first guitar sweatdrop No, that's a major investment there, and we aren't even talking with an amp. xD Epiphone is a spinoff brand of Gibson that makes their guitars, lesser quality of course, and sells them for cheper, but those still can be around $500. Squier is the same with Fender, but much much crappier. xD Do your research though, you can go to Guitar Center's website and read reviews of guitars there. Or talk to the people who sell them, they tend to know quite a bit about them. Definately stay away from guitars less than $150, and even then, I'd be wary up until you get to $200-$250 at least. Pretty much, you get what you pay for though, and now I'm rambling.

i understand your point, but since i dont know whether this is a whim or a life long love im a bit unwilling to spend a grand on just the guitar. Im thinking around $300, i want it to be cheap enough not to be a waste if i go off playing it, but a good enough guitar that it doesnt sound terrible and discourage me

Ah, see, I (used to) play Viola. I WANT to play guitar, but I can't seem to find the time. (Sis: "Why not now? you've been on the computer for, like, an hour" Me: "....................Shut up.")
Oh, well.
As for everything else, I play by ear. Including singing. Which I'm not too bad at, actually, as long as I can hear myself.
I can't read music. At all. I used to be able to read Viola music, but I can't anymore. I stopped playing, for some reason. Dunno why. I wasn't very good, anyways.
