@waku: That reminds me of when people say they need to itch something. You scratch an itch, you don't itch an itch.

Yes, I notice the itch/scratch thing quite often....

On a slightly different tack, I love the fact that "nauseous" means both feeling nausea and inducing nausea... biggrin

I usually have an odd problem that does and yet doesn't go in hand with what you've all mentioned.

I read quite a lot and so many of the words I know I learned from reading. But I did not look them all up as I came to them. So many of the words I use, I learned their meaning through context. So I know what words mean but don't always know the actual definition.

That being said that is the problem in some cases of misused words. People hear/read them and don't use them correctly because they picked them up in context of something else.
Little kids do that, they heard words they think sound grown up and cool and use them to refer to all kinds of things.

And completely unrelated, I spent a long while mispronouncing wry. And I like that word: dry mocking humor or a disgusted, annoyed facial expression

"Yous guys."
It is the STAPLE of my area.
"Yous guys goin to the movies?"
"What're yous guys doin?"

-_________-"
It's "You guys", not "Yous guys".

Hardly.
Welcome to southern Ontario. Half of the people here are hicks and rednecks, and the rest have the place confused with the city -__-"

Elcia I love that you mentioned that. This is something that is cute right now but if it keeps going...

Lydia says Bath time tonight and by that she means bath time now, we're trying to correct that but she's having troubles with that. She also things "the whole world" means that she really likes something. Again, trying to fix it, but it's totally cute right now.

Yunie, in an area in Bruce County, where I lived, everyone pronounced milk as "malk", corn was "kern", ******** some people even called radios RADios. Oh ******** people there pissed me off!

I'm originally from Wyoming. I feel like I don't need to say more...

ooo do they say "You need to warsh your feet in the crick after you bin on the ruff" there? My personal favourite: Warshrum.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 06, 2009 10:14 am
well... they do at least pronounce roof correctly...
And while been is used improperly, been and bin are mostly (MOSTLY) the same, bin just looks like a hick said it. smile

But overall, yes. Indeed. That sounds very familiar.

"been" is pronounced the same as "bean" and not at all like "bin".

Oh, I have this love/hate thing with the words "nothing," "button," and other such words. I like them well enough, but sometimes people say "nuh-ihn" or "buh-ihn" with a little pause to indicate where the t's go. It just makes me crazy. scream
