Again, with the waiting. Again, frustration began to mount.
He knew why he was in the Queen's wing, yet it was nothing more that fuel for a fire to beat the enemy of his own limitations. His dragons, his wing was up there fighting, while he himself was down here, biting at the bit to return to them...

Yet something pulled at him, feeling the loss as soon as it happened. One of his riders, one of his dragons. Dharmath, and P'kav. Even from down in the Queen's wing, Menyherth threw his head and keened for the loss of one more life, one more set of vibrant eyes to go out from the fight against thread.

35-40. You want to do more. You want to be more. You're frustrated by the lack of action down in the lower wings, though you do now it's a very important role. You fidget in your riding straps. [2/3]

Eirinth added her voice to the throng of wails as a dragonrider fell. So soon? Unfair couldn’t begin to describe the circumstance, and she could practically feel the pain coming off of Menyherth. Her touch was brief but strong, a poor consolation that the white had to be with them rather than with his wing. But there could be nothing done now. Rhea reigned it in, her own face an emotionless mask.

< You did wonderfully, > Eirinth said to Khamaith, trying to turn away from the pain by focusing on the youngest queen’s catch. But she worried. Khamaith had taken damage, as well as the wee brother white Baihath

Rhea calmly, firmly pushed her dragon back to task. It was not up to them whether the younglings (for Eirinth rarely considered anyone adult) continued or left to heal.

Quote:
45-50. You keep looking up, but nothing seems to be heading your way. Your neck is starting to object, but it doesn't matter. You must be ever vigilant, or so the saying goes. The Queen's Wing is an important position, but it sure can be boring... Part of you wishes you could be higher up, where all the action is. Part of you is grateful you're safer down here.

Elysia kept her eyes above them, though she could feel herself growing restless. Things were relatively quiet, though some of her fellow wingmates had already taken injuries. Baihath, Khamaith, some of the Weyr's youngest... But Sheyoth and she hadn't yet had a chance to jump into the fray. Part of her was glad, for every quiet moment was less risk for her or Sheyoth; but another part of her felt she needed to be leading an example, and to lead, she needed to fight. A strange cycle, indeed.

A flash of silver caught her eye, and Sheyoth immediately responded. The pale queen dove, certain that should get her rider in close enough to take care of the small patch that had slipped through the ranks. Elyisa aimed with her flamethrower, and though it belched forth fire, she realized that she had missed her mark! Too late, the winds pushed the remaining clump into the two of them, and Elysia panicked as the tangle of Threads began to eat away at her clothing and gear.

Sheyoth hissed in pain, but in a flash, the queen had popped Between. The gold resumed her formation, the Thread's unable to withstand the cold. "Shaffit," the girl murmured, running a hand over her arm and wrist. Though there were new holes in her gear, and blood, the wound was slight. "You good, Sheyoth?" She asked, glancing down to see a few wells of green ichor.

Thankfully, the wound didn't look deep. It is nothing to me. The queen stated, sending Her's a wave of gentle assurance.

Staying on target had been Rhea’s whole life, for better or for worse. She was quick on the draw when Thread slithered through the ranks and turned a short burst of flame on the menace before it could slink through.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire...

No sooner had the young woman been assured that Sheyoth was well and fine, than a sharp hiss and an echo of pain followed.

Sheyoth! The thought was instantaneous.

The gold jerked, and quickly took the two of them Between.

It is nothing, Mine. A small sliver of living Thread, and an even smaller injury. The Wings hare having a time of it up there.

There! Rhea barely had to manifest the thought before Eirinth angled appropriately, the dragon trying to piece her mask of serenity back together by calmly moving. As if she wasn’t still mourning. Rhea cut through the clump with another vicious belch of flame, and they returned to formation without further ado.

41-44. You suddenly see a clump of Thread. Your dragon wheels towards it. With a flash of hot fire, you manage to catch the whole clump, and turn it into harmless ash. And they say the Queen's Wing doesn't do anything, pfft. You'll prove them you're just as worthwhile as any of the fighting wings. Well done! +1 Flame Length

It wasn't just the high altitudes that were having a time of it, though, and too soon the blonde haired woman was full of regrets. Another clump of thread descended, and Sheyoth and she knew what they had to do. The queen took herself up, certain that her rider could catch the falling threat.

Elysa was certain herself, though after her earlier mishap, she waited until she was just a bit closer to the writhing threat. Ready, aim, fire--except there was no fire to be had. In fact, the device jammed at the worst possible time, and instead of turning into harmless ash, the tangle hit rider and dragon alike.

The gold bugled her alarm, even as she attempted to veer away. Unfortunately, the clump made little work as is it began to devour its victim. Thankfully, the gold threw herself Between, and the three long breaths were all it took for them to reappear.

The pain was intense.

The woman could already feel the pain on her hand, her arm, her shoulder and leg; could already feel Sheyoth pant as the two adjusted to the burn. Part of her knew that a call to the Healer's might well be in order, but ... She also knew it could have been much, much worse.

You okay? She asked quietly.

Well enough to keep fighting, beloved. But what of you? Should we--

I'm fine. The girl replied firmly. She didn't want or need Sheyoth to worry. She could still hold her flamethrower, could still sit upon Sheyoth. If it gets worse we'll go, okay? She finally conceded. But to leave her Wing so soon, and so early... No. They were all right.

Mostly.

4. This clump of thread had its eye on you. It defied all the odds and made it through not one, but three wings of dragon riders actively fighting above! It's up to you to flame it! If a Queen, your dragon puts you in position, and as you go to flame it down, you find your equipment's jammed! By the time you realize what's going on, the thread is on you, your arm, your legs, your dragon's neck back, and side. It has attached, and immediately starts to feast! Major Damage -15 HP if a Queen. plus Painful status for the next 3 turns. This will negate any XP gained, and cause double damage if the prompt includes damage (or has you roll for damage).

Eirinth stifled a cry, all but chained in place by her rider’s will. Muscle memory and training said not to deviate, but if she could only move a little higher, just to be a warning beacon—

No.

An uncharacteristic flare of anger went through the queen. < The children are being scored, > she sniffed. < What are they doing up there? >

Rhea knew Eirinth was just running on Fretting Mother Mode, no doubt exacerbated by the early death, but she held firm and kept her gaze open and ahead, and eventually Eirinth acquiesced. Even as they heard Sheyoth’s cry, the woman didn’t budge from her vigil, though she shared in a sympathetic pang with her beloved, who had held her breath until her wingmate returned from Between. This was going to be a rough day...Rhea shifted in her seat.

... and again.

Perhaps it was the pain from their earlier mishap or simply bad luck; perhaps the two hadn't been paying as close attention, or were so busy comforting one another they missed the danger slipping upon them from behind. But when the Thread hit, Sheyoth let out a squeal of surprise, and the bloom of pain that echoed through Elysia was sharp and sudden.

Not again!

Between! She commanded, feeling the icey nothingness wrap around them both like a comforting shroud. As terrifying as it was to be within such a realm of nothing, it was a blessing in its own way; the pain had ceased, though she knew it was but a temporary measure.

In another breath, they were back, though this time, the pale queen did not shrug off her wounds. Perhaps it would be time to return to the Healers.

The winds grew choppy for a few minutes. Threading to catch a falling dragon, the impact took the breath out of Eirinth, and she struggled against the strong push and pulls in the air more than usual. Rhea, however, remained as a rock atop her, unmovable and unwilling to bow to the weather this soon. She poured her strength into Eirinth, and together they found a second wind as it calmed.

Unhappy, unhappy. She was utterly unhappy. She'd not been blind to what had been going on around her, to what had been happening to her children. Susurinth's eyes were red but she was doing exactly what she'd been training to do and given her years flying and Betweening with accuracy she'd been doing okay. While some thread caught her back she simply shrugged it off, sending a wave to her Pavari to make certain she was paying attention. With flamethrower in hand she seemed to be, there was no real way to keep thread from hitting her.
