Morning's Musing

There was not a single breeze to stir the lake that morning, and the air was chilly and still as the sun rose to banish the dark shadows. Kal rose with the sun as always, uncurling and stretching his legs while he turned his head in the direction of the light. He didn't like to look at the heavy darkness that still remained in the land.

The little stallion broke the stillness of the lake as he lowered his head to take a drink. He watched as the ripples drifted outward, and then vanished to leave his own reflection in their place. Kal wasn't sure he liked his reflection very much. His face was delicate, some might have said pretty with the way the new sun made his horn and markings glitter. He dropped his head again, letting more ripples radiate outwards from where his horn touched the water's surface. He was proud of his horn, if nothing else. It was perhaps the only source of strength he had, because it was responsible for his healing magic. When his body was too fragile and his wings were too weak, he could say his magic was strong.

He lifted his head and waited for the ripples to settle once again. His horn was sharp, the delicate spiraling and healing ruse distracted from it's offensive capabilities. Kal had never looked at it as a weapon before, and it frightened him.

The little stallion quickly turned away from the water's edge and headed into the forest. What if he had to use his horn to defend himself, or someone else? His shame burned fiercely as he wondered just how long he could get away with running from his fears. Was that not what he was doing right that very moment? Kal stopped on the spot, and tried to firm up his resolve. He really didn't want to run, even though he was afraid. He wanted to be brave for once, and confront the problem so it went away instead of hounding him as he fled from those thoughts that scared him.

Glancing around, he was lucky to find an old, dead tree with a trunk that still remained standing. The wood was partially rotted and soft beyond the dry outer shell, but the upper half of the tree had long since snapped off and tumbled over so there was no weight to prevent the trunk from staying upright. Perhaps the injury had occurred after the tree was long dead, but the edges of the tree's mortal wound were dulled by time. Perhaps the tree had been snapped in it's prime by a stronger force.

Kal regarded the tree for some time, stuck deep in indecision as he mentally skirted the issue. Then finally he stepped forward and poked the trunk with his horn. The jab barely made a dent in the dry wood. His tail swished nervously, but he moved his head again, pressing down to leave a thin scratch across the trunk's surface. He used a bit more force the next time, testing his strength against the dead tree as he poked and scratched and jabbed experimentally. Finally he threw his small body into the job, using his entire strength to drive his horn into the wood until it cracked the surface and slid deep into the soft, decaying fibres inside. He almost got stuck since he had lodged it so firmly, and jarred a muscle in his neck pulling it out.

He lifted a wing to rub at his aching neck as he finally examined the mess he had made of the tree trunk. His horn could indeed be used as a weapon, even by one as small and weak as he was. But rather than reassure him, that knowledge just made him more afraid.
