"You're not in position to be telling me what to do" Devon said and continued to inspect Panther's body.
He made note of the spot on Panther's wing. He then placed a pair of headphones over Panther's ears. He turned on the machine it was connected to and the headphones gave out different pitches at different volumes. The machine displayed the volume level and pitch level for whatever it gave off. Devon recorded it along with Panther's reactions to each one. Some would hurt, some would just be annoying, some would probably not affect her at all.

I tried to move with a cool hand... It didn't go as I planned.
I'm full of rookie maneuvers... and gestures meant to be grand.
"My daisy, you make me go crazy, forever amaze me. Now let's let the day go lazy." Hiccadu, ever the bored and curious and nosy creature, slipped into the examination room as Devon performed the test, seating herself on one of the steel gurneys that served as a table like a giant, reptilian lion.
Studying the two others in the room, she licked her lips and flicked her ears, ever silent.
She merely watched, studied, waited. For what, it was impossible to know. "My daisy, you know what I'm after- your musical laughter. A more beautiful disaster..."
I cant believe what you create... When you let your heart detonate.
You leave a path of delightful destruction. You're quite the bomb, my daisy... Daisy Cutter ~ 311

Headphones settled uncomfortably on her ears, in the wrong spot and with the wrong pressure. She was familiar with these from the outside place, and they gave off a sound that John called "music". Some of it was angry, and she liked it. Some was sad and reminded her of the slaughterhouse, and she didn't like it all too much.
She expected it to be the sad music, and at this point she wouldn't have cared but instead, a tiny, almost inaudible beep came from the headphones, as if it was far away. She strained her ears.
BEEP!
Her head visibly jerked to one side, and the headphones ripped off, falling to the floor with a clatter. The wire got caught underneath her chin, and she moved her head, catching the wire in her mouth and biting down, sawing the wire between her teeth. There was a small jolt of electricity that went through her, but then she spit out the wire and watched from the corner of her eye as it split in two.

"Humph. Apparantly they didn't strap your head down hard enough" Devon said. He kicked the pieces of broken headphone over to the side and picked up a punishment strap. He gave Panther a hard smack across the face with it, then put it down. He took the headstrap and made sure Panther's head was facing upwards. He then strapped her head down nice and tight so it couldn't be moved.
He then went and got another set of headphones. There were spare tools around just in case things like that happened.

Panther reacted predictably to the strap. At least, her body did. A red welt appeared on her cheek, and the skin around it grew pale. But, for her credit, the little girl didn't shed either a tear or a whimper in acknowledgment of the treatment.
After all, Hiccadu was in the room. Panther wouldn't show any kind of weakness if she could help it. It was a woman-woman territorial instinct all animals had.

I'm full of rookie maneuvers... and gestures meant to be grand.
"My daisy, you make me go crazy, forever amaze me. Now let's let the day go lazy." Hiccadu noticed the lack of response, and smirked. A barely audible purr skated along the back of her throat, and her tail swung lazily from side to side as her tongue snaked out in pleasure.
She took a sadistic, perverse pleasure in watching other Chimerae writhe. Even more when they tried not to. "My daisy, you know what I'm after- your musical laughter. A more beautiful disaster..."

Devon placed the new headphones on Panther's head and plugged them into the sound machine. He then reset the machine and restarted his observation. The machine would once again make beeps and hums at different pitches and volumes. Devon picked up his clipboard and his pen in his medical gloved hands and watched Panther with intent.

Panther tapped her fingers against the metal table, trying to listen to that instead of the beeps and hums that came from the headphones. She was able to ignore most of them, except for one that made her giggle, oddly enough. Though she would never admit it, it wasn't exactly a happy giggle. More like she was going totally insane.
John looked around at the Chimerae around him. There were some new faces he didn't recognize. "How long have you guys been here?" he asked them in general.
((Sorry for the short post.))

Devon raised an eyebrow at Panther's interesting reactions, but wrote his observations down with the frequencies and volumes.
After a while, he turned off the machine and took off the headphones. He then inspected her ears again to see if he could see any physical damage done in her ears.
Devon then picked up a dental mirror and a dental excavator. He shined a dental light over Panther's mouth, then began scratching and picking away at her teeth.

Apsalar didn't glance up - she remembered John from before he had escaped. The question didn't apply to her. But it did recall her from her own miserable thoughts and banging head, which was only partially a good thing. Now she was noticing it more, but she was no longer in a stupor.
Her eye was caught by the slightest of movements in the back of her cage. She made her breathing slow and regular, watching it intently.
A mouse. Not as good as her rat, she thought wistfully, but something. And it was right...there...
Her body stiffened, she watched silently for a few more seconds. Then her hand snapped out.
And she growled softly and repeatedly under her breath as the tiny animal managed to dodge her grasp - and thus ensured itself the chance to live another day.
It was okay. She'd get another. But she wanted to get one as soon as she could, to begin the process that the smokey-smelling scientist had promised her.
You'll die if you keep doing that.
A promise.
And she was going to collect if she had to do all the work herself.

Tobart focused on breathing. In, out. In, out. Shallow breaths. In, out. Tried not to focus on his stinging eyes. In, out, in, out. He never was the best at making moral decisions.
In, out. Not thinking; only breathing. Nothing had happened to warrant tears.
The Chimera filled his lungs to burst, relishing the soothing exhale.

John's gaze was drawn to Tobart, hearing the Chimera's inhales and exhales. This was the friend who had kept him from mutilating himself on the bars of his cage any further. "Thank you, for earlier," John murmured quietly. He didn't want the other scientists to interrupt the conversation. Devon's problems were enough.

"John... why did you have to come back?" Tobart unfairly, unthinkingly said. He realized what he had said and implied, and placed a hand over his eyes. "Sorry," he quickly apologized, "I didn't mean it that way. I mean..." he paused, looking for the words. None coming, he said, "no problem."
So long as John didn't get hurt. John was practically the anchor around here. And with his recapture... and then Panther. No one would ever leave for good. Not even Rei; Rei'd be back soon enough, he was morbidly sure.

Apsalar's gaze turned to Tobart as well, wondering in an absent way if he was all right. His breathing had been a little too rhythmic and regular to be normal. She opened her mouth to ask if he was 'all right' - as all right as a Chimera could be, anyway - but was stopped by John speaking first.
She lowered her head and looked down at John when Tobart spoke again. Her eyes opened wide, causing a flash of pain from her head, at his next words.
What are you thinking? Why would you say that?
But she didn't ask, not only because she didn't really have the words, but because she knew why.
The frustration. The anger. And the fear.
Yeah, she knew why.

John knew the meaning behind his words, but they brought an ache to him. He realized how badly he had failed all the Chimerae, and it weighed heavily on him. Everything was against him, and he was beginning to notice how useless it all was. Even if they all escaped, where would they go? Who would accept them? How would they be free, out there, when they didn't even have the necessary paperwork to live like anyone else?
"It wasn't a choice to come back," he sighed, looking at the holes in the ceiling of his cage. His eyes drooped all of a sudden, and he leaned heavily against the bars of his cell. He hadn't slept in... A long time. Longer than he cared to figure out.
A yawn escaped him, and he closed his eyes, listening to the sounds of whirring, blipping machines.
