Candidate Bowling had been so much fun! Mint Chocolate Chip had thoroughly enjoyed her sister’s game, and her company, but some other goings-on caught her attention, and she stopped short to observe.

Oooooh! Oh, yes, this definitely required some looking into. As some of the Candidates began to gather around Teal and Yellow Spiral Blue, she joined them, her shoulders and hips bumping a few legs when she trotted between Aryale and Bukichi. She stood as a spectator among the small crowd, waiting to see who would touch and who wouldn't!

The eggshell egg had hatched! And that blue beckoning rhem to come pet it. If not for the training he’d been given, he might have been tempted. “Sorry,” he muttered. “We really can’t.” It wasn’t worth it. Who knew how a dragonet would respond to a candidate being in their space.

He looked to Killakeeth. He wanted to introduce his favorite gold to Kel. And maybe, should he impress, his dragon. But she’d already know them, wouldn’t she? She’d known them as eggs. Shards, when one of your friends was a queen, life was difficult! He waved at her.

Rio

While Rio couldn't and wouldn't say that he'd had a favorite egg - they'd all been wondrous after all - he had been very fond of the Teal and Yellow one. It had appreciated his scritching technique, and Rio did love to be appreciated, even for such a small thing. It was very validating to the sociable (and maybe even slightly needy) candidate. So when the blue from the egg invited the candidates closer, he could hardly stand back! If the hatchling hadn't openly asked for the attention, he'd not be so bold, but he plainly stated that he wanted them closer, and wanted their attentions, and Rio was ever a people-pleaser.

He didn't hesitate to hook an arm in Rasthell's - and offer one to Nuamia as well, if she was interested - and make his way over to make the blue's acquaintance properly, bright smile and scritching fingers primed and ready.

"Hello there!" he practically cooed. "It's a pleasure to see you out of your shell!"

Vosin/Gold Killakeeth
Killakeeth thrummed happily as her offspring one by one picked out their riders. Still so many to go! She knew they could do it. The gold was still waiting for one of her children to pick out a certain candidate, she’d secretly been watching him this whole time. She had faith his dragon was among this clutch. Her clutch.

She responded with a fond hum for Marinel. Do not give up hope yet. Not until the last dragon has hatched and Impressed. I am sure one is here for you.

Candidate Omurntas Western
He froze as a dark green came up to him then Aelyx. But neither one was what she wanted. She searched some more before finding the one. More dragons were now making their moves. The two browns, and two blues, and another green. The green seemed the most confident of the bunch in what she wanted.

Omurntas was surprised when one of the blue hatchlings offered to allow people to pet him. Some candidates even took him up on that offer. He shook his head and shrugged his shoulders. Eggshell finally managed to break free into another green.

Rinis- Apprentice Firelizard Breeder Western
Rinis thought several of the babies were enjoying the attention from the candidates. Lucky for the people, the babies didn’t seem hostile or it could have ended very badly. It still might if the candidatemasters noticed them. Those was dem risks on the sands!

TETH

Teth was there, behaving. He hoped Killakeeth noticed how he wasn't causing problems and how the babies were doing okay. Maybe then she wouldn't be mad at him anymore?????????

Marinel couldn’t help the smile that came over his face at her words. He relied them to them his group. “Killa says not to give up hope until the last egg has impressed,” he said. He was looking at Kel. “I’ll introduce you to her sometime. Sometimes she’s cranky, but she’s a friend.”

His attention was captured by the greens playing. It was nice to see that. The fighting that the hatching had started with was over, seemingly.

He hoped it stayed that way.

Trotting over, there was only one on the Sands that the Blue and Black Rosette green desired. She spared no look at any other Candidates, and though she did fondly give her green Mint Chocolate Chip sister a head-butt, it was only one Candidate among them that held her gaze.

AryaleMine, forgive your Yaguareth for taking so long. Things had needed to be settled before I could properly focus on you. And rest assured, there was only ever you. The girl would find herself lost in those rainbow, whirling eyes, as Yaguareth offered the Candidate all of her hearts. Strength, honor, devotion, vindication, love, and a burning desire to fight. Pern needed her. Pern needed them. No one would ever haunt Aryale; never again would the girl need to feel insecure or wary. Any battles that need to be fought, any vengeance that needed to be enacted, this green was here, heart, claw, fang, and wing, for Aryale to lean upon.

She was Yaguareth's, now, and however high up Aryale wished to climb, this green would be there to carry her. For now and for always.

The Sunset green gave a cheerful chirrup, and ran hurtling right into the Hot Pink 80s egg! ... Ooops! When she crashed into it, the egg began to roll. ... Oh no! With a cheep of dismay, she tried to stop it, but it was skidding away on the sands, and her little paws were just making it go. It wasn't going fast, mind you, but it was going.

Can... can somebody help??? the little voice was cheerful but a little worried. Oh dear. This wasn't usually her thing, even though it was kind of fun (don't tell Mama.)

Solameya | She/Her | HRW

Oop! An escapee so to speak, and the little green did ask for help stopping their, ah, roll away sibling. “I got it. It’ll be okay.” Solameya finally broke her stance to cut off the skittering away egg with gentle hands, expression tight. No one bite her head off please.

But the baby and the egg didn't seem upset over being helped. If anything, the Sunset green chirped, reaching out to boop the girl who had helped them. Thank you! she said sweetly, before investigating the egg. Hot Pink 80s egg gave a little shiver, and then a crack appeared in its shell. Hello! It was ready to come out.

... Of course, coming out meant being able to break the shell, and the shell was tricky. One leg popped out, a lovely shade of blue. Then another. Then another, and another... until all of the legs were out. Yet the baby's head remained captive.

Rolling, the infant within managed to get himself caught beneath his shell. Drat.

Never fear! Sunset green would help! She scrabbled at his egg until it was moving again, but this time the baby could put his legs beneath himself, and go on his own!

Tonori

Tonori was not tempted to give the blue hatchlings any skritches behind the eye ridge. Well, he wasn't very tempted. The rules were the rules, and he had seen firsthand why they were in place. There were a lot of pointy parts on a dragon, and a newborn probably lacked the proprioception to manage all of them if startled or upset or just suddenly off-balanced. It was absolutely reasonable not to approach hatchlings, even those which seemed to permit candidates to do so. Besides, those were the rules.

Even when an egg began to role, Tonori's will was not shaken. It was not rolling especially quickly, and there was no reason for him to go chasing after it, possibly alarming the hatchlings milling around in search of their bondmates or running into distracted candidates. Not to mention, again, it was not in the rules to go after eggs. Wait for the dragon within to hatch, and then wait for it to come to you, if that's its plan. Tonori was fine with that.

And anyway, it seemed his help was unnecessary. A little blue was working his way out.

Vosin/Gold Killakeeth
The gold sent feelings of approval to her mate for his good behavior. While her words for Mari had been meant for the boy alone, he had a big heart as he shared it with his sandmates. Killakeeth approved.

Vosin admired the beautiful green that quickly claimed her rider. If she was holding on to Vesin’s hand tightly, it was mainly from joy. The rolling of an egg caught her attention. It also caught Killakeeth’s. The gold swiveled her head as a candidate moved in front to stop it. She moved her head to lightly rest the tip of her muzzle on the shell.

Everything alright? Not shaken up? Killakeeth checked. All seemed ok. She watched fondly as the little blue managed to get everything but the most important part out.

Bukichi

Touch him? The young man just gave Aryale an incredulous look before giving his head a small shake. No... No. Even if the young dragon seemed clearly happy to be touched--everyone was watching, and they'd been explicitly told not to do so.

His legs were bumped unexpectedly as one of the green's squeezed past them, and Bukichi couldn't help but snort with amusement. Lively little thing! Oh, and here came another one... but there was no doubting her purposeful stride, her focus as she strode towards the pair of them. No, not the pair of them--towards Aryale.

Later, he would be utterly ashamed that his knee-jerk reaction was a surge of bitterness, and, more deeply hidden, something nearly akin to despair. He had found something here at the Weyr that he'd never expected.... and now she had been claimed by a creature with a much greater purpose and need for her than his could ever be. He stared for what felt like hours, his tongue cleaved to the roof of his mouth as emotion threatened to choke him into stillness. And his emotions were irrational. This bitterness, the sudden surge of possessiveness--how could she leave him? After coaxing him into dropping his guard, into letting down those thorny walls he'd built to protect himself... and now she had to go.

She was a dragonrider. And who was he, except Bukichi the thief? The murderer? The second best.

"She's yours?" He asked as if he didn't know, praying to Faranth that the huskiness in his voice could be mistaken for emotion. Positive emotion. "She's beautiful, Aryale."

Candidate Omurntas Western
Things are rolling now, Omurntas thought with a raised eyebrow as one hatchling sent its sibling’s egg rolling across the sands. One brave soul stopped it. The baby, another blue, managed to get his legs out, but not his head. He snorted as his sister rolled him up onto his legs. Now he was running.

“Better get ready to dodge,” he murmured to Aelyx. If that one started to rocket around, it could hurt running into ankles.

“Ooooh nooooo!” Rinis laughed. “I hope he doesn’t get too dizzy after rolling around like that.” She hoped he’d get the rest of his shell off of himself quickly. He needed to see to Impress didn’t he?

Erastan: Western Blue Rider

Eratsan scowled. Well, he was always scowling but this had a twinge of confusion. He knew that they had been growing apart since he had impressed but to hear his twin talk about her other friends made his guts twist in something akin to jealousy. It had always just been the two of them after all. Even with Aspalath at his side learning that the old outlook of them vs the world has shifted, shook him.

Which was why his reply was rather harsher than he meant it. "So you could get hurt instead? If they are too slow or too stupid to get out of the way in time that's on them." Never mind that a candidate had already died that day on the hot sands.

But then he did sit up when Huarwar impressed. The 'cute' guy that has lost his twin on the same sands he now built a new bond on Erastan shifted uncomfortably. He wouldn't have wanted him to die either. "Sorry." he muttered back to his twin. "They'll be okay." he added trying to sound reassuring and that he might actually care for anyone beyond his twin and his dragon. It was an effort.
