The outside world consisted of one scientist who had left the room early, and the rest of the Chimerae who were in cages still in the holding room. The cages were now on the floor now, because of John's strength and grief.
When the cages had clashed down around them all, the noise was muted. Only Panther's screaming remained in his mind, and it cut everything else out. He clutched his head as the scream repeated itself over and over, with that last sound in his mind that just didn't belong. That thing. That sound. It didn't belong. It should never have been heard that day, not from her. Not from Panther.
He held his ears and leaned forward on his knees, not feeling as the serrated bars of the container cut into his legs. The blades were to keep Chimera from trying to escape by slipping out sideways, since many feline or serpentine hybrids were capable of doing so. Now he didn't feel it. It could have shred through his skin, and he felt nothing, heard nothing, sensed nothing but that thing in Panther's screaming.
It played itself again in his mind, but it was newer. Closer. And that sound wasn't there.
John kept his hands clasped over his ears and turned his head, looking with eyes that didn't see at Hound. His vision slowly cleared, but his eyes looked dead, as if they hadn't yet registered anything since he heard that sound.
Blood, the chimera said. Over and over. Blood.
Panther's blood. John could smell it too, but Hound's olfactory senses were far more acute than his own; the blood was very faint.
Panther's dead. Panther's blood, Panther's death-scream, Panther's dead.
"Panther." It was a funny name, considering she was nothing like a Panther. She was a human being, with wings and a sweet disposition. The sweetest child anyone could ask for. Yet, she was named after a carnivorous beast that stalked and hunted and mauled other animals.
And they killed her. A giggle escaped John, but from his eyes fell dry tears. Anguish pooled over the film protecting his eyeballs from dust and bacterium, but there was no physical evidence of his very real grief.
"Panther's dead," he whispered through a choked throat. "Panther's dead." The blood was evidence, but it was the scream that told him so. The scream was the incriminating proof that was no physical evidence, but the only thing that proved to the Chimerae beyond a doubt, that Panther was really gone.

Hound reached through the bars of his cage for a second and made clawing motions at the air before retracting his his arm back into the cage. He settled back into the dark back of his cage and hung his head. His tears dripped down his face as he moaned and groaned, "Give me blood...Give it to me...give it to me now. Then his he looked rapidly up and roared, "Give it to me Now!" but his words turned into a deep gutteral bellow as he said 'Now'. Hound was getting more and more stressed, and his brains chemistry was as always out of balance. If only they'd give him the blood he needed. He wondered why they only ever gave him mere drops. It was both demoralizing and infuriating to him. Because of his constant psychological struggle, he didn't even know he wasn't the only chimera.

Yani stalked through the hallways, passing the door to the Chimeran storage room and ignoring the screams, yells, and sobs from within. The young girl had died, and that was what was causing them grief, most of them anyway. That was to be expected.
What Yani hadn't expected was Devon's rapid measure to kill her, however, and the scene he came upon in the experimentation room. He stayed there silently, surveying the room. Smoke was sitting on a counter, sunglasses on, opening a flame against a new cigarette, staring at the white-covered corpse of the avian-feline hybrid. Hiccadu was pressing Devon up against the wall by his throat, his blood-specked white lab coat parted near the bottom to reveal dark pants and black shoes. Devon was remaining cool as ever, though Yani could detect a mixture of resentment and anxiety in the face of TAIS's Chimeran counterpart.
"Release him, Hiccadu," Yani stated calmly. He walked over to Panther's corpse and lifted the white sheet. Her face was pale, and her lips were almost white. Her mouth was a sadistic director's mutilation of teeth, gums, and burnt flesh. Parting her lips to see her gums, Yani could see the reason. Where the metal had been cold, her once-pink gums were white around the edges of the wounds, black in the middle where the skin wouldn't have healed. Rips along her molars were evident, as was the holes in her teeth where sensors belonged.
"What were the results?"
Yani covered the corpse up again, his voice almost completely monotone.

After that bellow, Hound reverted to his violent side. He sniffed the air and listened as best he could before saying aloud, "I smell you. Your scent is unmistakable. Humans...heheheha," and ending with a wicked laugh. He was a much darker individual when violent. Harder to predict. Harder to understand. "I smell you...I smell you all."

Once Devon was free from Hiccadu, he walked over and turned the machine back on that was recording the nerve reactions. The information was saved and Devon pressed a button that printed it out. Devon also handed Yani his observation notes that he was making as he was viewing Panther's reactions to the temperature and pain. "Here are the results, sir" he said, giving his boss what he had.

A part of her knew that.
But the rest of her was perfectly aware that her mind was not her own- never would be completely- and TAIS forced her to bend to Yani's will and she obediently dropped Devon to the floor, jerking as if she had been struck and backing away from everyone, hugging herself as she bowed her head.
Restless, angry, and unable to do anything about it, she changed back into her true form and paced restlessly, her eyes switching back and forth from the dead Chimera, to Yani, to Devon, and to occasionally the scientist calmly watching in the background. Outside, she could hear Panther's male friend screaming with - was she hearing right? - twisted laughter.
Well, looks like they were about to have a psychotic on their hands. Thanks, you b*****d doctor.

Hound sat still in his cage; laughing to himself wickedly. He was not in a good way without the blood he needed. Right then he was violent and demented, and at the same time the most sane he'd ever be. When he was violent, he was calculating, and thusly, unpredictable. He listened for footsteps, and sniffed the air for the scent of possible targets. "I smell you all you pathetic little creatures. So weak and cowardly that you cage us. I smell your fear." The smell was like a rare wine to him, though he had no idea what the word wine meant or if the drink was even real.

Panther's scream penetrated the walls of Tobart's hands and body. No, no, no, "no, no!" his thoughts involuntarily turning into words. "Please no!" the Chimera was crying openly now. He didn't care. It didn't matter who saw him, who knew. It just didn't matter anymore. His thoughts turned to John. He heard it; John's dark laugh. It was frightening. Had John finally lost it all? His mind, gone along with Panther?
It wasn't confirmed that Panther was dead. It couldn't be so. Not now...
The other Chimera, Hound. Hound was terrifying. If ever Tobart was placed into the ring with that particular Chimera, he wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do. It would be better if they were all dead. If they were all dead...
Tobart stared at his own armorless underarm. He could do it. He could die. On his own terms. He raised his arm up to his face, feeling out where the best spot would be to bite. He unhinged his jaw to let his fangs out to their full potential. Ready, ready...
But could he do this? Should he do this? No time for such thinking! Better to bite and be done!
So he did. There was only a strangled gurgle to be heard around Tobart's mouth, the deep penetration of his fangs hurting far more than the actual venom. For now.
---
Lonomia curled into the deepest recesses of his cage (which wasn't very deep at all), trying to avoid the madness. What was going on? All he could hear was agony. The screaming, the weeping, the laughter that aroused such dark thoughts and feelings. He wanted it to stop. He wanted it all to stop, he just didn't have the words for it. The boy covered his ears, "No!" he screamed, "No, no!" His voice would be gone the next day for his action, but he didn't realize, nor did he care.

Hound at that moment, the very moment that Tobart bit himself, At that moment, Hound let out a scream of agony and sorrow. He screamed, "Give me blood!!! I Need It! Please give it to me, give it...! Please give it, please? I don't want to die..." He'd once again returned to his sorrow. He'd returned to being the unstable begger. The mental torture Hound had endured in his lifetime was worse than any physical wound he had ever sustained. And it showed in his psychological state of being. He was shaking uncontrollably now, fear and his need for blood driving him into uncontrollable spasms.

Hound's scream at the precise time of his bite caused Tobart to jerk, his jaw to clamp shut. The primary venom had been injected, though the rest was dripping uselessly into the Chimera's lap, the long fangs having skewered straight through the flesh of his arm.
It was no worse than what he had endured before, but pain was pain and Tobart yanked his fangs from himself to prevent further agony, a scream being suppressed into many tears and grunts.
He knew the properties of his own venom. Already the muscles in Tobart's arm had begun to cramp, the first of many unpleasant symptoms of the hemotoxin.
[[Well this has turned into a nice little gore fest, hasn't it?]]

((Quite. And sorry Miinefield, I should've messaged you sweatdrop ))
Yani glanced at the results, then back at Devon, then back at the results, analyzing the numbers for their meaning. When he was finished, he gave a simple "I see" and put the paper down on the monitor.
"Dispose of this," Yani told Smoke, gesturing towards the limp form underneath the sheet. "Devon, you will store the records underneath the girl's file before the end of today. I would be interested to know what mechanism of hers kicked in that caused an oral examination to be fatal."
John looked at his cage bars, seeing the blood from opened wounds and new wounds trickle around them and drip onto the tiled floor beneath. No doubt some scientists were already informing TAIS drones that the cages needed to be re-stacked, but he did not particularly care at that point.
Panther's dead. Blood. Hound, blood. Dead. The smell of smoke, and death, and blood. Smoke. UP5G77. UP5G77.
UP5G77.
His deadened eyes fell on something that could be the Chimerae's salvation...
...or their damnation.
Smoke inhaled deeply from his cigarette before standing up straight from the wall he was leaning on. He tapped some of the ashes into a nearby trash container, then took Panther's gurney and stepped out into the hallway, wheeling it with him. A scream pierced through his mind, but it wasn't a death-scream like the girl's. This was a pained, miserable, begging screech.
He felt something reverberate within his spine, some left over feeling from the girl's scream. It wasn't a personal reaction. It was instinct. Something she did made the other Chimerae a little bit crazier.
Some s**t-storm was about to go down.

"You can't be serious!" She hissed, pacing. "No! This can't be allowed! Not after what happened, not after what he did-!"
She stopped short, the anger making her beside herself and not trusting herself to speak. She turned away, sniffing the air.

Hound continued to scream for a moment or two while he stood up in his cage, still shaking. With his feet he grabbed the two places on the bars of his cage that were not serrated or sharp and began pushing. He used his arms to push against the opposite side of his cage, He needed to get free, He needed blood. He could smeel nothing but blood now, and what's more he could see it. Instinct and rage, sorrow and hunger, these things were taking complete control of him now, and he was going to destroy his cage just to get some of that blood. It didn't occur to him however that this action, if it succeeded, would be his chance to escape and take others with him. It didn't even occur to him that he was being watched by the security cameras.
