~Phayton~

And then Henwas went down under the violent green dragonet's claws and teeth -- and stopped moving. His twin Huarwar's scream cut like a knife through Phayton's heart. Death was something he was familiar with, but not like this, not ripped to shreds on the Hatching Ground. Hatchings were supposed to be times of joy! And while there had been moments of joy and even laughter, there had been much, much more blood and horror.

"Don't look," he told Jailla again, shielding the sobbing girl with his body and arms. At this point he didn't care if he Impressed or not -- he just wanted them to get out of this Hatching alive.

They'd been wrong to think the tide had turned, that the violence was over. In the blink of an eye, it began again, but this time it was a green on a rampage, ripping into one male Candidate after another, and the sounds...Faranth, the sounds were wretched. He would have closed his eyes if he could have, but instead, he moved to stabilize Isilje as she staggered back, aghast, only to catch at Alya as she fell to the sand. He didn't quite get there in time, but he did, gently, try to support her and maybe coax her to her feet.

He wanted to say that it was alright, but it wasn't. But he said it anyway, because what else could he say? "Shh, now, it's alright. It'll be alright." No, it wouldn't, and he very much missed Lennik right now. "Come on, you need to get up. It's not safe."

Not safe to be off your feet when you might need to run.

~L'del & Helsinth~

It was taking everything that L'del had to restrain the bronze from rushing back onto the Sands. But she's hurting them! Helsinth raged, his eyes twin pools of swiftly whirling red, his food forgotten.

"I know... I know!" L'del exclaimed, physically holding the darkest bronze even as he attempted to reach him through their bond to still him. "But others are already trying to help, just as I did earlier. And, look closer. Notice anything about her victims?"

will end her reign of terror, the bronze hissed, his eyes flashing angrily. I... Suddenly, he stopped. There... was a common factor there. Once again, L'del was right. Oh, how awesome he was!

But he couldn't just sit idly by, any more than his rider could have when Illiandinth had started attacking others.

Reaching out, Helsinth called to as many of the female Candidates as he could. Ladies! The green one is only going after the males! She will not harm you. Only you can stop her!

Zinath keened as she felt one of their children die. One of A'ral's. Keened, and keened, and keened. "... Don't look, girls," A'ral said, unaware that tears were streaming down his cheeks. Oh Faranth. Oh Faranth, Henwas had sometimes been a bully, but... to lose even one. He had not deserved this. A'ral had knowingly sent his children out to die. This death rested squarely on his shoulders.

With how the Touching had gone, he could only feel responsible. And oh, how it grieved him. His heart broke with it, all over again. This was not the first time he'd watched one of his own die, but he'd had hopes. He'd had hopes and dreams for each and every one of them. "Back away from her! Don't risk yourselves! Let her approach you!"

Oh Faranth, if she decided that she was done with the boys and moved on? All of the girls that had been called to her side might suddenly be targets. He couldn't intervene, couldn't interfere. Not even to save a life. There was a lump of lead where his heart had been, heavy with the wait of a guilt that would not subside. Zinath keened for Henwas, for the death of one of their own. For his bravery. His sacrifice. His loss.

The Eggshell White Egg
Freedom. Finally! While Dokkaeth had been sweet in trying to free her, and the other one had crashed in to her, it was The Scarlet Green that had finally forced her way into her shell. Between the scrabbling, the clawing, and the last smack with her tail that a large white spilled onto the sands.

It took her a moment to right herself, and to assess what was going on. There was chaos, madness, and she felt rage from her sister. Dragons were keening, a Candidate had died, and her sister was getting set upon by boys!

Well now- - that really would not do.

With a loud screech she darted forward, and though her eyes were red with rage, she just barely kept herself from attacking. SISTER MINE! You must calm! You must relax! Come here, away from the boys. Come here, beneath my wing, and set your rage aside. The men are not worth an ounce of your attention! Come, lay your woes on me, and let those creatures rot.

Turning to Vedmath she said more loudly. AND YOU! The blood on the sands is not hers but yours! It was YOU who drove her to this! It was YOU who did not stand back! It was YOU who oppressed her from the start! GET YOURS OFF AND LEAVE HER BE! She hissed and snarled and it was clear that she was not afraid to start the fight all over again.

Helsinth has wits -- Listen to him. Get thee gone, men! And that includes you, so-called-hero Hessianth. Be gone, for this fight is not yours to win! Go back to yours, and let a woman handle this.

There would be no arguing from this one. She was enraged and concerned. They were treating her sister poorly. A Candidate had died, and blood had been spilled, but she was unwavering. There was too much pain an fear here already.

Sistermine, come to me. Let me make this right. Let us move on from pain -- you have shown them your worth but it is time to carry on. And she spread her wings, waiting to embrace her poor beloved and beaten sister.

Alya

She blindly reached out to accept Rio's hand, unable to tear her eyes away from that broken body. His gentle coaxing was enough to slowly, slowly get her to stand.... but it was when she heard Zinath keen that she finally burst into tears. Her heart hurt. Everything hurt. She ran away from her boring life, ran away to the Weyr--and now she wasn't sure if she hadn't made a horrible mistake.

She wept for those who had been injured. She wept for the death of a boy she'd never met. She wept for the one who mourned him so openly. And, selfishly, she wept for herself, her uncertain future.

Maybe her family had been right. Maybe she was nothing more than a stupid little girl. Who would ever see her as a dragonrider of Pern?

The piercing keen of a dragon was enough to make Iathe flinch--but it was not a dragon who died, no. The Candidatemaster's dragon was honoring the death of the boy whom the green had savaged... and in doing so, confirmed what they all feared. Iathe grit her jaw sharply enough to make it ache, refusing to let tears fall.

Another jolt struck her as a voice entered her head--one of the dragons, ordering girls forward to stop the green. Only they? A fat lot of good that had done earlier, she thought bitterly. A'ral's words confirmed what she knew she should do.

Hating her inability to act, Iathe stood there, grinding her teeth so loudly that they hurt. The little white that burst forward was enough to make her stare, her eyes burning red. Shards, would this one seek blood, too?

The taste of ichor on her tongue, the pain of Dezerac's blows, and the keening of the adult dragon arced through the Scarlet Green. And then, like a gift from Faranth herself, came that sweet voice. That most beloved, dear voice. The voice of her sister.

I hurt them. I hurt them. I made them bleed, and one... one had died. And one willed her between. The dragonet froze, the shock of realization shivering through her. Did she...

Did she.

Should she?

Wavering, uncertain and unsure, the baby Green gave a cry of grief and pain. What had she done?

Balancing from one foot to the other, one wing gone limp, the dragonet's eyes went white.

Between?

Stay?

Between?

Stay?

Once again, that voice inserted itself, wrapping around the Green and refusing to leave her alone. And with a cry of shame and fear, the baby ran to hide beneath her sister's wing, shaking like a leaf in a storm.

“Therianth.” Love and wonder filled Shahera’s voice. “Don’t worry Marinel, if one of them is meant for you they will find you at the healers.” As the reached the entrance she gestured for Marinel to go to the healers as she turned to leave the Sands.

Through what felt like a fog the fact that green was still rampaging registered with Shahera. She almost turned to go help as there were people she cared about still out there. A small headbutt stopped her. It is all right, mine. Let others take care of it. You have done enough.

But...Therianth was right. There was nothing she could do but hope. That didn’t mean it had to sit well with her. Then the keening started. Had a hatchling gone between? With her back still to the Sands Shahera’s hand became a fist on Therianth’s head. There was nothing she could do. It was time to let the burden of protecting be carried by another. Shahera took a very shaky step out of the Sands and the future. Let the world fall apart behind them.

L'nik and Brown Hessianth

You coddle her! You take blame away from her! Hessianth continued to make his way back onto the sands and L'nik found himself forcibly pulling the brown back - even as he pulled against the arms that took around his stocky body, struggling against them and howling in anger. Enough. Do not have this fight. There are more important things to do. She has your sister. Who do we need? he urged, doing his best to redirect the heart of what it was Hessianth had come out to do.

The brown huffed, flaring his wings as he watched the two girls taking solace of lies in each other. But his was right, and instead of goading the fight to him, he went to where his heroics would serve better. He went to Vedmath. Gently, the brown nudged his head against the bronze, crooning with some reassurance. In this, L'nik was fine with joining the new bronzerider with his stubborn brown.

"Need any help from us? He's going to help whether it's wanted or not," he added with a half smile. Ah ha ha.

Isilje

The girl couldn't help but openly weep for the loss of someone she didn't know. That green....at least the White was there to stand against her. In her heart, and head, the small albino cheered for the White. Let her quell that anger...watching the Green hide, she realized....she hadn't understood...but now she did...

Esfir

The keening of a dragon grieving drove all other thought from Esfir's mind. Head whipping up, she saw a candidate down and realized what had happened while she'd been busy hiding in Rylyrr's chest.

"Oh no," she whispered as tears pricked at her eyes. She didn't know the boy, but she couldn't help crying softly. Even so, she'd heard another dragon to the girls on the sands, telling them to approach the green. She hadn't thought anything of it, but now she made herself look. Everyone the green had harmed had been a boy. The green had killed a boy.

And even as she stood in shock, she saw another little white appear. Saw the green freeze and give voice to her own grief. Had she been so lost in her anger that reason had forsaken her until now?

She watched the green run for her clutchmate and felt an odd wave of pity for the little thing.

"Rylyrr," she whispered, half afraid to speak, "what's going to happen to her? She... she won't try to go between, will she?"

~L'del & Helsinth~

Helsinth was no longer struggling to reach the Sands. With a sigh of relief, L'del hugged his selflessly brave dragon, before releasing him once more. "I appreciate your willingness to help them," he said gently, caressing the dragon's headknobs. "But this is one fight that we can't get involved in."

Helsinth was only half listening, his attention divided between his rider and the Sands. Thank you, dear sister, he called to the white one. She seemed to have some sense, and was, thankfully, helping to resolve the situation.

Farellen heard K'gan say the white was ok, and had Impressed, he let out what only could be interpreted as a relieved sigh and closed his eyes "goo..." he whispered, he wanted to sleep, but he was dimly aware of more eggs and hatchlings needing to find Theirs, he knew if he was unconscious, his dragon might Between if it was there on the sands today ... He didn't realise just how lucky he had 'only' been mauled by Hunter and Demon, he was unaware of the chaos currently on the sands. He cried out in pain when someone bumped his arm in the rush to treat the other candidates. "than...s... gan...cars..soo" he whispered, eyes.....eye fluttering until he felt rather than heard Zinath's keening. "WHA?!" he cried, trying to get up, crying out again as the pain seized him and he fell back "please..." he breathed "what happ...", blood tears streaking down his face as his heart broke feeling the sorrow from Zinath.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Serfie was NOT prepared for the keening from Zinath, her heart felt like it was going to burst and tears flowed freely down her face... oh Faranth, how did riders cope? it HAD to be so much worse for A'ral .. for the first time, she felt genuine sorrow and hurt for someone else, true hurt, she wanted to go and comfort him and his Green... how did they STAND this? She was on her hands and knees on the Sands, sobbing til her chest hurt, she didn't even SEE another white hatch and confront it's killer sister.
That crunch had frozen Adar in place, her face blanching at the realization of what just happened. The fallen boy's twin's anguish, cursing at the Scarlet green, Zinath's keening, all cemented the deal. Oh no...Her heart ached for them. She wrapped her arms around herself as her eyes welled with tears. That poor family, that poor boy. She sniffled, turning her gaze curiously to the white that drew the green close. The green looked so upset too. Don't go. Grief makes people say all sorts of things, but don't Between because of it.
H A R O L
Harol flinched and had looked away at that sound. He dropped his gaze to his feet. The ensuing commotion of grief and mourning struck a nerve. That was someone's kid. A twin, a close brother. Unattached hatchlings were wild cards for sure, but such violence wasn't ever easy to witness. Poor Adar. Once this was all said and done, barring any incidents, he was going to wrap her up in a bear hug and not let go for a while.
