The Creature: The Unicorn is one of the most famous magical creatures in the world, being so prevalent that there are still muggles who believe in their existence, despite efforts on the part of wizards to hide their existence. Unicorns are often mistaken for horses, being indistinguishable from them except for the single horn in the middle of their head. As a foul, they are a perfect golden color, their hides turning silver, and then white as they age, with golden hooves. They prefer the presence of women over men, and inhabit forests across the whole of the UK.
The Myth: Unicorns are said to possess many magical qualities, and have long been sought out for their various parts, as each hold magical qualities. Their hair is often used in the making of wands, and their horns are ground for potions ingredients. However, the most mysterious and perhaps disturbing use for a Unicorn is to drink its blood. The Unicorn, being one of the most beautiful and purest creatures in the magical world, is considered almost sacred, and to slay one is a vicious crime. Legend holds that a witch or wizard who is at the brink of death may slay and drink its blood to prolong their life, but because they have committed such an egregious act, their life shall be cursed from the moment it touches their lips. The exact details of the curse are unknown. The most notable occurrence of the slaying and drinking of a unicornโs blood was committed by Professor Quirinus Quirrell on behalf of the Dark Lord Voldemort, who, lacking a body of his own, was sharing Quirrellโs at the time. Shortly after committing the act, Quirrell died, although it is impossible to say whether or not this is the effect of the curse.
Homework: Discuss whether or not you believe in the curse of the blood and what you believe the ill effects of drinking said blood might be.

spaceAmata sat, perched as ever on her desk, and watched as her students came in and took their seats. She waited a moment for them to get situated and to take out their things before beginning the lecture."Afternoon, class. Today we'll be talking about Unicorns, and the Legend associated with their blood."She dimmed the lights and let the same light, creepy music fill the room as the week before. She wondered why fourth year was apparently the year of scary stories, but she wouldn't complain; she rather liked scary stories."According to legend, the Unicorn was born a pure creature, untainted by wickedness and evil. It is a symbol of purity, hope, and innocence. And as with all creatures who are innocent and pure, there are those with dark hearts, who wish to blot out that light forever, and taint the purity with evil. A long time ago, one such being, a wizard whose heart was dark and twisted with evil, came across a Unicorn, drinking from a small pond in the middle of a glen. His tainted soul could not stand to be so near a creature so good, and so, he slayed the Unicorn, and, in an act of perverse victory, drank its blood. The Powers that Be saw this, and were appalled at his actions. As time wore on, the wizard realized that he had stopped aging, and believed himself immortal. But, his longevity was not a blessing, but a curse. For killing and desecrating a creature so pure, the wizard had been cursed to live forever, but only to live a half-life, filled with misery and failure. He wandered the Earth, his every waking moment drenched in suffering, his sleep plagued by horrible visions. From the day that dark wizard had slain the Unicorn, so every other being who who do the same was cursed the same. To drink the blood of a Unicorn is said to welcome the curse onto you."She gave her students a gentle smile. This particular lesson tended to disturb some students, particularly any with a strong liking of animals. But, well, she wouldn't be doing it justice if she didn't try to give it a little horror. She waited a moment so that the lecture could sink in, and then asked,"Anyone have any thoughts? Questions?"She waited patiently. The story she'd told was an old one, lost to the ages, seldom told in the modern day and age. But, her mother being the leading expert on such things, she'd been told the legend from a young age, usually while seated in a dark room, the light of a single candle casting shadows on the walls. Her mother knew how to tell a scary story; Amata could only hope to be as good a storyteller.

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness..."
Theo walked into class, getting prepared to hear another good story. He was glad that he had this class because it was essentially a good ol' story time where he could relax and not have to worry about performing anything. It was...relaxing and he couldn't wait to see what they learned about today and when the teacher went into it, he heard that they were learning about unicorns, which caused him to sigh. Unicorns...really? Even muggles learned about them at one point...but it was usually just a whim where they search it on the internet. He knew about them, but what the teacher said was different from what he knew...so he guessed that he really shouldn't trust muggle sites.
He didn't have any questions at that point and instantly just sat back and relaxed, wondering if Tanya or Echo had anything to say about it. He didn't at the time, but maybe he would think of something sooner or later.
"And some have greatness thrust upon them"

โงTanya walked excitedly into Mythology mainly excited for another tale from Professor Harlowe. She didn't remember the blonde professor being as dramatic last year but she was definitely not complaining. She nearly forgot to take notes so enraptured in the legend of the unicorn and its blood's miracle properties. Hearing about the beautiful creatures almost made her regret not actually taking Care of Magical Creatures but she figured she was already taking such a full load that she didn't need one extra class to be tested over. When she asked if they had one question, an odd thought popped into her head causing her hand to go up into the air. "What about blood willingly given? What sort of properties would it have then?" Just the thought of willingly given unicorn made the potioneer inside of her squeal with glee. โง

"No one really knows. Unicorns are considered to be the purest of creatures, almost sacred. Even for one to give blood willingly, someone would have to cause it the pain required to wound it and draw blood. Given that they are held in such high regard, no one of a pure enough heart for the creature to be willing to give it has ever had a mind to take it, at least as far as we know. It could be speculated, of course, that the curse would not be present, and that it would presumably be capable of doing powerful good, but, as of right now, no one knows."

Lesson 3: The Chamber of Secrets
The Myth: Hogwarts founder Salazar Slytherin was famous for his belief that magical learning should be kept within the realms of magical families, and that any child born to muggle should remain a muggle, regardless of whether or not they showcased any magical talent. When he failed to convince the other founders of this ideal, he decided to create a safeguard, so that whenever the school became overrun with those he deemed unworthy, his lineage could purge the school of their presence. He created the Chamber of Secrets, which was said to be hidden away, so that only the Heir of Slytherin could ever find it, and house a monster which only the heir could control. As no one was ever able to locate the Chamber, it was dismissed as a myth. However, in the 1940โs, there was a series of attacks, leading to the paralysis of several muggle born students, culminating in the death of student Myrtle, who now haunts the girlโs bathroom on the second floor, known better to students as Moaning Myrtle. Then student Rubeus Hagrid was blamed for the attacks and expelled, but remained at the school as gamekeeper. Later, in the 1990โs while Harry Potter attended Hogwarts, the Chamber was opened again, and Hagrid was briefly taken to Azkaban prison. It was later proven that the culprit, in both instances of the Chamber being opened, was none other than Tom Riddle, known later in life as Lord Voldemort. The first time, Riddle was a student in attendance at Hogwarts, and was in fact the one who turned Hagrid in. The second time, he was acting through use of a Horcrux and student Ginny Weasley.

She waited a moment for them to get situated and to take out their things before beginning the lecture."Afternoon, class. Today we'll be talking about the Chamber of Secrets. I know this is a lesson you get multiple times, both from your History of Magic professor and myself, but in this lesson we are more concerned with the legends associated with the Chamber, not the facts."She dimmed the lights and let the same light, creepy music fill the room as the week before. She wondered why fourth year was apparently the year of scary stories, but she wouldn't complain; she rather liked scary stories."Now, you must recall, there was a time when no one knew of the Chamber; it was a rumor, whispered through the halls of Hogwarts, passing from ear to ear, without any real confirmation. The three remaining founders tried for many years to locate the Chamber, but it was never found. So, it was believed to be a myth. As years passed, it became an obscure legend, its story stretched and edited and altered. A few brave souls attempted to locate the Chamber, spent years trying to find it, but to no avail. Then, one day, the message appeared, written in blood; "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened." The blood was barely dry before the first victim was claimed, and suddenly, students were dropping left and right, being found paralyzed by their housemates, their professors. Eventually, a culprit was caught, and expelled, but not before the death of a young student. Fifty years passed in silence, and the monster rumored to live in the Chamber lay dormant. Then, again on the wall, the same message, written in blood. Again, students began to be found paralyzed. This time, though, there was a savior; Harry Potter and his friend Ronald Weasley located and braved the dangers of the Chamber to end the terror. They slew the monster, and the castle was saved... or so the stories say."She gave her students a gentle smile and waited a moment so that the lecture could sink in, and then asked,"Anyone have any thoughts? Questions?"She waited patiently. This lesson differed from her usual ones in that much of what had previously been legend was now mostly confirmed; it also had a happier ending. But, there was always the chance that something could happen... and besides, what good horror story ended with 'and they all lived happily ever after'?

Lesson 3: The Chamber of Secrets
Lesson Closed
OOC:
Homework: Explain your thoughts on the beliefs of Salazar Slytherin and his contemporaries.
Homework for Lesson 3 should be turned into Professor Harlowe's Office before the end of Lesson 2.
The Myth: There was debate for many years as to the exact species of monster which was supposed to reside within the Chamber of Secrets. The reason the possibility of a Basilisk was hardly considered has always seemed baffling, as the symbol of Slytherin house has always been a snake, and Salazar himself was a known Parselmouth. It has been hypothesized that the reason for this oversight was the lack of actual deaths, as there was only ever one victim who died. Basilisks kill by staring into the eyes of their victims, which causes instant death. The idea that so many victims could escape death from such a creature was astounding, and so the possibility was long ago dismissed. When student Rubeus Hagrid was accused of opening the Chamber, his pet Acromantula was named the monster. However, when the Chamber was opened the second time, then student Hermione Granger was able to piece together evidence that proved the creature was a Basilisk. This explained why the creature was able to be controlled by the Heir of Slytherin, as his bloodline has produced many Parselmouths. Harry Potter was able to hear the snake moving through the walls of the school through the pipes, explaining how it was able to escape notice.
Homework: Considering the somewhat abysmal success rate of the Basilisk, do you believe Slytherin's choice of monster was well suited for his purpose? Explain why or why not.

She waited a moment for them to get situated and to take out their things before beginning the lecture."Afternoon, class. Today's lesson ties directly into last class; while before we discussed the Chamber of Secrets, today we will discuss the monster said to lurk within."She dimmed the lights and let the same light, creepy music fill the room as the week before. She wondered why fourth year was apparently the year of scary stories, but she wouldn't complain; she rather liked scary stories."As mentioned last class, there was a time when the Chamber was just a rumor, a legend. As such, stories about what made it so deadly abounded. Some said that it was a curse on the school... somewhat similar to the one that befell us a few short years ago,"she told them, her mouth forming a tight line at the mention of the strange sleep that had infected the school. Grayson had been the first... she didn't like remembering that. Or how she'd behaved upon realizing he was awake... but now was neither the time, nor the place."Other said that within the Chamber lived a monster, a beast that only the heir of Slytherin could control. Theories of what the monster was were too numerous to even begin to discuss, everything discussed from a Quintaped to a Dragon. However, as time went on and the Chamber lay dormant, it, and whatever it held, was forgotten. By the time the foretold heir arrived and began his reign of terror, few even remembered the story at all. When a culprit was named, so too was his monstrous pet, an Acromantula. But, the second opening of the Chamber proved this wrong; instead, when Harry Potter found himself in the Chamber, he faced a Basalisk, a fabled monster. Of course, he bested the creature, and was victorious, killing the beast and rendering the threat of Slytherin's Chamber and Heir null and void."She gave her students a gentle smile and waited a moment so that the lecture could sink in, and then asked,"Anyone have any thoughts? Questions?"She waited patiently. This lesson differed from her usual ones in that much of what had previously been legend was now mostly confirmed; it also had a happier ending. The Creature: The Quintaped is a carnivorous five legged beast, covered in hair, also known as a Hairy MacBoon. They are indigenous to the Isle of Drear. It is classified as extremely dangerous by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. They are believed to have, at one time, been wizards. This cannot be verified, however, as they have resisted all attempts to be Untransfigured. Due to their dangerous nature, the Isle of Drear has been made Unplottable to prevent people from going to the island and being harmed.
The Myth: Long ago, the Isle of Drear was home to two warring clans, the MacBoons and McCliverts. One night, the two family heads engaged in a drunken wizards duel, and McClivert died. In retaliation, the McClivert clan transfigured the entire MacBoon clan into Quintapeds. However, they soon realized that this was an awful idea. The MacBoons were famous for being wholly inept at casting magic. But, as the Quintaped, they became powerful, and quite dangerous to their McClivert rivals. In their attempts to rectify the situation and return them to their natural state, the entire McClivert clan met their doom.
Homework: Discuss whether or not you believe it is possible that the Quintaped is in fact a family of Transfigured wizards.

spaceAmata entered the classroom with a gentle smile, eager to start the new term. She assumed her typical stance, sitting on the edge of her desk, back straight, and looked over the classroom a moment before beginning. "Hello, everyone. I'm Amata Harlowe, and I'll be your Mythology professor. You can call me Professor Harlowe. Now, when you arrive in my class, the first thing you should do is copy down the day's notes from the board. I'll give you a few minutes to do that, and then we'll begin a discussion on the lesson's subject. I'd like you all to know that this lesson operates mostly on a discussion basis. That is, I will give the information that the lesson covers, and then I'll open the floor for discussion. Any student who contributes will earn house points, provided that their contribution is not offensive or rude or disruptive. Please respect your fellow students and their opinions, even if you don't agree with them."
spaceAmata paused, giving them a moment to let that sink in. Not that she expected problems from either of them, but one could never be too sure, after all. After a decent pause, she smiled widely. This was one of her favorite lessons, after all. A few waves of the wand to set the mood. She dimmed the already fairly soft lighting. These lights would continue to dim over the course of her 'lecture,' until the room was lit only by the floating-lily candles placed on the student's desks (an addition she'd made for this exact lesson). The faintest sounds of music could be heard, a soft, simple melody that would grow darker and more discordant as she spoke. When she began, her voice was soft, a campfire voice, for a spooky campfire story."Back in the days when Scotland was still known for being just as likely to fight with itself as outsiders, there were two families, the MacBoons and the McClivert, living on the Isle of Dreer. The families were said to be in a constant war over the land on the Isle, with both sides claiming that the whole of the Isle was their family's by birthright. Records don't go back far enough for us to know which one of them was truly the first on the land, and they were both convinced that their ancestors were the founders. Now, there was a sort of 'safe zone' on the Isle, a village that was home to inhabitants that were not of either family, and in this village there was a pub, which both family heads frequented. One night, they both happened to decide to go for a drink, and they ran into each other at the bar. After hours of drinking and trading insults, one or the other challenged his rival to a duel. This was back when duels were still fought to the death, and to the death it was, with MacBoon winning by taking the life of McClivert. The McClivert clan, in retaliation, is said to have turned the whole MacBoon family into a herd of beasts, known as Quintapeds, or Hairy MacBoons. These creatures were quite powerful, and dangerous, and transfiguring the clan into them proved to have been a mistake. In an attempt to change them back to their original state, the entire McClivert clan was murdered. To this day, the Isle of Dreer is home to the dreaded creatures, and it is expressly forbidden for anyone to go there, for their own safety. The Quintapeds are monstrous creatures, with huge fangs and a hunger for flesh. And few who have seen them in person have lived to tell the tale."She paused dramatically, an eerie smile on her face, the flickering candlelight casting odd shadows on the walls. She watched her students carefully, her eyes playful and curious. She had no idea why she enjoyed treating this lesson as a scary story (well, other than that it traditionally was supposed to be one), but she did. After a moment, she asked,"Any questions?"Her voice was soft, gentle. She wanted very much to know what her students had to say about this particular myth.

Alice walked into mythology leaving Jasper once again in the hall. He had reminded her that he wouldn't be there at the end of the class. Of course it didn't bother her as much as it probably bothered him. She was beginning to wonder if she should talk to him about giving her a bit of space. Pushing the thought aside Alice took a seat near the front and waited for the class to begin.
As class started Alice started copying down the notes before the lesson got underway. Listening as the room got darker and the story got creeper and creeper she sat practically on edge the entire time. The Hufflepuff finally took a breath when the story was over. "Why does it got to be so creepy?" Alice said really just throwing her opinion on the story out there without even realizing it. "Does the island really exist?"she asked curiously. "Or is it just a story?"
