Wherry. Did somebody say wherry!?

Out of the cold of Between, a small firelizard jumped from just outside his nest to directly in front of Shehara. There was no doubting that this particular firelizard was thinking only with his stomache, and for good reason. He was hungry! So very, very, very, hungry. Ravenous. Without even making more than a desperate creel, the blue attached himself to the wherry slice and began ripping into it. If Shehara wasn't careful she might find a finger chomped on, such was the voracity with which the little blue ate. More. He wanted more.

As J'nes watched, three more firelizards hatched and made their way over to some lucky people. He chuckled at the sight of the precious young things tearing into the food with such ferocity. Just like hatchling dragons, except they couldn't ask for food with words.

Down the beach, Hatteth rumbled happily as he picked up J'nes's memory of the day he Impressed. It had been the best day ever. Perhaps some young people would get a hint of that happiness today.

With a wistful smile, J'nes held out a handful of jerky scraps and started to coo encouragingly. At the same time he tried to project feelings of love, diverting his feelings from the memory of Impressing his dragon to try and entice a firelizard to him.

In the face of the rider's sudden (or really, it'd been clear in coming, so not sudden at all) ire, Dolmar simply...blinked. Slowly. Languidly. Utterly unimpressed, if the slow rise of one sharp eyebrow was any sign. It wasn't in his plans to get in a throw down fight today, and in truth if she'd gotten free of her twin and jumped on him, he'd probably have let her land a few shots—fighting back might get him put off the lists for the next hatching, after all—but he'd seen A'rell reaching for her in time, and so he stood firm, not even flinching.

"You might wish to speak to a healer about that, it doesn't sound terribly healthy to have such a small foot. Or is the weyr already aware of your podiatric anomaly? I presume you have your riding straps custom-made?" Out came that razor-edged tongue. Really, he shouldn't...but she was just making it terribly easy. "Yes, look, see? Your brother's right, and half of them are gone already. Now, if you've distracted the three of us enough...?"

In an effort to spot any hatchlings still unclaimed, he put his back half to the pair and thrust the spiderclaw puff forth again. "Here little ones. It's lovely, come try...Come on, come on~"

*head in hands* He is just...just ridiculous. He's gonna stick his foot in it sometime, and just get endless chores.

'Go. Make friends!'

Cinath's gentle prompting over their bond earned him a mental huff from his rider, but Feah obligingly crept a little nearer the growing and varied group, anyway. Really, Cinath, she wasn't being that bad! (This protest earned her a snort from the blue, as he turned one whirling-green eye on her in what could only be an expression of disbelief.)

"Fine, fine, you great pushy brute," she grumbled under her breath, finally daring to draw nearer to the sands proper, tugging a meatroll free of the bag she had brought and offering it in the halfhearted hope of one of the little creatures taking an interest.

"Shards, they're so small..."

She did her best to ignore the shenanigans going on around her - really, if this were a dragon hatching, there would be a little more order! (At least on the part of the human participants. Newly-hatched dragons, on the other hand... ) "I'm half afraid they'll break apart in a strong breeze."

Ashlyn and Demanthra were still trying to get the attention of some of the firelizards, offering their meat they had brought. The younger sister saw people impressing some and her heart sank. Though she tried to keep smiling, not wanting to let on that she really wanted one. She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked over to her sister, whose hand it was.

"Just relax, you never know, maybe you will get a gold one. The right one will want our meat. Remember, I thought the same with dragons until getting Gyafrith,"Ashlyn reminded. Demanthra nodded, looking in the distance where the blue dragon was resting. She hoped to one day have one of her own. Ashlyn also noticed a friend, Z'yden land on the sands and she waved in his direction.

Around her others were impressing and Jynnat was inexplicably jealous. Several greens, and blues, a brown and even a bronze. All she wanted was one. She gave a brief scowl at those already lucky, then turned her attention back to the group. Still others were hatching and leaving the beach without bonding. It was so frustrating!

She glanced over as another rider came up nearby and commented on the size. Jynnat wasn't sure which dragon was hers. "You're dragon wasn't always that size were they?" She grinned for a rider knew just how much a dragon grew. "I think they're a little sturdier than that. Look, you can see some flying already. Newly hatched dragons can't do that."

The young woman felt awkward holding her piece of dried fish. Maybe this just wasn't for her. Jynnat debated giving up and going to see if she could find the rider who brought her, or maybe another who'd be willing to take her home. This was getting ridiculous.

"Perhaps not," Feah said, laughing a little at the girl's comment despite herself. "But he was just as hungry." It felt nice to have Cinath brought up neutrally, instead of in a disparaging manner. And the little fire lizards were visibly steadier than her dear blue had been, if likely due to necessity. They certainly didn't need to Impress, after all.

"Though it does seem as though some are pickier than others, doesn't it?" She added, aware of how awkward and silly both she and this young lady looked, simply standing there with bits of foodstuffs in their hands, hoping one of the little creatures deigned to look their way. "More likely though, they're simply not all that observant, the silly things."

Shahera giggled as she feel backwards from the onslaught of the little firelizard. “You are an ambitious one, aren’t you little one?” She only barely kept from ending up on her back and definitely had a lap lizard who was still viciously but triumphantly tearing into the wherry piece. Shahera entertained the two of them by moving the meat about, making it easier or more difficult to attack.

She was not completely oblivious to the others about for all that she pretended to be. She could hear the cries of hungry firelizards getting fed, and the excited breaths or disappointed sighs that people made to go with that. It was getting crowded though, and while Shahera wouldn’t mind another firelizard sibling to go with her pretty blue boy she thought it best to be polite and move her butt. As the one began calming down and only clutching the food protectively, Shahera gracefully rose to her feet. She realized then that she barely made it into the fray really. A few steps back and she was out of the way completely and able to watch contently while teasing her new little one.

She laughed quietly with the rider. It was easier now that there was someone she could talk to. "They all do seem to be ravenous. Which is good for us!" If they were hungry they could be fed, if they were fed they'd impress! Jynnat wiped sweat from her forehead. "I'm sure it's not as hot as the Hatching Sands, but shards it sure is warm here."

"Mmmmm I think so. Maybe there's not the right compatibility? Or the beach is just too crowded." She knew they were told not to crowd the dragonets as they hatched. But they needed to be close enough to attract their attention. "You'd think with how hungry they are, they would be. Or maybe.... Do you think they don't recognize the things we hold as food?" She glanced at the rider. 'Do you... do you think your dragon mind going fishing for us?" What did firelizards normally eat? Food the elders caught for them. What did older firelizards eat? Fish and small critters they could catch. There was a whole buffet right behind them in the ocean!

On a flight independent of his crewmates' doings, Jacomus hadn't been entirely intent on doing anything. He all but leaned back in Kraketh's saddle, simply enjoying the freedom that being on the back of a dragon afforded one. He hummed and sang some old song, passed down untold generations from one of his parents, and admired the landscape.

There's people and dragons down there.

Shifting where he sat, Jacomus leaned over to look down. "Well if that's not curious..." He reached forward, patting the bronze dragon's strong neck. "Down we go, then! I'm curious what's going on!"

Sweeping his wings a few times, Kraketh tilted and began a slow and easy descent. As he touched down, Jacomus hopped off his neck. The dragon found a spot, settling. At the questioning look, he gave a sniff, It's those little tiny things, I'm fine staying over here.

Jacomus let out a small laugh, smiling at his partner, "Suit yourself, mate, I'm gonna try my luck!" Turning on his heel, he approached the gathered group. From a pouch attached to his side, he pulled a bit of dried meat. It wasn't exactly much of an offering, but it was at least something. One of his sisters had, seemingly, an entire flock of Firelizards, and if there was one thing she always spoke of, it was how hungry hatchlings were. Maybe he'd be lucky.

"What would you know about anomalies, babyface? How many ugly days have you seen in all twelve years of your life?" There was a searing fire behind her words, rattled off in a hard staccato before A'rell finally and bodily inserted himself between the two.

"Hey. Your flits are over there." He grabbed Camriel's piece of hare jerky and pointed it in the firelizards' direction for her. Then with one raised brow that might have been apologetic for his sister's outburst, but might also just have been studying the young man beside him, he said, not unkindly but with a finality that suggested that more biting words would bring forth consequences, "Enough of out you, kid. Don't bait the beast. She bites."

If he Impresses one of these flits, Mine, I will knock him over for you, Kith giggled mirthfully as Camriel hunkered down to try to grab one of the hatchlings' attention.

I'd rather do it myself, the woman replied with a narrowed, sidelong glance at the Candidate. Then she turned her attention back to the firelizards, waving the hare jerky. "Come on buddy, you know you want some."

XDD In her head she's like "Just let you run into me again, I'm gonna make you regret." But it's not like she's helping the situation either

Cal stood at the helm of their ship, humming softly under his breath. A job had taken them up here to the Northern continent, escorting a trading ship on its way up from Western. The job was done and the majority of their riders had already returned back to base camp. Betweening really was an awesomely useful talent. Sadly, they were forced to take the longer route back. Or so he might think, except that the sea was blissfully calm, the sky clear, and the wind, though not exactly warm this late in the season, was pleasantly light while still being more than enough to fill their sails and speed their gentle journey along the northern shore. In worse weather, the skeleton crew that remained might have their work cut out for them on the large ship, but on a day like this, Cal could probably sail it in his sleep.

He was contemplating getting someone to take over for him and doing just that, when a hand tapping his shoulder made him almost jump out of his skin. He turned, frowning at his young shipmate. Given how little Finbar liked it when people snuck up behind him, he sure did it a lot to others.

Shaking his head, he focused back on the young lookout. "Hey.. What is it?" he asked, wondering if something was wrong. In answer, Finbar just pointed across the bay towards a rock cove on the shore. A number of people were gathered around. An unusual number, to be sure, though he couldn't say what for on first glance. Did something happen? Cal squinted. Just as he was about to give up and ask, he saw something move out of the corner of his eye. A distinctly winged movement, but not quite that of a bird. Firelizards!

Cal looked back at Finbar, impressed. The kid's eyesight always amazed him. "You want to stop for a bit?" he asked. Finbar shrugged, which was a yes. He smiled. "Alright. We can take a couple of the smaller boats out. Why don't you grab anyone else who might be interested."

Dropping anchor just off shore, Cal rolled up to the beach in one of the small sailing dinghies his friends used to sail alongside their dragons. They'd be sorry they missed this. Pulling it onto the sand behind him Call took a better look around. This was clearly a prearranged event of some kind. No way this many people would happen upon a hatching clutch at once.. He wondered if it was wrong if then to interrupt.

Usually the shy one, Finbar seemed to have no such reservations today, running off the moment they got there without another word. Well, better to ask forgiveness than permission he supposed, pulling the meatroll he had only half eaten that morning from his pocket. That would work right? Bending his knees, her extended an arm to the nearest hatching.

---

Finbar had been up in the crowsnest enjoying the calm weather when he noticed the commotion on the shore. It only took a second or two for him to realize what was happening. Though he never considered impressing as even an option for him, Finbar had always been somewhat fascinated by dragonkind, and that extended to their smaller cousins as well.

Climbing down the first half of the mast, he dropped softly onto the deck before looking around for their helmsman. He assumed Cal would want to know about this. He would never outright ask to go, but his relief when the other support suggested it was clear. Though firelizards were notorious for living by the sea, Finbar had never seen one so close up before that didn't already belong to someone. As soon as they were close enough, he vaulted the side of the boat and made a beeline for the nearest grouping. A good deal more excited than his friend about this, Finbar had made a stop by the kitchens to pinch a bit of the smoked fish they can caught this morning for provisions, hoping it would be enough to tempt one of the creatures towards him.

A slight ripple of the brows was all the response Dolmar spared for the (in his opinion) ranting woman. In truth, he knew he was not exactly an attractive youth. It was also one of the very least important things that made up who he was, and so her words cut about as deep as a piece of grass could do. Children and teenagers could be cruel, and he'd had his fair share of taunts and insults first in the crafthalls, and more recently the weyr itself. It was, in short, nothing he'd not heard before. Children became adults, great beauties gained wrinkles and lines and age spots. That sort of thing, looking good? It obviously had benefits...but they were ephemeral at best, and that that was the point she'd chosen to attack about him only solidified his somewhat low opinion of her.

A mild shrug, perhaps meaning 'what could I do?' and his back were all he gave to the brownrider, though he did discontinue his jabbing at the woman, instead giving all his attention back to the hatchlings. They were more important in the long run, he supposed, and he'd have forever and a day to poke and prod Western riders if that was how he chose to spend his time. The firelizards would all be claimed or flown away if he took too long not minding them.

MoonRazor
He's just brutally unimpressed with her. He's smart enough to not wanna get in trouble though...I think...so he'll let it drop. Still, would be funny down the line if he took the last bubbly pie or something like that and they kept having these little spats all over the weyr. XD

Z'yden chuckled a little and waved back to Ashlyn and her sister. It was good to see they made it out here and he hoped they had better luck than he seemed to be having. Across the way, he could see the Candidate he'd brought with him and was glad to see she had managed to Impress a little green. From his spot near the clutch, Z'yden plucked at the pastry on the meatroll in hopes that it would entice a flit his way. Meanwhile, he could all but feel Sameth's pouty huff in his head.

I don't know why you want one of those tiny things when you have me. Z'yden chuckled at the Blue's voice. They're cute, Sameth, and they can be helpful. This only earned him another huff from his dragon

Asheryn held in a squeal as a green flit came up to her and began to tear into the meatroll she held. "Aren't you adorable~" she cooed over the hatchling as she ate greedily. "Hmm what should I name you?" Asheryn produced another meatroll in case the little green was still hungry after she devoured the first.

As the little firelizards continued to hatch Fehral could hardly contain himself. It was absolutely one of the finest moments he'd ever experienced... and it made him wonder what being at a Hatching would be like. He'd never watched little dragonets as they took their first steps. Boy! Wouldn't that be a sight to see? The little "wormy" things before him enchanted him, and he could not help but watch them with silent adoration.
