CRACK!!!!!

While everyone's focus was on the Wheel of Fortune's egg, another egg decided it had no time for wobbling. It could feel the excitement of the crowd, could hear all the voices, and it just couldn't wait. The shell practically exploded, with half of it getting thrown one way, and the other half pushed the other, as if the little creature within had bucked out of it. Any standing too near might find themselves hit with egg shell or residual egg goo.

The Fool was here, and she wasn't going to waste any time!

Giving a baby bugle of triumph -- the green's joy at being the first to hatch was obvious.

She pounced over her discarded egg shells, or at least tried to and that's when things ran amuck. She was just hatched, after all, and her little legs weren't quite as stable as she'd thought. Instead, her little legs buckled when she landed, and she found herself falling and tumbling forward. Her wings flailed, trying to grip onto the sand or any nearby Candidates to stop her tumble, and she creeled in surprise.

Oops. That wasn't supposed to happen.

Training said be cautious.

Compassion caused Amila to move for the Fool , risks be fanned. She expected a mauling-- but they were babies who didn't know better.

Amila reached to catch her, and winced at talons, gritting her teeth with a GRIN.

"Easy my friend. Find your partner carefully. They might not have a good home if you fell."

She very nearly jumped out of her skin when another egg -one she hadn't been focusing on - hatched in quite the manner. Ichta's head reeled towards where the little green that had once been inside of an egg that had tried to bowl her over was.

Well, someone was ready for an adventure. Better them than Ichta, right?

Faren's attention darted sideways as she felt the bits of shell pummel her shoulder. She had raised it to guard her face against the shell and took an instinctive step back, grinning. "Why is it not a surprise that you broke first?" She snickered, rolling her eyes.

A green may not have been one of the largest species, but it was big enough for even the experienced candidate to not move quite far enough. She joined the infant in a tumble, spurred on by the back round of its wing as she was pushed away from the rest of the eggs with an 'oof'.

She wanted to sit and watch the baby green for a moment, but quickly realized that she was having a pants-on-fire moment, and hurried to get off the sands and brush off the white dress. "That's-... Hey, be careful!" she called at Amila. "Don't get in between any of the eggs if you ever want to find the one holding your own dragonet!"

Everybody'd been paying attention to one egg, only for another to explosively hatch. Jacomus bit his gloved hand, trying to stifle a laugh as he remembered Kraketh's hatching. The bronze had shoved several candidates over that had been cloistered near the front before bowling the nearly-grown teenager over to eagerly and rather unquestionably Impress upon him. He wondered, would one of these young dragons do the same?

His eyes flicked across the candidates, toward Amila. A bold girl, he noted - He hoped she Impressed well.

Ashlyn had fallen asleep that morning, standing up near her baby's sleeping area. Luckily, her son was in his bed, cause she was startled awake when her blue dragon sent her a wake up call. She nearly jumped out of her skin, when she heard the humming and realization hit the young woman very quickly. It meant the current clutch was hatching and she needed to get down to the sands immediately. She hurriedly got into her blue tunic and made her hair as straight as she could. She ran over to kiss her weyrmate, having Gyafrith tell his green where they were going, before scrambling over to her awaiting blue. Once she was securely on his back, she had him race to the hatching grounds as quickly as he could.

Patience, Ashlyn mine. We will not miss it, I know there is many reasons you need to be there,Gyafrith soothed his rider. She nodded her head as he finally made it to the grounds and let her off near the entrance. She scurried inside after the throng of people, but made for the cavern where V'mel and the rest of the team would be. Gyafrith made it up to the ledge, making sure to let Ashlyn know anything she might miss.

"Ready to be of service, sir,"she spoke to V'mel. She could only hope this would be the hatching her sister would finally impress.

Demanthra had managed to get to sleep, even if she was really excited about the hatching. After the touching they had, she was eager to see what each of the eggs had inside of them. So when the hum of the dragons combined with the candidatemaster's brown speaking into her mind happened, the girl woke pretty quickly. She hurried out of bed, noticing Cami was not in her bed, was probably up early working on her hunting skills. She got into her white candidate robes, her sandals, and made herself as presentable as she could. Once she was ready, she hurried out to where the other candidates would be waiting. She had listened to Gr'del's speech as she had before, before following the others inside. As usual, she made sure to bow to the parent dragons and their riders, before looking for her friends. Seeing Caderyn, Cami, and Luiciand, she made her way over to them.

She was just about to say hello when she saw one of the eggs moving and noticed it was the pretty blue one. She remembered her conversation with the wheel of fortune egg, it sure seemed to be an upbeat one. As she was focused on that one, another one made a grand entrance, the fool egg. She hadn't gotten to that one, but it definitely seemed it couldn't wait. Out popped out a green, who tried to move, but overestimated its ability to move. One of the girls, her name was Amila, if she remembered right, went to help and she held her breath.

She gasped a little in surprise when the Fool egg exploded and a bugling baby green entered the world with a flare. Oh, she was so cute! So happy! So...clumsy. Oh, dear. Reflexively, she set one foot behind her, ready to move if necessary, but another Candidate had another idea entirely. Even as one girl was hit and tumbled - but stood, that was a good sign - another girl went towards the flailing dragonet, doing exactly the opposite of what they were supposed to.

Nadry winced, but couldn't bring herself to look away or shut her eyes. Oh, please let no one learn any lessons the hard way today.

Bekah had been up before sunrise, part of her Healer training demanded odd sleeping patterns and long hours, preparing her for the time, someday, when she would have to manage by herself in any given emergency. She was just finishing wrapping up bandages that had been freshly washed when the humming began, it started off as just a vibrating feeling in her gut, until it built and built until it was all she could hear.

"Senior Apprentices, ready, today you get to attend a Hatching, grab a supply bag prepared for you on and get yourselves down to the Healer Tables on the Sands"

The Masters voice rang out and something in Bekah's gut flip-flopped and seemed to want to force its way out of her throat. She forced the feeling down, her stomach still feeling like there were tunnel snakes writhing around in it, she grabbed her pack before hurrying, carefully, down to the Sands, finding the Healer tables quickly, before the candidates filed out. She always did wonder at the choice of white robes when often candidates would get clawed, if not mauled. She knew how hard it was to wash blood from white fabric.

She watched as an egg rocked, struggling to hatch but was surprised when a completely different egg suddenly hatched, she loved watching Hatchings but had only managed to attend one once after starting her training. She watched as the green struggled to walk, her stomach lurching as the dragonet grabbed at candidates near her, trying to help herself. A hand on her shoulder stopped her from running forward, she stopped, of course, she knew the rules so she waited, Apprentices stayed at the tables, only Senior journeymen and Masters went out among the candidates and dragons to fetch those that needed fetching. She hoped it wouldn't happen today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rokar woke slowly, wondering what it was that disturbed his sleep. It wasn't until he heard Siriath's voice in his head that he realises why. He sighed but took a deep breath, today was hopefully the day. He hurried along with the other boys in the barracks, donning the white robe and filing out with the other candidates.
He listened carefully to Gr'del and bowed to Uridith and Takarath, as well as their riders. He took another deep, careful breath and stepped out onto the Sands, taking his place among the other candidates. For the moment, while eggs were just rocking, he kept towards the middle, not too close to the eggs.
When the Fool egg practically exploded, he ducked instinctively, not wanting to be slashed by flying shards. A green .... A clumsy one at that, he thought as he tried to recall the touching, oh! Shaff! She was stumbling and grabbing out, he was thankful he wasn't near but a stray flicker of concern for his fellow candidates moved across his mind, however he kept his place for now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mallan was in the kitchens, he was always awake before sunrise, usually helping prepare breakfasts when not doing candidate duties. At that moment he was kneading bread, the rythym distracting him. He didn't even hear or feel the humming until Siriath spoke. "OH NO!" he called out, startling the old cook who indulged him, "I have to go! The eggs .... The dragon eggs!!" He dropped everything and raced away, "shells, shells, shells, I'm gonna be late!!!" True enough, by the time he got to the barracks, no one was there, he could almost cry, today of ALL days ....

Quickly donning his white robe he ran down to the Sands, breathing hard as he arrived, he quickly bowed to the parent dragons ... No! An egg hatched just as he got towards them, He glanced towards Gr'del, knowing that should he not Impress, he was in trouble. He hurried and took his place, flinching as the newly hatched green grabbed out at the nearest Candidates, without even thinking of himself, he moved forwards, pulling any fallen candidates away from the immediate danger zone

A small purple egg that had been waiting politely for its turn took its sister's arrival as its cue. It began to rock in place, the movement growing in frequency and urgency by the moment. The Judgement Egg was ready to hatch! It seemed to shiver as the hatchling within worked to free itself. Wobble, wobble. Shake.

PostPosted: Sat Jun 24, 2017 4:38 am
Another egg wobbled now, the little purple one. Shards, she wished she'd been able to touch more eggs! She felt like she knew nothing about most of them, save from hearing little bits here and there from the other Candidates, but some were more talked-about than others. The largest had been getting the most attention, the gold and the striped and, of course, the worrisome red egg. Nadry glanced that way, both morbidly curious and dreading the moment that one would hatch. But, always, her eyes went back to her own obsession. Others could fawn over the Devil if they wished, she had other ambitions.

Hah. Since when had she had ambitions? It was new and strange and painful, to hope. Also, maybe rude to fixate on an egg that was thus far still while two others wiggled and one dragonet was out and about. She chastised herself for focusing so hard elsewhere and turned her attention back to the activity for now.

As Candidates poured into the sands, Nebbi squeezed Vitre's hand shaking his arm excitedly. "Ah! It's starting." she squealed, just as Vitre was asking her which one would hatch first.

"Hmmm." Nebbi looked down at he sands. A bronze for luck, she'd heard that too. Vitre was an optimist, but Nebbi liked being right. She around at the eggs. There was only going to be so many bronzes. "A bronze, or maybe.. Oh!" she stopped with a short gasp as one of the eggs began to violently shake.

"Oh!" she cried, pushing on Vitre's shoulder again. "No fair, I was going to say green too!"

Strawberri Stardust

"Yes indeed!" Rissa replied with a smile. She did love hatchings. They were so exciting. And good for the Weyr too. Soon enough, the eggs were shaking and Rissa gently shook her sister's shoulder. "Tia. Wake up, it's starting." she said. The girl sat up and rubbed her eyes, blinking down at the sands just as the Wheel of Fortune egg began to shake. "Oh!" she said, exctied enough by the eggs that it took her a moment to realize someone else was sitting next to her. "Ristia!" she said, happily, when she did spot the woman. She beamed widely, if still a little dozy from sleep. "Good morning!"

But almost as soon as the hatching started there was drama. As just after the the oohs of the delight at the precious green, there were 'ah!'s of surprise as she started to stumble. "Oh no!" Tia cried, he voice already starting to crack. "I hope it's okay."

Cami spotted Chayrel waving and lifted a hand in return. She started to move towards, for no real reason than because she felt somehow safer standing near by people she knew, but stopped when she heard Caderyn's voice. "Hello." she replied, and inclined her head towards Luciand as well. What were they talking about? Oh, who would impress? Before she could add anything however (not that she really had anything to add), an egg split open and the hatching was begun in earnest. Cami was not at all suprised to see that egg go first, remember its last words before the hatching ended, when the little yellow egg had nearly cracked. She was just glad it managed to wait until now. Too absorbed in the hatching, she didn't notice for several moments that her roomate had come up beside them. "Oh, Demanthra." she said, once she turned again and noticed her. "Hello."

-_Wish of Tevarae_-

"That's great." Ened said, lifting her thumbs in support. She was only ever half sure any of the things she made would even work. Ened too, stopped their conversation once the eggs started shaking. The Wheel of Fortune scrambling around, while the Fool burst open. Her eyes glided back to the small pink egg instead. The one with a secret. Today, perhaps, they'd find out what that was.

~~~
Attention fully on the eggs now that the hatching was starting, Riagan was distracted from the newly hatched green once a small purple egg started shaking. That was the one he most wanted to see. His ally. He thought,
even if that was silly. Chances are it would be someone else's lifemate, and maybe that person or that grown dragon wouldn't know or like him at all. Still, he couldn't help but feel like he'd want to make friends with them, if he could. He had so enjoyed talking to that egg.
When the humming began, Lenix shot up from his cot, guessing instantly what the sound meant. It was time. He shucked off his sleepwear and struggled to get into his white robe. It was awfully tight around his muscular thighs, but it would do. He’d only have to wear it a few times, maybe even just once. He heard the voice of brown Siriath in his mind and quite suddenly remembered that he had roommates, all of whom were still fast asleep.
--------
Karone awoke to a sharp punch in the shoulder. Startled, he swung a reply but didn’t hit anything. He sat up, seeing Lenix hustle away to wake their other two roommates and hearing the last words of a dragon inside his head. He moved quickly, yet without rushing, to get his robe on. Stay calm. Patience. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen.
He and Len joined the clusters of candidates on the sands, staying together as they moved to a position slightly to one side of the clutch, where they would be close enough to help someone if needed but have plenty of space to avoid flailing dragonets. They bowed to the resident king and queen and settled in to wait, shifting back and forth on their sand-burned feet. Karone spotted Timor, the candidate he’d “rescued” from Uridith at the end of the Touching, and waved. “Good luck to you,” he called, exaggerating the words a little so that Timor could read his lips if he was unable to hear him over all the humming and noise.
The hatch began with several wobbly eggs – then a green appeared! She tried to jump, stumbled, and was caught by a girl, scratching her up pretty good. Would she Impress?
DruidTigeress
Because I didn’t get to respond to your post in the touching before hatch day, so sorry! I’m assuming they might have had a short conversation afterward to make sure everyone was okay?
Cahlusi
Cahlusi tore his eyes off the egg's just long enough to give his sister a wink and a grin. "You're a star, darling. I know you'll charm these cuties, and if nothing else, some of the viewers. I know that's what I'm hoping for myself, at least." He was relieved that his sister was here, and that they could stand together. He didn't necessarily want Alumet to go far, simply because he knew how the baby dragons might behave. They'd both stood for hatchings before, but that didn't mean there wasn't still a danger. "I don't think I've met a dragonet yet that has an eye for fashion. But why not give the viewers a nice show while we're here, eh?" Vain creature that he was.
The green that suddenly exploded and tumbled, albeit awkwardly, out of her shell did surprise the man. Still, his eyes couldn't help but look fondly over the flailing creature -- that had been the egg that had rolled when the Empress egg had been so upset. "It's not bad at all. I think there'd be something wrong with us if we weren't," he added, the closest he he'd come to actually confessing his fears. For as confident as he liked to appear, deep down, the boy was worried. It wasn't easy facing the judgment of dragonets, and the pain of rejection was never easy to swallow.
~ ~ ~ ~
Gr'del
Gr'del as surprised by his assistants touch, but appreciative. While being a Candidatemaster or assistant wasn't necessarily always a prestigious role, it was important all the same. They had kids on the Sand that were barely babes, and others that he'd spent over a decade with. While he didn't want to admit his attachment, there was a paternal streak within the rider that stretched toward all the Candidates. This was their day, but there was so much that could go wrong.
"You may have faith, but I lost that a long time ago," he added, brows knitting as he saw Amila suddenly become the hand-hold of a green. While he had expected the girl to move back after initially getting hit, he almost groaned as she walked towards the green. Had she Impressed or been asked to do so? It didn't look like it was Impression.
He tensed, and almost took a step forward from where he stood on the sidelines. Part of their jobs were to pull fallen Candidates off the Sands, help those who couldn't help themselves. He did approve of Mallan helping others, though worried the green might turn aggressive all the same. Unimpressed dragonets were very unstable!
"You can hope for both of us, eh?"
H'sad
H'sad knew that Hatchings were always a bittersweet moment for Dristan, but it was something that simply couldn't be helped. For H'sad, they were nothing but a living memory of when his gorgeous Cinonth had picked him out of the crowd above all else. His blue mentally snuggled closer to his chosen, but did send a few waves of gentle encouragement and love to Dristan, too. He had grown up with Dristan as well, as H'sad had been quite involved with the other man by the time he'd Impressed.
"It's all right, love," he assured, settling in the tiers and wrapping an arm lovingly around the others shoulders. They had a good seat -- not too far up, but not too close to the Sands, either. Maybe he'd picked the spot selfishly -- he didn't want Dristan to have to jump to the Sands on a moment's notice. There were other dragonhealers assigned to the Hatching. Not everyone needed to be on deck yet and he hoped it stayed that way.
When the green dragon tumbled haphazardly out of her shell, his grip on Dristan tightened. "Such a darling," he cooed, little worried about the girl or any Candidates that got in the babies way. Cinonth had bowled over his share of Candidates back in the day, and had all but pounced on H'sad in his sweet enthusiasm. To him, unless it was a vicious attack or brutal mauling, the rest all seemed harmless.
~~~~
Chayrel
Chayrel was comforted by Fehral's presence and ghost-of-a-touch, even if he wouldn't admit it. Especially when one of the eggs did explode. It was too far away to cause any damage, but his stomach gave a lurch. Here they went. The baby was, quite frankly, adorable... but he couldn't help but feel his muscles already tense. "Get outta the way, ijit," he half muttered beneath his breath. He might be small and scrapy, but he wasn't going to just walk right into a flailing dragonet. Not unless they genuinely needed it.

~~~
Alusia
Alusia had managed to get the Hatching off from work. The extra-money would have been nice, but her children were standing, and she didn't want to miss it. Besides, she had her other daughter to sit with and keep her company. Little Lusialu would be turning fourteen in two sevendays, and she knew her daughter was thinking of asking for her right to stand. Ah, it wouldn't be long before all three of her children would be moved into the Candidate Barracks.
But she didn't want to think about that right now. No.
Instead, the blond haired woman had donned her best. Her hair was braided and styled in an updo -- she knew how hot the Hatching Sands could be, and the festivities that happened after. She wore a purple dress that cut her figure well, silver bangles, and silver and purple stoned earrings and necklaces. Hatching's were more sweet than bitter now that her children were there to stand; she had been a Candidate once, and though she never found a partner her own, she still hoped for her children.
Maybe this time.
Maybe one of them would be more successful than she.
Carrying herself with all the carriage of a Lady Holder, Alusia walked in with her daughter, and found a seat next to someone. Settling in with her daughter, Alusia offered their seatmates a smile. The Hatching Sands were too crowded for people to be able to spread out, so squeezing everyone in meant you got awfully friendly with your neighbors. "Hope you don't mind getting cozy."
((If anyone wants to write with Alusia, feel free to have her settle beside them to watch.))
With a great trumpet of triumph, the little purple egg split clean in half. Well. It probably thought it was great, anyway. If the trumpet had babyish overtones that could not be helped. The blue dragon who had just cleaved his egg was, after all, a baby. Shaking himself free of the clinging egg goop, he began to make his way onto the sands. Where was his friend? His special friend. The one who he had known in the egg? When it was not immediately obvious where he should go, he sat back on his haunches, giving a creel of confusion. There were so many! But where was his someone? His eyes began to whirl a worried yellow-orange, and he peeped, waiting... waiting for something. Someone?
