Joshua answered without looked at Katalina. His sight was focused on the fish surrounding them. "They're called rabbitfish. They're called that because they are small and shy like the rabbit." He glanced at Katalina. 'She wouldn't know what a rabbit is, would she?' He realized. Looking back at the fish, he explained. "A rabbit is a land based animal. It's very shy and runs very fast at any sign of danger."

Katalina smiled slightly. "I know what they are," she said lightly, extending her fingers towards one of the smaller fish. "I've seen a couple of them running through the forest when I sit on the rocks. Long ears, right? Fuzzy? Maybe I'm thinking of something else," she added hesitantly, unsure of herself.

Joshua glanced at Katalina. 'I wonder how often she comes above water. How much does she know of the land world?' He didn't want to think of it was 'his' world or as the 'humans' world. Both sounded wrong. "Yeah, you got it. That's what a rabbit is." He smiled to reassure her that she had it right. He looked back to the fish. "Do you speak to them? Or were they just drawn by your presence?"

Katalina blinked a couple of times. "The rabbits? Oh, you mean the fish. Well, neither, really. They just knew I was like them. They were in the coral anyway, so they came to play with me." She gently cupped her hands around one of the smaller fish, watching it sink to the bottom of the bowl her hands made before moving her hands and letting it swim through her fingers again. "They like me. They like you, too."

"That's interesting. Sort of a kinship feeling then." Joshua studied the fish swimming around. He reached out and touched another fish. This one didn't twitch away as the last had. Instead, it seemed to curl around his hand. It swam through his fingers and then moved on, another bright spot in the swirl. "Do they like me? I've never been able to get close to them before. I thought you were the reason they stayed when I came."

Katalina shrugged. "I suppose so," she replied honestly. "And they like you...at least they probably do. They came to see me. Then you came, and they stayed at first because I was here to protect them. But when you were nice to them and didn't chase them around, they started to like you," she explained carefully, wondering if she was making herself clear.
Hoping he understood her, she shrugged. "They're friendly if you approach them right...well, maybe you have to have a mermaid with you if you're human."

"Ah." Joshua smiled, understanding now. "That makes sense, I suppose." He nodded as he spoke. "I can see how your presence would help them feel safe." Joshua continued playing with the fish. A soft smile lit his face. He drew his fingers down the side of a nearby fish. When it curled around his hand, he cupped his hands together, imitating what he'd seen Katalina do. As with Katalina's fish had, it sunk in his hand, then took off when he opened his fingers.

Katalina's head snapped up and the fish took off at the sound of a motor. "That's a boat," she whispered. "That's the boat, maybe. Come on, come on!" She swam upwards towards the surface, where a dark shadow was beginning to blot out the sun.

Joshua followed Katalina. He couldn't hear the boat right away but as they drew closer he could. "Be careful!" He called out to the mermaid. He really did not want to get his first mermaid friend killed. To try and prevent that particular consequence, Joshua kicked hard until he was level with her. They were almost at the surface.

Katalina flipped her hand at him, as much as if to say, But of course. She stopped abruptly, putting an arm out to stop Joshua. She knew from experience that the propeller blades went further down than one might expect. And they really hurt. "Those are sharp," she whispered, pointing to the blades. "Watch them." She hovered just below the boat, listening to the rough voices and harsh language of those on board. "What are they saying?" she asked Joshua, unable to comprehend the words.

Joshua looked gratefully at Katalina. As much as he didn't want her hurt, neither dd he want to be hurt. He listened closely, the propellers and water muffling some of the noise. "I think...." He frowned, displeasure in his voice, "It sounds like they don't want to be caught." He paused, listening to more of the voices. "They don't want.....anyone to find them....FISHING!" He twitched as he realized what they were saying. "Move!! They're getting the nets ready to throw over!" Joshua turned and kicked away from the ship. 'I wonder if this is how the fish feel when they see the nets coming.' Now a checkered shadow could be seen on the surface.

Another boat could be heard approaching the spot where the people were fishing. A girl sat near the front. "Hey what are those people doing over there?"she asked turning to glance at the younger boy who was steering. "It looks like they are fishing....."the boy said frowning.

Safe from the nets, Joshua looked around. He groaned as the other ship came into view. "Not another one!" Joshua turned back to watch the nets float down through the water. He kept an eye on Katalina, making sure she didn't get caught. 'When it's low enough I can shred it.' He though fingering his belt knife. 'Or!' He thought suddenly. 'I can get it tangled in their own propellers. That might work better than seaweed.' He mulled these ideas over in his head. One thing was certain: that net was not staying.
