Where Amortentia's eyes had been grey, they went purely white. The infant let out a keen of terrible pain and anguish. ... Was she so dreadful, so useless, that she ought to... to die? So had been the thoughts of one of the boys. Shivering, trembling in place, the dragonet's bright colors greyed, the blackness of between beckoning. Was she...

Worthless?

Rokar couldn't stand it anymore, that poor green, his heart felt ripped in two ... he wanted to do as he was told but something was causing Amortentia green to be really distressed, he took a couple of steps forwards, pleading mentally at her not to go Between, to go find hers, she would be SAFE, and so very happy once she found Hers, it would be all better, Hers would protect her. He took another step forwards, not close to the hatchling but enough that there was a fairly big gap behind him, between him and the other candidates "please dont" he whispered, seeing her colours dull... he wouldn't bear it if she Betweened,

As quickly as the smiles had come to Helaku, they vanished as the color drained from his face. The white eyes, the pained keen, the paling hide...Amortentia had reached the brink, and unless she found hers to bring her back from it...he found himself terrified for her.

Please stay, please, he found himself mentally pleading towards the little green. You are needed. You are wanted. Someone here is just waiting to meet you, to be with you always. They are here, and they need you. "Please come find them. Please."

He wasn't even aware that he'd murmured that last out loud, his fists clenched at his sides. He didn't know if his thoughts alone could hold her here, but he had to try. The other dragonets were momentarily forgotten as he fiercely, desperately hoped that those here could keep this sweet girl from leaving them. A tear trickled down his face, unheeded.

So many things were happening! More Impressions were taking place all around the sands, more eggs were hatching and showing new colors and faces, and yet still, amid it all, one little green was having a horrible time. Shar's eyes remained on Amortentia, watching as the dragon shifted a bit, and when the once beautiful purple eyes turned pure white and her green dulled, she had had enough. The noise drew Shar forward a few steps, her hand out to indicate Riz should stay back to keep those behind him safe in case anything bad did happen. She had to do something.

"Little green," she called softly after pausing, not wanting to draw too close to the clutches. She crouched down a bit, making herself less of a potential threat, mindful of drawing the ire of the siblings or the parents of the distressed dragon.

Come closer to us, precious thing. I don't know who is thinking things awful enough for you to feel so badly, but I'll personally see to it that they're punished for their idiocy. Yours is out here somewhere and to them you mean more than the world. If you want to point out who is upsetting you so I'll take care of them so you can find yours. If this baby jumped between Shar knew everything would crumble around them and she'd probably lose her Candidate status for tackling whoever was responsible for the loss of the dragon. She didn't care, though. One dragon was more valuable to Pern than she could ever be and she'd gladly hand in her eligibility if it meant keeping the green.

Meztli
Ohhh fardles. The keening tone of the green shoo Meztli right out of their reverie, leaving them cringing, wincing. It was pure agony, and they swore aloud at the sound of it. "Shards that...it's awful!" What kind of heart couldn't ache for such pain coming from an infant? Unable to resist, they took a half step forward, hand lifting as if to reach out. "Someone's hers, right? For Faranth's sake, help her...!"

Finnisa
From smiring at Iathe to wide-eyed and fearful. What...had been that sound? Her eyes fixed on the paling green, eyes gone white, and sucked a breath. She'd never seen a hatchling between, of course, but had heard...she'd been a candidate turns now, and knew...this...was bad. Her heart instantly leapt from placid to frantic. "Please no, please don't...!" The pain of creatures had always been horrible on her heart, and so it was now. Had the green's chosen one...rejected her? Could the green make another choice, if so? The poor love, why, she'd have gladly been chosen by the pretty thing...!

Zelaya
At the wretched sound they had to look away, eyes cast down, chin tucked to heaving chest. They didn't want to see it, if that was what was about to happen. A lance of pained anger nestled in their heart—they had been trained, shard it all! Trained how to act and think! And now, now someone had hurt a hatchling, might lose the Weyr a needed, beloved hatchling! That was someone's partner, and a careless thought might have killed her! With their upper teeth gripping at their lower lip, they fought to muffle the anger in their heart, pushing forth an almost begging rush of affection and warmth. Shh, shh, it was going to be fine! Just please, don't do that...!

Theo
High, high above the drama in the stands, Theo's flurrying hand stilled as a gut-wrenching sound filtered up through the murmur of the crowd. It tugged at his heart, and left tears pricking the corners of his eyes from seemingly nowhere. He'd never seen a betweened babe before. Had heard of them, as had anyone, but it hadn't registered at first that this might be that very dreaded thing. "What...Sylfie, what's...?"

HAVELI

Haveli watched the whole affair of the graying (literally, figuratively) green dragon with a distant touch. Her thoughts were entirely neutral in that she didn't wish death or life, but merely she observed. Surely someone would be foolish enough to rush out in great alarm, wrapping their arms about the dying beast as though their love would be what saved her. Surely there was some amazing hero among all the candidates gathered around, whom she no doubt were all attempting to send the baby the best thoughts possible.

Not her, not at all. Nothing negative, nothing positive, for she'd already learned her lesson via the tiny gold who'd brought about the rumble of her mother. What would the death of a child do? Would the dragon storm the sands, sweeping away her children and refusing to allow further Impression? How angry would the Candidatemasters be, knowing they gave that grand speech so many times only to have it tossed back in their faces with reckless glee? People were stupid to come on to the sands as they were, and that part of it all was somewhat enjoyable. Watching people think themselves innocent while they murdered a baby. Hadn't something like this occurred at Western not too long ago? My my, how the trash travels.

But now what to do? Focus on the other dragonets who still gathered like porcines before slop, taking their sweet time while their stomachs and instincts screamed for relief? Maybe the death of their sibling would promote some action, though not always good, and Haveli was also okay with that. This stagnant air on top of burning sands was stifling.

Calla -- HR Candidate

Another Impression, more dragonets bursting -- the bubble of anticipation swelled in Calla, but her solace was her focus. Keep sending out those positive images (she was more of a thinker, not a vocalizer, it seemed). And then, in the clutch nearest to her, the Amortentia dragonet who had struggled, then seemed to rebound, took on a shade that made Calla's stomach drop.

Of course, they had been told of the worst things that could happen. Those who had seen it happen before had described it. They had been taught to be careful, to avoid the sort of thing that could cause this. What bothered Calla most was that no one had made a terrible misstep to scare the thing physically. No one was running around the Sands, or trying to get close. So it had to be internal, which made it impossible for her to know who had caused it.

Or was it just that this poor thing was gazing out on a sea of candidates that did not contain Hers? Calla knew what loss was. She didn't want to experience it tonight, or any night, and she wanted better for this dragonet, and all of them, then that empty nothingness.

A Candidate was approaching the dragonet. Shards, that didn't seem like a good idea either. Their only hope would be the negativity to stop, and the positivity to flow into those cracks and bring her back. Calla glanced briefly to the royal parents, hoping they may be able to intervene. And then she tried to super-soaker blast some good vibes, digging deep and drawing up images of all the riders she saw on a daily basis with their bonded, living the lives they were meant to. Being bonded was better than between; it had to be. It was better for the dragonet, for the Candidates, for the Weyr, for all of Pern, for shards sake.

Colors of the Wind froze midway through returning her brother's attention-directing, eyes blanching yellow at Amortentia's keen of despair. Without hesitation she ducked around Be Our Guest, a trill of worry rising to a near-trumpet as she crossed the gap between clutches, then melted into croons of reassurance. The green slowed as she neared Amortentia and Crucio, creeling and whistling, eyes whirling between yellow and purple (with the briefest flash of red as she glanced over her shoulder at the candidates).

Kinyegele

Kinye's heart tried to sink in her chest but she pulled it up and out, no matter how her lower lip quivered with fear. How much love would everybody pour into this little green and would it - It would! It would matter! Still, her hands shook, and it took all of the emotional strength in her body to pull all of the love and desire for the little green to hold on to push her way.

Amila

Forget her own safety.

Amila's heart sank seeing the beautiful, wonderful, PERFECTLY BEAUTIFUL baby gray, white, and... Someone had hurt her and she was so upset now Amila just couldnm't let herself linger back and cry -- ythat baby deserved to find Hers, to know she was LOVED and WANTED by the majority, even if a dumb, worthless Candidate was the one to say it, because the baby was innocent. Pure. Wonderful.

Shemoved for Amortentia rapidly, ignoring her own sense wearning one of the dragonets might injure her.

Nobody cared. Amortentia needed someone to comfort.

She moved, then turned to the crowd, giving the other candidates a scathing look she never wore -- how could they scare this innocent soul so?! A baby!

"Stoip SCARING her you... You shard-eating monsters!" She snapped, and then knelt, looking to Amortentia. She wanted to hug her, but for the front of the crowd to risk bites, clawing, and the like for being up front? Even a foot ahead? Fine.

She coulsn't bear seeing that sweet green suffer so.

"Precious one, little one, sweet, beautiful, baby girl, it's going to be okay. Yours is in those people. I know Yours is. You deserve to be happy. Don't be scared. Would you like a hug and someone to walk with you while you look?"

Another scathing look, the girl only sparing Ielin.l The baby needed a fierce, happy face -- and Amila... Might be able to be brave and happy to save a baby, maybe.

Akaris
Akaris had taken to focusing on Fianth's clutch, both finding the hatchlings from it less intimidating in general, and less overwhelming as far as number of dragonets to keep track of; half-ignoring it might not make it go away, but it was a passable coping mechanism for the girl, who was clinging to every resource available to keep her anxieties for overwhelming her. Because she knew full well how very important it was not to think troubling things. With her attention mostly on those dragonets, particularly Let It Go and now Be Our Guest, she had failed to notice Amortentia's initial distress over in Rhianth's clutch...

Until she heard that keen, like icy fingers around her heart, and dared to glance to see the source. Without any telepathy of her own, she had no idea the cause, but whatever it was, it was heartbreaking. Oh, baby, what's wrong? What do you need? Yours is here, aren't they? If you're hurting, I'm sure they can fix it. I'm sure they'd do anything for you!

She bit her lip, and pulled at Rylyrr's arm. "Please...please don't tell me she's going to... They'll stop her, right? Won't they?"

Sylfie
In truth, Sylfie had only been half paying attention to the Hatching at best, much more focused on her company in the Stands than the dragonets down below, but the keening wrenched her attention away from Theo and onto the hatchlings. She clutched reflexively at Regory, expression twisting in concern. "She's...I don't know. Maybe Hers isn't here, or someone did something..."

But why? Why would anyone hurt a baby so terribly? Or worse, maybe Hers was there somewhere, and didn't want her. Oh, Faranth. And a few figures moved towards the distressed hatchling, some closer or faster than others... "Oh, I...I don't if that's a good idea..." she murmurred, leaning forward in dreadful suspense.

There was so much going on now that for a moment, Be Our Guest's eyes flashed yellow, and then white, all of his gusto seemingly misplaced in the moment. The brown gave a creel after Colors of the Wind, before a different thought pulled him away - and fairly quickly - towards the candidates.

He turned from the scene of so much concern, knowing that his best duty was to bring some cheer to someone else nearby. There were so, so many glum faces, and there was only one way to lift any of them right now, no sweet trills or nudges of affection would wipe some of those faces. But someone over here thought he would be just fine.

There they were, off holding hands with another, a handsome man.....and Akaris. The brown paused, offering the woman a warm peep and a nudge of his head against her hand. But....

Maybe..a certain someone she knew...?

He stepped back, and looked now to Rylyrr. Yes, a handsome man indeed. In fact......rainbows easily whirled into those yellow eyes as the brown looked at him. This show is far too sad to put on, my Rylyrr. Don't you agree? Can't we write a better ending and make everybody far happier together? You and your Andelath?

Vodex

One of the pink adorable eggs that he had meet during the touching had hatched into a cute green and with no doubt demanded love and attention from everyone in the audience. The pink haired candidate grinned as he watched her hoping that the luckiest color would find their partner soon. That was until its eyes grew white and she began to shiver.
No, no, no, no what is wrong! You are one if the best dragonets here! I love you! Others do too!

Karone
The anxious green’s eyes had gone white. There was still someone out there who was ignoring everything they’d been taught. His sharp eyes flashed over the other candidates within view, wishing he could tell who it was. He wanted nothing to do with them, whoever they were. Ungrateful. Unworthy. A shout died unsounded in his throat as a girl sprinted for the hysterical green, too fast to be stopped. Such a sudden movement could easily frighten the infant right between, or prompt her to defend herself. It would most certainly be ugly, but he was unable to look away.

With two different hands gripping his, Riz was in no position at all to follow Shar closer to the white eyed green that was so clearly in need of something. Whoever it had been that caused that sort of reaction, in his mind they were a monster, she was just a baby after all. So all he could do was grit his teeth and tense up just a bit tighter, every muscle in his body tightly on edge as if he were wound up and ready to move at any moment. Unconsciously he pulled Cavera and Zamistia a little closer to him, but also a bit behind him so that his arms were covering them, no matter how skinny he was.

At least Nalacko was back there already. But he had no words of reassurance for them, no words at all really as he watched carefully the Impressions happening around them and still the white eyed green so near her red eyed siblings.

Don't go, stay and find your partner. They have to be here. Rizdax thought quietly, pain filling his chest at the thought of a baby going between.
