Akila nodded, and went to the house, the couple shortly behind her. Silent.
Inside, the girl stood on a barrel, and watched the men that surrounded her. Her eyes were watery, and she was a large bruise on her cheek and arm, but was otherwise unharmed. "The bidding starts at 200." A man spoke, and automatically the jumble of voices spurted up and around.

 The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Aleera nudged the door open slightly, peering in. Her hackles rose, seeing what was happening. As much as she hated just rushing in, there wasn't much choice. The gixie was about to be sold. Aleera slunk in through the door, keeping low to the ground to avoid notice. She went around the edge of the crowd Finally someone noticed her and rose to kick the mutt out. She snarled and bit the man's leg before hurrying to Marla's side. She stood in front of her, teeth bared and growling at the men. She paused long enough to give the girl a push, nudging her towards the door. Then she turned back to growl at the men.  The tiger that should be....isn't....

Marla stared at the dog for a moment, before doing what she thought the dog wanted, and slowly backed to the doorway. Akila stood just outside the doorway and tugged the girl to the side, and out of their view.
Almost as soon as she was out of view, the men growled. Why would they be held back by some random mutt!? They went after the dog, raising the knives from their belts.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Aleera snarled again, biting the closest man, making him yelp and stumble back. She moved to stand in the doorway, blocking it. She wanted to make sure the child was well away before she moved. Subtly, she began shifting, growing larger and her fangs longer. It was enough to make the men pause for a moment. She looked like a hell dog, with her black fur. After a moment then, they advanced again, using numbers to boost their confidence. Aleera fought the best she could but numbers soon told on her. She yelped as they attacked her. By the time she turned to flee, it was too late. The angry men kicked the bloody dog out the door. There she lay, not breathing and her throat cut. The men slammed the door shut, going back inside to grumble. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Akila had sent the parents and child on their way, and when Aleera was suddenly out again, she gasped, and gathered the Dog in her arms, and whispered, "Aleera!?" She knelt with the dog.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... For a long moment, there was nothing - No breath and no heartbeat. Then, so slowly but picking up speed, the changes happened. Flesh knitted together and fur smoothed to skin. She started breathing again with a gasp. Sitting up again, Aleera was fully human once more. She shook her head slowly. "Ugh. I hate it when I'm killed. It just plain sucks." She said, her voice raspy as she finished the last of the shift. The tiger that should be....isn't....

Akila sighed teary eyed and hugged the female, "Gods, you scared me! Please be careful with this stuff...I'm sorry I wasn't in there with you." She apologized guiltily.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Aleera blinked at the girl, as if just noticing the tears. "I scared you? Sorry. I thought you knew. Shapeshifters are extremely hard to kill." She hugged Akila. "Don't apologize. I was the best one to go in. What if it had been you? Tossed out with your throat slit? I will survive that. Unpleasant, but I'll survive. You won't." She reassured the girl, not wanting her to feel guilty. "Trust me. I've had worse people after me than them. A simple knife to the throat is not going to kill me." The tiger that should be....isn't....

"Oh, I didn't know that." Akila looked up, and stood, "Come on...before they come out." She brushed herself off, wiping her cheeks and smiled a little.

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... "You're right. Let's go." Aleera said, rising and walking away. She rubbed at her throat, though the feeling was only in her mind. "But since I didn't explain before, I will now. A shifter is extremely hard to kill. As long as the brain lives, I will live. And the brain can go for several minutes without oxygen so I can literally 'play dead'. It's useful at time." She said with a small smile. "As long as my brain is still functioning, I can shift forms and thus heal myself. I'm not invincible though. If I'm unconscious, asleep, or braindead, I can't do anything about it. That's why I'm especially careful of headshots." The tiger that should be....isn't....

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... "Basically, unless I get a hard blow to the head, don't worry about me." Aleera summed up for the girl. She smiled at the girl. "I was glad to help, even if it did mean adding another death to my list. I wanted to help them when they first showed at the hearing, but well, I had my hands tied." She explained guilty. The tiger that should be....isn't....

The tiger that shouldn't be....is.... Aleera looked at the ground. "I just wish I could have helped earlier." She looked up at the sun as they entered the town again. "We should get back to Clorogne, before you're late to give him lunch." She suggested to the girl. She didn't care if she revealed that she'd been listening to them earlier this morning. Sometimes, eavesdropping was the only way to learn things. The tiger that should be....isn't....

"Oh!" Akila hurried slightly, "Okay, let's go!" She sped up to a jog. At this pace they would be late...and she didn't want to make him more angry than she had that morning.
