Auror BUGLED loudly, her displeasure known as Amortentia went near white. Her SISTER was a beloved thing, terribly impoirtant. Passing by them on her way to her violent siblings, the Green sent a kreel and a warm thought to Amortentia, It will be alright. You are wonderful, beautiful and loved. With that, the Green started stalking between the candidates. It was time to defend them.

------

Gryffindor balked. Hey, this most certainly wasn't awesome. Things were going all sorts of wrong, and Avada Kedavra's killing of one of the Candidates got a whirl of red and white in to those normally joyous eyes. His first thoughts were to Amortentia, warm and soothing. She would be okay, and He? HE would protect her, if she wanted...but their siblings in the crowd were going too far. With a loud cry, he threw himself forwards, THIS WILL STOP! He might only be a Brown, but Gryffindor would be damned if he let anything stop him from protecting the candidates.

Rune - HR - She/Her

As the violence began, ALL Rune did was get out of the way of the babies. Her eyes were cold, on Crucio with a sense of encouragement. Yes. Whoever had done that to the poor Amortentia deserved Crucio's rage. Deserved mauling. Even the wound that she now sported on her leg was nothing, a mere token to remind Candidates that they weren't above ANYTHING. These dragons were PARAMOUNT, the most important creatures on all of Pern. Her mind TURNED to Amortentia. No, the little Green wasn't useless or worthless. She was a LOVELY thing, and deserved all the praise and love. Shards on whoever was foolish enough to think otherwise.

Rhys - HR- He/Him
Avada Kedavra had taken a life. The boy's eyes went wide and he stared, unmoving. While he didn't LIKE death, it was inevitable, so all he did was let out a breath and nod. Yeah....Dragons killed candidates sometimes. It happened. And with the rage that had been caused by Amortentia's near-Betweened state, the Candidates deserved it right now, didn't they? He would quietly accept, and watch...and be careful not to get caught in a raging dragon's path.

Alumet of Gold Zenobiath
As if she could sense her sister's distress, Alumet moved to the edge of their perch, looking out over now bloody sands, and sending her own wave of fondness through her connection to Lusialu. Her heart went out to the now-hiding Green Amortentia. Poor thing...Poor, beloved thing. The Gold dragon kreeled her distress, but brushed Lusialu's mind again, You are perfect, beloved, and you will find yours. You make your sister proud with every step you take, and every action. You, my dear, are a wonder. Of course she would support the sister of her Rider. For FAMILY was important to Alumet.

Veltanna couldn’t stop the flinch from the mental lashes Crucio was sending out. Each lash was met with a flinch but she stayed standing and ready to…do what? All she could think of was to get in the way. She was big and muscular. She could take a few hits. The greens were upset and Veltanna hoped that either the other dragons could calm them down or they could find theirs and that would calm them.

Taibbi

It was an odd, awful sort of luck that Taibbi had been moving about, getting into staring contests with excessively tall candidates. It meant that she was not standing in the same vicinity as Rahmi and Tizzy. It meant that Tizzy was the one slashed viciously by the irate hatchling, even though Taibbi had intended to place herself between the gentle-spirited girl and potentially violent dragonets.

She moved toward Tizzy, forgetting completely about her minor confrontation with the other candidate in the wake of so much sudden, violent enmity from the hatchlings. Her movement was aborted, though, when she came close enough to realize that the candidate who had been shaken so vigorously was not only not moving, but not breathing. This was not the first dead body she'd seen, and the young man in no way resembled her father, but she was reminded of him anyway and a sob ripped from her throat.

When, almost immediately after, the furious green lashed out with a wave of mental anguish, Taibbi dropped to her knees, heedless of the way the tiny hot particles dug into her flesh, and retched. There was nothing in her stomach, for there had not been time for breakfast, but bitter bile burned its way up her esophagus, over her tongue, and onto the sand beneath her doubled-over form.

Martirae and Gold Anakumath

Tell me about your lovely boy, Zygmuth, Anakumath inquired with genuine interest, leaning out to nudge her sister mentally as she ate. Any chosen by the green had to be wonderful, she was certain, and she was all headknobs to listen even when she took another cut of meat from Martirae. Thank you, she flooded the woman with love for something Marty had felt was a very expected thing, but Anakumath didn’t allow the thought for long. We should still be thankful for the little things, they’re just as important, she explained before being offered another bite.

As one of her cousins settled in, Anakumath reached out to nudge the very tired looking Eskharath. Had he a difficult a time in finding his as it had her to make it to her beloved? Oh, she couldn’t simply speculate on it - Is all well, Eskharath? Your chosen looks like a very fine young man, and certainly, he would take care of anything the brown needed, but it couldn’t hurt to check in and make sure all was well.

Too bad she couldn't see it was not, beyond eyeshot.

Tuelarua - High Reaches Candidate

Her head ached, hurt in ways she never knew she could be hurt on the sands. Every little rustle of sand beneath her own feet makes her headache seem worse, makes the dark spots in her vision all the more comforting. Tuela could let go, succumb into their soothing darkness. Maybe if she followed into the dark, her headache would finally set her free. It isn't a wise choice -- she could wake up trampled, chewed on.. She could not wake up, too.

But it’s her new companion’s own yells of pain that finally pull her away from their tempting lures of darkness and relief, hands peeling from her own eyes very slowly. His voice made her head throb, yet he was lashing, pained just as she was.. But head down, hands at his head--distracted with pain, and she instantly worries for his safety. After her gentle touch had caused such a response earlier, she does not dare touch him now. Yet her mind ached in a way that she’s sure if she spoke, it would cause more pain. It’s a minor dilemma as Tuelarua took staggered steps around him, placing herself in front of the other candidate with a mindful space for his swings. “I got you.” Oh, she’d been right. Ow..

But she would protect him in her fragile state, even if he managed to clip her. Tuelarua was not the strongest, or biggest -- but she’d try.

The color returned to Amortentia's hide, a soft thought sent out to her sister. Suddenly, Crucio's mental attacks stopped and she sat down. And laughed and laughed, and laughed. Oh, that was too funny. Really? All of that?

Amortentia had the grace to look sheepish.

Tahirah--High Reaches Candidate

Everything suddenly went out of control. There was no time to react to anything or respond to anything. The bronze had jumped at a boy when the sweet little green seemed deflated again. The worry she would go between made her blood run cold and she froze. She didn't know what to do, she didn't want to see that if it was going to happen but she knew she couldn't look away. She did her best to try and send sweet thoughts to the green but, things just went...haywire.

The boy the bronze had grabbed was gone, dead. She hadn't known Shinnikan very well, having only been here for a turn or so but...

The feelings were shaken away as she felt the mental lashes from Crucio, the hate that kept ringing in her ears, it was all Tahirah could do not to fold in on herself. Whoever had made Amorentia hurt the way they had...it was horrible and there was blood and other people hurt. Though, better that it was a candidate and not the little green, the dragonets were more important then they were. It didn't matter how many candidates died as long as the dragonets found their intended.

Then as soon as it began, Crucio's mental lashes stopped. Tahirah lifted her eyes to see the color had returned to Amorentia's hide and relief filled her mind. She had managed to not get caught by any of the dragonet's physical attacks, so she was unscathed compared to the others. She was just so very glad the beautiful green was okay, even if Crucio's laugh made Tahirah smile.

Willim
Willim felt Shanley wilt in fear against him as Crucio tore through the Candidates and the bronze actually killed a Candidate. His own shock and horror reflected in his amber-brown eyes; they had been told this sort of thing could happen, but to see it...

They were standing well back in the middle of the crowd, but the crazed green was carving a swath in their direction, and was now mentally lashing them with her rage. Willim had never felt pain like this; pain combined with a hate so pure it was blinding. But the young man shielded Shanley with his body and stood his ground. He'd punch her senseless if she came close to them.

Another bronze leapt in front of the rampaging green and took the damage she meant to dish out on the Candidates, and Willim cheered a little, strongly identifying with the bronze. That was what he intended to do should the chaos reach them: defend Shanley with his own body.

Then suddenly it stopped.

Thaliawen
Shanley!

Jeri
Jeri couldn't watch. She just couldn't. It was all too awful! What was supposed to be a joyous occasion was turning into a bloodbath. Nothing like this had ever happened the other times she'd Stood; oh sure, Candidates got hurt, but not killed, and never had a dragonet gone on such an intense rampage. She clung to Helane and sobbed.

And suddenly it ended. Jeri looked up, wiping tears from her face. A laugh -- presumably from the green -- permeated her mind. What was going on?

Revel1984
Helane!

Tokki
He was too horrified to move. The keening of the sickly looking green must have set her sister off, and she was ripping through the crowd of Candidates as if they were toys. From his vantage point, Tokki hadn't seen the boy get killed, but he knew something awful had happened. What would he do if that crazed green came for him?

What was worse were the mental lashings. It felt like being flogged with a hundred knives in his head, all venom and hate and rage. It was all he could do to keep from crying out in pain -- but that would never do. He was a Candidate of Western Weyr, and he didn't want to break down in front of the High Reaches Candidates.

Abruptly it stopped. Tokki craned his neck, trying to see what had happened, relieved that it seemed to be over. Maybe things could go back to normal now.

Shar's gaze was removed from the little green for a moment as one of the other Candidates yelled on the sands, then darted forward. Had she been younger Shar would have jumped after the girl and tackled her to the sands to keep her from approaching the clutch, but she knew what she was doing on her own was stupid enough and that to add to the confusion would only enrage the dragons.

It seemed, however, that they were plenty enraged. From her crouched position on the sands she had a brilliant yet terrifying view of a red-eyed green charging towards her, screeching the entire way. Years of Standing gave Shar a bit of an edge and she knew that running would make it worse, so she simply held her ground and flopped down onto the sands the moment Sectumsempra was within striking distance. Claws tore at her back and arms as she curled into the fetal position, protecting her neck and softer stomach and chest, but she didn't move until the rampaging green had run over her. It seemed she wasn't the intended target but that the entire Sands were her objective as Shar heard screams of pain from others around them.

It wasn't just Sectumsempra on the attack, though. Shar's head was suddenly filled with nothing but pain as Crucio's mental slashes wracked her nerves, sending involuntary shudders through her, her physical wounds suddenly far more painful than they had been. She gasped softly at the intensity of it, squeezing her eyes shut as the waves of pain ebbed and flowed.

After what seemed like hours but was probably only seconds, the waves of mental anguish subsided, allowing Shar to uncurl from the defensive position and assess her wounds. She couldn't see the ones on her back, but although she could feel blood trickling down her spine, she could tell they were superficial at best. The worst of the bleeding was coming from her shin where a claw had caught her right over her bone where there was little between it and the air but skin. She could see white through the blood and knew the cut was deep, but not life-threatening. Still seated on the sands she tore at the hem of her white robes, ripping the fabric until she had a long, white and slightly splattered bit of cloth in hand. She didn't waste time in tying it just under her knee, keeping it tight to stem the flow of blood.

Only when she was sure the bleeding had slowed did she look around. The Sands were covered in blood, dragons were battling, and one of the bronzes sat atop a still body. Shards...

Dragging herself to her feet and favoring her wounded leg, Shar turned to go back to the semi-circle. It was then she saw Rizdax, covered in blood and still heavily bleeding, standing in front of the group of his friends. Despite her sudden flood of worry she knew he'd be all right. If he was standing now - as she was - then he'd make it.

A cruel yet amused laugh rang through her head again and she grimaced as she hobbled back towards the group, each step agonizing. She knew it had only been a matter of time before something set off that group. Now, hopefully, it was out of their system and they could resume finding Theirs so those that hadn't perished could get some medical attention.

"Hang in there," she said, her voice clipped and slightly higher than usual as the pain flooded through her again. "Sit if you feel light headed, Riz. It'll get the attention of a healer." She wouldn't be leaving his side again, not when he was losing that much blood that quickly. He wasn't in danger yet of passing out but she wasn't going to let either of them be dragged from the sands unconscious. They had people to protect and dragons to possibly Impress.

"Good job," she added very quietly. The girls behind Riz were splattered, yes, but unharmed as far as she could see. She knew how much it meant to him to be there to take the brunt of the attack and a bit of praise could go a long way to fight off pain.

Torin

Despite the flash of murder in his heart, this was really not how Torin had wanted things to go. Obviously. No one deserved to die like that young man had, though whether the others deserved their maulings was a discussion for a less hectic time. He continued to hold his ground on slightly shakier legs, hubris keeping him from obsessing over the fact that it could have been him as he winced against Crucio's mental lashes. He finally moved again as he darted out of the way of Sectumsempra, catching a whipping tail to the ankle and hissing sharply in pain. He settled quickly enough. Despite appearances, despite his history, this was nothing he couldn't handle.

Torin watched brown battle green, cousins burst from their shells to defend Candidates, and Amortentia, pale and in peril. And then, suddenly, she wasn't. Curious.

Korbet

Ah, yes. There it was. The bloodbath.

Not all hatchings were like this—he knew for a fact that Susurinth's children had been angels, for example—but the ones that were haunted his dreams at the most inconvenient times. Even so, he had never seen such an... efficient kill. Korbet wasn't even immediately sure that the man was dead, but when he realized Shinnikan was truly gone, he closed his eyes and hunched deeper into his pile of flits.

    #notallhatchings

Rykin

And to think he had thought this hatching lucky because a bronze was first out on the sands. Rykin stared at Shinnikan's motionless body, his mouth held open a sliver as his breathing sped up. He nodded at Ruunan—yes, yes, they should go—but then Crucio's scathing hatred was replaced by another burst of laughter and he paused, confused. Other hatchlings were still snarling and snapping, but maybe the worst was over more quickly than it had begun.

"I think we might be better off not drawing attention?" he replied, voice low. If his companions wanted to run he would follow, but going unnoticed seemed like a fine strategy to him.

Halvor

The sight that befell upon the sands was not one Halvor had expected, nor that he could have predicted. He had seen the dragonets get riled up by something. He just hadn’t thought someone would be stupid enough to not only quit whatever thought they had but to somehow make it so much worse. The dragonets had descended upon them—but it wasn’t to play. Unless the goal was to play with their insides. Halvor shifted himself so that he was better braced for the green Crucio that was descending upon them. Avada Kedavra had also descended upon the boys.

No matter what he’d done to help minimize the damage wrought by the dragonets he’d still sustained some massive, deep, cuts on his legs and arms—both of which had been used to shield his torso and neck. For the first few slices into his legs he’d managed to keep silent, but with a few more deep lacerations he allowed a grunt of pain to peek through. If the dragonets didn’t kill him today he might very well hunt down the candidate who caused this. Never before had he desired to hit someone so much. As a fighter in Bitra, and a near slave to the mob lord, he’d never enjoyed or wanted to become that monster. However, he briefly contemplated becoming one now.

Halvor shook his head. That was the pain talking. The candidate at the root cause of all this definitely deserved what the mob boss would call a ”talking to in the dead of night,” but he wasn’t going to be the one to do it. He’d be damned if he got kicked out from being a candidate. Let that person suffer the consequences of their thoughts. He tried to not look at the boy who was dead on the sands. There was no way of saving him.

Halvor kept one eye on the candidates who had been the most injured and the suddenly still Crucio. What the hell? Was she done? With one less threat to focus on, Halvor turned his attention to the fighting brown. Ichor was all over the tiny dragonet, and Halvor felt a sense of being proud of the tiny dragon seep through his heart. That was a dragon worth being bonded to.

(posting for Thali who can't get into Gaia!)

Ionan was having trouble keeping from trembling. He had always claimed to be brave, but seeing a girl ripped from Rahmi’s arms, a girl he’d teased and interacted with laying on the sands in a puddle of blood... He felt sick to his stomach. He didn’t move at first, when Rahmi called to him for help. He felt frozen. He felt sick. What if it had been Kinye? Kinye was somewhere on the sands. And the green could hurt her as easily as she’d hurt this girl...

“Is she going to die?” He asked, going to Rahmi, eyes wide. He began to mimic the other boy, tearing at the seam and then tearing strips from his robe. “Don’t worry Tizzy.” He sounded pretty worried. She didn’t look at him, though. He thought her eyes were glazed over. He looked to Rahmi. “I don’t know if a healer can get here, with that horrible creature on the sands,” he said, indicating the green.

Amila

Her heart was beginning to beat faster to match her rapid breathing. Clinically speaking, Amila was hyperventilating, the panic attack beginning to well into a full storm of her fears and insecurities. Amila wanted to hide -- there was noplace to hide. Anila wanted to cry -- she couldn't, she couldn't -- her mind was wrapping around itself chewing her out for being a foolish, weak, useless child.

She registered Ielin enoughthough -- which made her start, seeming to shrink and wither as she stepped back slowly -- somewhat submissively as her eyes closed and she finally settled to a crouch in a ball, still technically standing, but making herself as small and submissive and harmless looking as she could.

She was a good girl see? She was, she was good, she wasn't going to do any more harm -- just let her stay like this, out of everyone's way.

If you asked him later, Saekagi would have sworn, in dazed confusion, that he blinked and the sands around him turned red. One moment everything had been fine, better than he’d anticipated. No blood, no suffering, and then the dragons were moving, and someone was down, their entire existence snuffed out with a surprisingly undramatic ‘pop’ of… he didn’t want to think about what it had been.

He didn’t even want to think

Something had gone wrong. Something had gone completely, overwhelmingly wrong and he didn’t know what he could have, or should have done differently to prevent it. He didn’t know if he could have prevented it. He felt vaguely as though maybe he should have tried but had no idea how.

One of the greens… Sectum Sempra he thought, but maybe more than one (it was all suddenly almost too much to process while it was happening) was in amongst them and the dragon that had killed a boy was just standing over him in challenge while his sibling ripped into people.

You weren’t supposed to run from the dragons.

He wasn’t entirely sure that wasn’t because it was just a faster end if you didn’t.

There was blood on his robes and he was entirely unsure if it was his or someone elses, and he did. Not. want to know.

Someone was dead, one of the little greens looked like she might follow and he couldn’t tell if it was because of the dead candidate or something else anymore. He might be able to put the order together correctly later but right now it was all just a tumble that went from numb confusion to distress and pain as Crucio lashed out with her mind like a knife.

He just wanted to curl up on the painfully hot sand and scream that he was sorry, sorry for whatever had happened, sorry it had happened, sorry he didn’t know how to make it better because he would if he only knew how. He just didn’t want anyone else to die. HE didn’t want to die.

And then the attacks on his mind just… stopped, as abruptly as they’d started, and left him standing there shaking as though it were cold, holding on To Helaku in stunned confusion as if he’d missed time.

“Are you ok??” He asked, or thought he asked, or might have repeated more than necessary. Helaku could not be ok, some of the blood on his robes seemed to be from the other boy, and he was too rattled to have an easy time judging how serious it was past ‘he’s still standing, he’s still breathing’. Both were good.
