Zamistia

Zamistia didn't think things could get any crazier, but it seemed that things were about to take drastic turns for the worst. Yes, thankfully, two other dragons managed to impress, which she was happy about. Unfortunately, it seemed something upset one of the pretty greens on the sands. Oh no, the girl looked so pale and her eyes looked so sad, she hoped the dragon wasn't going to go between. She only knew about it from what others told her, but she hoped the baby would find her's. However, the green almost being lost set off her sister, which reminded her of Tizzy for a moment. She watched in horror as violence happened all a around them, one of the male candidates being killed by Avada Kedavra. Then another green began to tear into the candidates, the first one being...Tizenia. No, her little sister, she felt tears beginning to fill her eyes at the sight. No, she couldn't loose her sister, she couldn't. She didn't have much time to think about it, before Riz was putting her and the others behind him. He did it just in time, as a dragon tore into him, feeling herself having to step back. Her face was pale by this time, her mind hurting from the mental pain of Crucio, causing her to gasp in pain.

"She is right...we are not...leaving you,"Misty finally found her voice. She held onto his robe too, her eyes looking to where her sister was. Someone was trying to save her, her mind pleading for the other to manage it. Then as things seemed to calm down, the green seeming to feel better and Crucio laughing. Soon after, Shar came back and suggested Riz sit down.

"Please Riz...listen to her. I...I....can't lose people....I care about. My sister..was attacked too,"she whispered, soft sobs coming from the girl. She felt like sinking onto her knees, feeling like the wind was knocked out of her. Tizzy....her beloved sister...what if she didn't make it. And Riz...hurt protecting them. This wasn't supposed to happen, but she knew the babies...they had been...well...defending their sister. She just wished whatever made the baby sad before hadn't happened. She had also noticed two baby dragons join the fray, she hoped they both were okay, she didn't want anyone else badly hurt.

Demanthra and Monath

Demanthra was watching everything through Monath and she was doing everything she could to keep it together. At least one death and so many candidates wounded, plus possibly two dragons. One baby dragon had almost gone between, what had caused all of this? Then she noticed her brother and Rhiyn, they did not look good at all. Rhiyn wasn't moving and had gone pale, Ionan looked shocked. Thankfully, Ionan began to help.

Monath dear, get in touch with them, please,Demanthra requested of her green.

On it, Mine. Ionan, your sister is proud of you for helping, despite your fears. She believes in you and so do I. Rhiyn, everything will be okay. Mine says she sends her love,Monath thought to her rider, then the two boys.

Finnisa
The time for witty reintroductions was done with a scream from the dragonets as they, in an alarmingly distressed attack, tore into the candidates. Without thought, Finnisa stepped forward between the other ladies and the coming violence, just in time for Sectumsempra to charge past, raking up her thigh and dragging her down to the ground to be trod upon as the green charged on.

Dazed, bleeding, the woman blinked up at the ceiling of the cavern as the pain slowly filtered in. "That went...badly," she grunted, blinking owlishly. Not at all like her ovines. No, not at all...

Meztli
Ruunan's cry made Meztli turn, and in their distraction something sharp slashed across the front of one leg. They'd nicked fingers, thumbs, hands before on sharp blades in the kitchens, but those injuries had always been more or less their own fault. Being attacked? That was...it made the pain worse, and they grimaced, stepping quickly back even as blood began to lightly stain the front of the end of their robe. A blessedly small wound, all told.

"Come on, up..." They reached for Ruunan, but he was already rising, and there was panic writ clear in that face. Meztli hadn't been a candidate long at all...but they'd at least paid some attention to the lessons. "I don't think, no, we should stay put." The other dragons, Go The Distance, Auror, You'll Be In My Heart, had leapt in to the rescue. "Running might get their attention again, yeah...but be ready to step back if they come this way again." They also weren't entirely sure how well their leg would hold them if they had to run. Standing was one thing, but...

Deftly they shifted to stand more between Ruunan and the squabbling hatchlings, almost side by side with Rykin. Things seemed to be winding down...they were definitely a lover, not a fighter, but it felt just wrong to let a kid be more in the way of danger. "Besides, what if your dragon's out there? If you run, it might between if it cant' find you or think you're rejecting it, right?" That was how it worked, wasn't it?

Zelaya
When the carnage began, Zelaya's heart sank. No...no. They'd hoped it wouldn't come ot this, but the poor hatchlings had clearly been pushed past the breaking point. With stoic solemnity they looked on as one boy was laid low—forever—and others were ripped into. Such a waste. They had only begun when Amortentia had cried out, which must be because either hers was not there, or because someone had done what they ought not, had been told not to do. And since the green was yet with them, not gone between...they were inclined to think the latter.

A flicker of anger sparked in the pit of their gut, instantly snuffed out, replaced by that same calm stillness. Now was not the time...but already they knew they would go to Gr'del, and apologize on behalf of the candidates here today. It was a tragic loss of life, but it was, if you asked them, entirely the fault of the candidates themselves who could not keep themselves well in hand. It was reckless, it was selfish. To endanger a hatchling with untethered emotions, and now to endanger even more—what if in their panic the babies killed one of their own? One meant for one of the yet-unhatched eggs? No, one or two people's self-indulgent thoughts can and had endangered the very future of the Weyr, of Pern itself by risking these treasured infants.

She pushed feelings of composed reassurance towards Siloth as she felt him reach out to her. She had no intention of charging into danger, of course. Please keep Father safe—do not let him hurt himself over me, I couldn't bear it. Besides, if she were to die, it would be a death with merit. She would have died doing as she ought, a sacrifice to the Weyr, a number lost to slake the fear and anger of a hatchling that would, thus sated, go on to find its partner and rise to defend all life on Pern. So had gone Shinnikan—his was a hero's death, for all that it was the fault of her peers, and as worthy as any rider lost between to thread. But still...she gazed towards the hatchlings, doing her best to continue to present only salm, restful, gentle welcoming love. Please, precious champions—find yours now, before your righteous anger turns to harm.

Theo
For just a moment Theo had mistaken the girl running for the wilting green as a good thing. Surely this would be another impression. Another glorious pair of lives intertwined. And then...

A streak of ink upon his page grew, and grew, and grew. The tip of the quill, just lightly touching, bled ink to match the spreading red stain upon the sands, obscuring the half-done sketch of a candidate blissfully cupping a hatchling's jaw.

(Posting for Thali cause Gaia is a stupid butt)

Rhiyn had drained of color, and instead of rushing for help, he seemed to sink into himself. What was he supposed to do? Nothing came to mind. He felt frozen. He was seeing, but not seeing. He swallowed dryly. He heard the girl’s cries at first, and then Rahmi encouraging her. Was she not dead? How could she not be dead? He didn’t want to be here anymore. He would have given anything to be beside Demanthra instead. The sands were dangerous, and no one ever did anything about hatchling misbehavior lest it scare the baby between. He knew that. He didn’t want babies vanishing between, but he didn’t want them sinking their teeth into him either!

Monath’s voice came to him, and he looked up. Away from the sands. Towards anything that could be a comfort. He didn’t always get along with Monath, but hearing her had calmed him some. “Everything will be okay?” He echoed, in disbelief. He didn’t think anything would be okay. The girl was dying! “If you say so.”

Lucius--High Reaches Candidate

Focused inwardly on himself at the moment Amortentia's keen was what made Lucius head whip around. Blue eyes moved to the deflating and almost white green and anger flared throughout his chest. The fact that this was happening, someone had the audacity to think something that had hurt the hatchling in such a way to make the green think that she was not worth anything, which was farther from the truth and he knew that. The carnage that happened afterwards, well Lucius expected it at the moment and he didn't blame them either. He was sure that if he would rally the same way if someone he cared about thought they were worthless.

Crucio and Sectumsempra were who Lucius was watching as they went tearing through the candidates. His eyes flicked to Zelaya as Crucio was making her way through them, not caring who was in the crossfire. He took the mental lashes in stride knowing full well that while he hadn't been the one to cause the problem they all deserved it. It was when the green was coming nearer that Lucius positioned himself by Zelaya in such a way that when the green went by, her wingclaw tore into his robe and lower left leg instead of theirs. A grimace contorted his face but he didn't move or let out a sound, eyes narrowed. While Zelaya may not have needed protecting..shard it all, they were the only real friend he had really made here and he was not going to allow them to get hurt while he was capable of taking it. If anything they didn't deserve the hatchlings wrath, they had done everything right and not even been on edge about an attack before when everyone else was.

Glancing back at Zelaya, Lucius smiled at them before his attention was turned to the bronze. The bronze who was still standing over the body of the boy he had killed. It was like the hatchling was taking size of every male on the sands at the moment and Lucius couldn't help but narrow his eyes, more to show he wasn't backing down and he wasn't going to move. His duty was clear, to stand here and wait for his intended dragon to find him...or die on the sands. He wanted to be a hero, a champion of people, he couldn't be intimidated or bullied if he wanted to truly be that.

Of course the hatchlings that jumped into the fray also caught his eye and attention and he felt a fire of hope burning in his chest again. Things would be fine, there were hatchlings here who wanted to protect the candidates from harm. The sight of Gryffindor inserting himself within the battle had a smile return to Lucius features, the brown was prepared, just like the others were.

Of course a sudden laughter penetrated his thoughts as he noticed Crucio had stopped in her movement and...Amortentia seemed to have more color to her hide once more. She even seemed to be a bit...bashful about something? He couldn't help but let out a relieved sigh as he turned to look at Zelaya again, eyes moving over their form. "That was...insane..Are you alright?" He knew there was a chance it wasn't over. There were still unimpressed babies out there as well as unhatched babies, but with the calm like that in an eye of a hurricane, it allowed him time to asses and make sure his friend was okay.

Heck to the NOPE ... when all hell broke loose Farellen got himself the heck out of the way, he dived away from one green before dodging the other's whirlwind and seemingly mindless attack, he felt for the dead boy but right now his mind was on survival...

WHAM!

something hard hit him in the jaw, he felt something crack he was sure and he tasted blood, and he hit the ground hard.... blinking through pained tears he looked around to see what dragon had hit him, only to see just another candidate, freaking out. "Hey!" he tried to say, but winced, his jaw hurt insanely and he was sure he felt a loose tooth. Clenching his jaw he put his hand on the other boy's shoulder, a stupid move perhaps but the kid was freaked "hey it's ok, listen, she's stopped" he hissed through closed teeth

Teiha
Not a broken jaw but possible minor dislocation, at the very least muscles have just tightened up in agony, his chipped tooth is wobbly for sure now lolol

Orri

Avada Kedavra simply…killed someone. Just like that. And now Sectumsepra was loose amongst the candidates like a wild little inferno. That was the biggest point of his focus, the green snapping and clawing at what she could, even downing someone herself. And while it was hard to think through Crucio’s mental stabs of pain, even as his heart began to beat faster and faster, even as he felt the fear welling up in him...Orri couldn’t help but think: what would Dad do? Save someone, probably. But his feet wouldn’t move. Maybe it was because he didn’t know what to do. Maybe it was because Soui and Dehka were with him still, and he didn’t want to abandon them even for the hope of heroism. Maybe his head hurt too much. Maybe--

Sectumsempra turned to face him, vicious and bloodstained as she bounded their way.

Adrenaline sped through his system. That was how Orri knew she had marked him. The minute calculations in her trajectory, the way her tail whipped to keep her balance, the fierce gaze zeroing in on him. Even in a blind rage, the green seemed very aware. And if he didn’t keep her busy long enough…He needed to stop being in his head. What were the facts? One bronze was eyeing the boys and possibly targeting them. One green was lashing out. While one had settled, the other needed to be diverted for whatever length necessary.

“D-Dehka,” he said, already moving forward to put space between himself and the other two, his limbs shaking at this terrible course of action. Orri felt the white pitch hot fear stabbing at him as Crucio did, but he hastened nonetheless. His voice rose. “Dehka, get her out’ve--!”

Sectumsempra leapt and pinned him down like he was just a herdbeast, and he was cut-off with a draconic snarl.

Orri was not used to dealing with that much pain at once, or really pain at all. He had been lucky, living at Cauldron Cothold with his mother, where the most he had to worry about had been scalding water and sore muscles from work, maybe the occasional n** of a visiting flit. This...This was nothing he could have prepared for. The green dragged her claws through his back and side as he curled up defensively, trying to remember what the candidate master had told them. He felt her mouth latch into his hair at some point, her mental screeches barely comprehensible other than the pain and loneliness and absolute fury. Something gave when she tugged. He held himself tighter, making his own teeth-grit shrieks.

He didn’t move when Sectumsempra left to torture some other poor candidate.

Helane was horrified, for the first time in her life, (that she could remember) she stopped bouncing, she was perfectly still, she didn't even breathe .... at least until the green came barelling her way, it was too late to get out of the way easily but she had managed to avoid the first green, with Jeri clinging to her, she'd have clung back just as hard but another green came and Helane felt a sharp pain, then wetness spread down her leg, which then buckled, she gently pushed Jeri away from her, to try and keep her safe and went down on her knees, it was only then that she saw Ticene, "no!" she gasped, shock tightening her throat so that she could barely whisper. "Ticene, stay still please!" she said quietly, her own pains forgotten "Jeri, stay away from them for now ... i have to help Ticene" she said, helping the other girl to her feet. "c'mon Ticene, steady now" she said, hoping her new potential friend wasn't about to die on her, practically holding Ticene up, she got her to the healers. She turned and was about to go back to Jeri when she saw someone else on the ground, that wasn't the dead boy, she, cautiously, limped over, the gash in her leg being irritated with every step but she ignored it, she'd had worse, had lost some fingers. Kneeling down beside Tizzy, she checked the candidate was breathing, she was thankfully.. she turned to the girl's companions "i know you're worried but she's hurt, i need to get her some help, will you both help me carry her?", before gathering her in her arms, at this point laying in the sand was bound to be worse than being carried across them, she gathered Tizzy up gently, waiting for Ionan and Rahmi to reply before getting up with the girl in her arms.

Rokar was just stunned, he knew maulings happened .. but this... this was insane... a bronze just straight up murdered a candidate in cold blood, the kid hadn't been doing ANYTHING, the baby had just walked past, then BAM ... killed that kid... and a green charged into the group of candidates behind him, he was pretty glad he had moved forwards, he was so busy looking behind him, he didn't see the other green begin a charge, he gasped as heard thundering behind him, he turned in time for the green to clamp her jaws on his arm, and using his stomach as a scratch post. he gargled as she let go, contiuing her rampage, his arm left arm hung loos while his right clutched his slashed open abdomen, thankfully, for the moment, it seemed as if his insides were staying inside.... but he was in trouble, he fell to his knees, almost toppling but holding himself up, before grabbing his stomach again, "ow" he said, undramatically..

Zeraiah

Bravery had its limits.

As it had since the Hatching began, time seemed to stretch and then contract, sometimes slow, sometimes too fast. The decision to be brave had seemed like a good one at the time. Be brave, encourage the dragonets to relax, to find Theirs, try to dim some of the red flashing at them from a few sets of eyes. It wasn’t that they hadn’t been brave before. It was just important to make sure that bravery was front and center.

Until things went sideways, that was. Amortentia’s creel of distress tipped the scales, drawing attention from Candidates and dragons alike. Zeraiah exhaled a very quiet, “No,” when her color seemed to fade. There wasn’t really time for more than that. Well, there was enough for him to hear the bugles and see the movement and for his heart to all but stop in his chest and all the heat he’d been feeling from the Sands to turn into a very sick sort of chill.

A chill that rooted Zeraiah to the spot as he watched that bronze hatchling catch and shake and break a candidate. Not just break. Destroy and then step on him. Stand on him. Stand ...defiantly? Was he daring someone to do something about it? It wouldn’t be Zeraiah. Whether it was fear or self-preservation that locked his joints and stole his breath, any ideas about racing to the rescue froze in his blood. Eyes wide, all he could do was watch in horror as more dragons moved -- charged -- toward them, catching and roaring an tearing as they came.

He didn’t move until the last moment, until the fierce green that had hatched from the Crucio egg rampaged toward where he and Zyanzi stood. Oh, but then he moved, panic breaking through the ice to force him into motion. He didn’t turn his back, oh no, but he dove sideways. Out of the way. With luck, out of the way? Nearly out of the way. As she stormed past, her hind foot came down across his leg, tearing cloth and the flesh of his thigh beneath, a blaze of pain tearing a high-pitched yelp from his throat. He saw Zyanzi take a blow as well, then the green fury was gone, headed for new targets.

Until the brown -- which egg had he come from again? -- blocked her way, stood in her path and stopped her. Stopped one, but not all of her angry siblings. Still, it was enough. It gave him, them, time to … what? Not recover. To shake off the initial blows? Enough time for Zeraiah to sit up and inspect the gashes in his thigh, tight-lipped and pale. Shells, but that looked deep. And it hurt! But he was alive and that was better than -- no. Don’t think about that.

Zeeraiah looked around to be sure there were no more dragons coming to finish what the green had started, then slowly, carefully, worked out how to get to his feet. It took two tries, but he managed, and he held his weight almost entirely on the non-torn-up leg. What now? Move? Don’t move? If he moved and drew attention to himself, running wouldn’t be possible, not now, so, stand it was. Stand and wait and hope and … yeah. Be brave.

Ish.

“Hey,” he called toward Zyanzi. “Hey, are you all right?” His voice sounded high in his ears and that was yet another level of trouble he couldn’t afford now. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Are you okay?” Stupid questions, maybe. Definitely. None of this was okay. Especially not if they’d brought it on themselves.

Zeraiah

Zyanzi

Zyanzi let out a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding when he heard a rather high-pitched voice call out to him. He turned his eyes to search and spotted a pair of eyes staring directly at him, speaking to him. It was the boy he had spoken with before the madness. He swallowed once and put on the best smile he could in reassurance, walking carefully toward the fallen boy. Why was he on the ground... oh... oh! Oh my! Zyanzi blinked rapidly for a moment as he processed that the boy was injured. "I'm fine! Are you alright? That looks painful..." He said, sucking in a breath. His own swipe on his arm was nothing. "Can you feel your foot and such? Do you think you can stand?" He said, the mother hen side of him beginning to fluff its feathers. He needed to get this boy out of here, to safety. To the Between with himself... There were those far more injured! "We should try to get you to a healer. Get that to stop bleeding..." He murmured, eyeing it critically. He was no healer. He knew how to staunch the flow of blood. But his robes were blood themselves and dirty. No need to risk a dirtier wound with his efforts.

He knelt down next to Zeraiah, his eyes flicking around to carefully watch the going-ons, in case another dragon barrelled this way wishing more harm to befall the candidates. Zyanzi at that moment was ready to protect the fallen Zeraiah with his own hide if need-be.

Colors of the Wind almost seemed to sag on her feet as Amortentia finally regained some color, crooning to her sister, who summarily stopped attacking the poor candidates. It was true that a mistake had been made, but they had paid the price, in Colors' opinion.

She paused to nuzzle her green cousin, and gave Imperio a small boop with her snout before at last she began to make for the candidates. Sectumsempra and You'll Be In My Heart were still tangled in battle, and she angled towards them, picking up the pace somewhat, eyes flecked green and yellow as she flared her wings and trumpeted at them, ready to leap into the fray if they didn't come to their senses and settle.

Honestly, enough was enough! They were cousins, after all!

Ticene // She/her // High Reaches Candidate

Even if she wanted to, Ticene wouldn't have been capable of telling people what was happening on the sands at that moment. She stared down at the sand, her fingers digging into the grains as she tried to breath. Moving felt like it was just tearing her more, but she needed to get out of here. Deep breaths. Gather your strength and then get up. Get up and then one step at a time. That's what would get her out of here. The blurring shouts of candidates and calls of dragons meant nothing to her. Her vision swam as she blinked the tears away. Come on now, that wasn't going to help. Cry later. She tried once to push her arms straight, but limbs turned to jelly. A stifled cry of pain working out from between clenched teeth.

Someone called her name and Ticene momentarily stilled. It was nice to have an excuse not to move for a while. Staring at the sand she noticed as red droplets began to fall to the sand. Tilting her head she saw the blood dripping from her robe. Huh, it had soaked through to the front. That was interesting. There weren't any wounds on her front, so it must have been run off from her back. No wonder everything felt so warm. Before she really had time to dwell on it anymore Helane was beside her.

Ticene grit her teeth to smother another scream as she was lifted to her feet. Her legs shook and she wasn't proud of how much she needed to lean on the other candidate, but she didn't have any faith in her ability to stand unaided. Ticene let out a grown and nodded as Helane got her moving. One foot in front of the other, that was all that she needed to do. The candidate grit her teeth and shut her eyes as they moved. Each step felt like flames licking at her back, but it would be over soon. They just needed to get to the healers and then she wouldn't have to move as much. The candidate barely registered as Helane helped her slide to the ground. The candidate slumped, eye closed and taking deep deliberate breaths. Deep breaths fixed everything. That was what mama had always said.

Tokki
He was taking an awful chance, he knew, of not Impressing -- but Candidates were injured, and Tokki was still a Healer, and he couldn't stand by and not do something. Finally forcing himself to move, he ran through the crowd of his fellow Candidates to the Healer tables in the rear of the Hatching Ground chamber, near the entrance to the Infirmary. The location was apparently customary, and made good sense; they'd been told where the tables would be for just such an event. Tokki never dreamed he'd actually need to use that information.

"I'm a Healer, I can help," he told the first person he saw, and was directed toward where the wounded Candidates were being brought. Some of them had gotten off lucky in light of Crucio's murderous rampage, but others... hadn't. Blood mixed with green ichor was splattered over the white robes they wore, most of which were in various states of tatters. It was a gory mess of a scene, but Tokki had seen worse, treating people who'd gotten scored by that first dreadful Threadfall two Turns ago.

As he watched, a girl was brought in, her robes soaked with blood; she was walking, but barely, and was being half-carried by a tall, strong-looking girl. "Bring her here!" he called. "I'm a Healer, I'll take care of her." Another girl scampered up to help, and Tokki waved the lot toward an empty table near him.

Before he could do anything, though, a senior healer pointed at him. "YOU! Candidate! Back on the sands!"

"But I wanted to help-"

"We have it under control. Now go back out there and get your dragon!"

Blinking, Tokki did as he was told, trudging back out across the sands to his spot. He'd wanted to help, he really did; and it did look like the Healers were going to be overwhelmed soon. But orders were orders, and he didn't want to get in trouble.

Niika - EGG BETTING TRACKING

She couldn't look away - not out of horror, but out of anger. Yet her expression remained one of mute disinterest. There was no way that one of those idiots - especially with out Amortentia had been acting - hadn't been the cause of this bloodbath and...Shards, was that boy dead?

There was more than carnage. There was death now, and for a moment it almost seemed as if that muted paled green would perhaps still between under her brother's wing. But she seemed to recover her color, calling out to one of her rampaging sisters and drawing her to a stop...but that other green - the one that hadn't been stopped by the presence of the bronze from Fianth's clutch...it was still mad and there was still blood to have.

Le’x and brown Kratoth
Speaking of cousins, Le’x was in the stands, watching in horror as green Sectumsempra rampaged into the crowd of candidates. On her way through she lit into Karone, knocking him down and out of the boy’s sight. Le’x stood up so fast that he nearly went over the rail, shouting, “KAR!” at the top of his lungs.

Karou
The tall man was jostled hard as other candidates moved away from the hatchlings or were knocked into each other, almost to the point of falling a few times. He was lucky in that he was otherwise untouched. The adrenaline was making his heartbeat pulse in his temples, but he wasn’t panicked in the least. More annoyed than anything. Perhaps the infants would calm down if the fardling candidates would calm down first!

He jerked toward the sound of his name being shouted from somewhere in the stands by a decidedly masculine voice. But he didn’t know anyone in this Weyr… did he? He squinted, trying to make out faces in the somewhat dimmer outer rims of the cavern.

Karone
Karone went down hard, nearly choking on the sand as it filled his mouth. The green hatchling’s weight was on him for but a second, then she was gone. When he sat up, spitting and coughing, a sharp pain in his ribs told him she might have cracked one, but he seemed to be mostly whole. A few deep scratches, but nothing too bad. He exhaled with a deep shudder, tears of relief stinging his eyes. It isn’t over yet, he reminded himself. He turned and waved to his cousin Le’x in the stands, letting him know he was still in one piece.
