Rixth

The hatchling's words only stung a little, for Rixth knew what he was and what he had run away from. I was given a choice in a different world. I have never claimed to be brave or to understand what it must be like to be confined to weyr life, but I do know those who stand here must be prepared for death. He nodded once, his eyes going fully yellow once more. I apologize.

I SAID STOP JUDGING HER! the Expelliarmus dragonet roared, half-turning to cast a disbelieving eye upon Veltanna. How could she be so callous to the girl? To Kiri, who only wanted to hold her brother? She's fine! He gave That Bronze another push, snarling with righteous anger.

To Rixth... Apologize to her. As for your choice, you have that choice daily... and continue to choose cowardice while your brothers and sisters perish to save your hide.

Veltanna started at the voice in her head and then glared back. “I will judge her until the end of time if it keeps her alive.” The bronze was admirable for his actions but that didn’t mean the baby dragon could do everything. Someone was going to need to move the body and Veltanna didn’t think that baby could do that and deal with the other bronze.

Frustration lashed through his whole body as if the dragon that had attacked him were attacking all over again. They thought he was telling them to leave him and go away? No, he had just wanted them to back up so that they'd be away from the carnage but... Riz tried to heave a sigh and realized that he couldn't quite suck in enough air to do so, instead simply pushing down the desire to say something lest he move his jaw once more. He was half certain it was broken but he didn't want to test it until a healer could take a look at it.

So it was with a sober expression on his shredded face that he watched his best friend make her way back over, limping each step as if it pained her and he could see the bloom of blood that was spreading despite what she'd tied over it. Her words filled him with.... something akin to comfort as he'd been taught well enough to know that he should sit, but rather than acknowledge in any way that he was going to follow that order he simply growled deep in his throat at her. Rizdax hadn't missed the blood on Shar's back, she'd left him, gone beyond his reach, and come back wounded for it. Of course he wasn't mad, but frustration was filling him anyway as the edges of his vision seemed to darken just a tad.

Not a good sign at all.

Things were not looking good, there were bodies, there were candidates much younger lying in puddles of their own blood like.... like... As if by a twist of unfortunate fate he was back in that same stone hall watching his brother be eaten alive by thread, a puddle of blood as he screamed, unable to do anything. Right eye widening enough that even his left eye opened, blurred with blood though it was, to stare at what he thought he was seeing all over again. The nightmare that he tried to escape from each night and by working as hard as he could each day to avoid thinking about anything else. about his past. It was there again. He almost opened his mouth to shout out his brother's name but he knew on some level that he wasn't there anymore, these were sands with baby dragons. Nimueh, he needed to talk to Nimueh soon was all Rizdax could bother to think as his brain blanked in cold desperation to not broadcast his trauma to any already upset baby dragons. He was walking a tricky path down towards the darkness of numb unfeeling when he felt something that drug him back up out of it a bit.

It was actually the spread of mint across his tongue, though it seemed to mix with the coppery taste of blood that had spread over it, which brought him back to himself. "We love you." echoed in his head as the mint faded from his tongue and a tear of frustration ran down his face, lost in the blood that was still oozing there. This wasn't the time to deal with feelings, though he had no real control over when he felt them exactly, but he could staunch them down and so he reached out his left hand to grab at Shar's arm even though he couldn't see her well through the blood running around and into his left eye. His right arm stretched out to cover the others behind him carefully.

That moment of trauma had cost him his surroundings and as he took stock it was with both horror still and a mix of happiness. Despite all that was happening, it seemed as though two dragonets had still managed to find their partners.

If only that tide of good could continue, if only candidates, himself included just now, could learn to control themselves....

SOUI

It happened all so fast she couldn't react. It was as though one blink of her eyes had Orri at her side, all of them talking and thinking about what was to come, and as soon as she blinked again he was down on the sands, bleeding from a dragonet attack. Before she could respond to that Dehka was moving and then he too was hit and down and Soui's mind screamed at her from six different directions. She needed to keep calm, she wanted to panic, Dehka was hurt, how had this happened, Orri!!, and then it all went silent.

"Dehka, don't move him and don't move yourself. It's not going to help and there's a chance you'll both get hurt worse." Her voice was oddly calm for her absolutely pale her face was and the sound of ripping fabric quickly followed her words. The teen well understood that healers would be coming to get people as soon as they could, provided they didn't die out on the sands, but that didn't mean she couldn't help where she was. Basic first aid would hurt no one and could perhaps save someone. Before this dream of being a candidate happened she was a healer in training after all, a proud apprentice who learned from a trauma-based journeyman.

She was trained for this, even if her mind was screaming and her hands were shaking. The last bit of her sleeve came off with enough tugging and rapidly she pressed it against Dehka's face, putting as much pressure as she could with both hands; one was holding the cloth against the wound and the other to the back of his head so there was enough force. "Are you able to hold this? Can you put pressure?" How was she functioning like this, trying to keep it together when her instincts told her that she needed to go and find better help? It was so much safer to get away, the Candidatemasters had told them, but Soui could not do that.

She would rather die than not help someone. There was nothing else she would rather do more. Her path, her choices. No mistakes, none, she was here to help and she was going to help.

With her sleeve off and her hands moving Dehka's own so he could keep pressure, she offered as much of a smile as possible to help with nerves. Her own mostly, this was downright terrifying, but also those the others might be feeling. "I'm here, I won't let you go. I'm going to help you both, just as you tried to help me. I'm here." Soui's hands were shaking though and she tried to turn to Orri only to find herself sucking in air at the sight of him. He was...so torn up, having tried to save her. His words had even been for Dehka to get her to safety, and Soui swallowed hard as she gingerly reached to inspect what was going on.

"O...Orri? Can you hear me?" He had to still be alive. He had to. "I...I'm going to try and help you until the healers get here." Even if she sounded calm, even if she wasn't shaking as much outwardly as she was inwardly, Soui was absolutely terrified.

He's not a body! Expelliarmus ground out. He lived. He was loved. He was somebody! How can you keep thinking of him that way?

Amila and Green Matoath

It was an unfamiliar feeling, on a level -- Amila knew love and then there was this feeling.

Moments before another candidate came and began to tirade -- the words... Weren't entirely wrong. Amila knew she was stupid but she'd been so worried, and panic and shame and guilty were beginning to raise the panic in her chest and bring her mind back to dark places she'd thought left--

And then the unfamiliar, but pure, warm feeling that washed over her before Something Strongher, a sensation in her mind that reached for the fear and panic and wiped away atthem as Ielin wiped blood from his face, her terror ebbing as she felt something brush her legs, looking into the rainbow whorling eyes of the green whom charged -- charged to her rescue, -- the single most kind, generous, loving green in all of Pern, and the green reached, booping her rider gently with her snout in a gesture of love and protection, and moved, turning around before her.gaze returned to Haveli, the dragonet hissing sharply in warning -- her rider blinking again slowly before reaching to place a hand on Matoath.

Her dragon. Her dragon. Anakumath's judgement befoire... Seemed to actually make more sense now, Amila blinking thoughtfully. It would have indeed been awfully far for dear, precious Makoath to walk, and the girl was immediately thinking the green might consider moving for the feeding table -- she was hungry, but Makoath was having none of it. Eyes of blue ande green for her rider were still quite blood red and scathing for the wretch daying to speak so hatefully near Hers and Amila looked to Makoath before Haveri, swallowing a moment as she felt the dragonet urging her gently, seeming to know there was work to do.

"It's not... Your p-place to judge...Judge either." Amila said, voice shaking. Makoath mentally leaned into her lovingly, and Amila looked towards the chaos, suddenly aware that it WAS awful.... But she....

"I didn't know she would get scared and I can't control the babies. So just... Go away, you horrible person!"

It was something, but by her side, Makoath hissed again, pressing back to protect Hers warningly, Amila looking briefly to Ielin -- was he okay too? Haveri wasn't on him was she?

HAVELI

There was a long, low scoff from a woman who probably knew better. "You may have Impressed and become a rider, but no one here will forget what you've done." Haveli wasn't about to be intimidated by a dragonet, nor by a woman who could barely do anything on her own. "Go ahead and celebrate your bond - Faranth knows there's a dead boy and dying candidates who won't get to experience that thanks to your running and screaming at an already terrified dragonet." Haveli's words continued like a rain of blows, uncaring and unflinching, but the smile stayed on her face like a sickening mask. "You caused all of this and can tell yourself as many times as you want, with your ~beloved~ reassuring you, that you didn't, but we know. But again, go celebrate. It's your day, after all, so I'll leave the rest of Pern to do the judging for me."

With that, Haveli was done. She feigned a bow like the kind people were to give to dragon riders before turning on her heels, not bothering to look back.

Karou
Dragonets were fighting, wandering around, making Impression, and one bronze was just… poised, prim and pretty as a feline. Candidates were running and shuffling and crying and trying to tell each other what to do. He was starting to feel a little sick. The heat, the stress, the smell. But only a little. He remained standing straight and tall. Heh. Prim and pretty, rather. Amid the chaos, Karou continued to steal glances at the stands, occasionally making eye contact with Yunara as he did so. She seemed to be getting more and more concerned, judging by her body language. He couldn’t blame her. She didn’t really know anyone here, either. If he were to be mauled…

Had he misheard the name “Kar” being yelled across the cavern a few minutes ago? Probably. At any rate, for all he knew it could be the name or nickname of any candidate down there with him. Still, something made him keep his eyes peeled. As candidates nearby milled about, a space opened up for him to slip through. He moved several weaverlengths (further away from the current carnage sites, of course) and took up a new vantage point. There were lots of new faces in the stands over there, and he gave each one a fleeting look whenever he felt it was safe enough to spare them.

His eyes roved over one section of the stands, then suddenly doubled back. He was hard to see clearly from there, but there was a boy—something about his attentive posture seemed somehow familiar. He squinted. Brown hair? A roundish nose...

...Lenix?

Weyrling Makimton and Green Zygmuth

Zygmuth swallowed hastily then belatedly remembered she could talk whilst eating. She opened her mouth for more, but let her eyes whirl a happy blue at Anakumath. He is perfect Anakumath! His name is Makimton, but he’ll need to shorten that of course. He asks a lot of interesting questions. Tell me about your rider! She peered curiously at the woman feeding her golden sister.

Candidate Nalacko she/her

Everything was calm and proceeding smoothly. She looked away for just a moment and pandemonium broke loose. Nala clapped her hands over her mouth as she shrieked in terror as Avada Kedavra bronze grabbed a male candidate and shook him. When the dragon dropped him to the sands, there was a chilling stillness about the body. The Tea dragons were nothing like this!

To top it off green Sectumsempra decided to join the carnage. She attacked and wounded several candidates. Her green sister Crucio also joining the mayhem. Nala pressed herself as close behind Rizdax as possible. She sobbed into her hands. It was so hard to hear Riz through all the screaming, but eventually she got the idea to back up a little.

Nala finally pulled her face from her hands and noticed the bright red splashes forming tiny pools in front of her valiant protector. Riz was hurt! “Riz? Riz, you need to see the healers.” She couldn’t exactly see what injuries he’d taken, but that much blood loss couldn’t be good. Nala eyed Shar as she rejoined the group, also bleeding. “You should too.”

Avada Kedavra
The dragon continued to watch the boys with a critical eye, shifting on his perch, periodically letting his claws dig in and out. If he were a feline, he might well be kneading. Still, he looked about the the fleeing, screaming, shrieking Candidates, giving a small judgmental snort now and then as one passed by. Oh, there were some who still admired him; some who were stronger, some who were weaker, some who were.... not worth a second glance. He could feel a boy thinking at him, practically willing him to look over but... He did not and would not.

Not for someone so...

Worthless.

Ah, but then something caught his eye. Someone. Not His, but a girl a... Ha. The clutchmate of the mound he stood upon. The dragon turned to stare at the girl, eyes whirling red. She didn't back down, though, and actually had the gall to try to command him off.

How..amusing.

But she wasn't worth his time. Even as she begged those of golden hide, he pointedly yawned, did another little knead, before turning back to look at--

Oooph!

That One suddenly came screaming into the fray, throwing himself at him. The bronze dragon gave a surprised hiss because he was not finished!. All he needed was a few moments of observation more and yet... Snarling, he turned to snap at Expelliarmus, feeling his weight get thrown. In fact, the bronze dragon had no choice but to retreat a few steps, getting forced back and away by the righteous wrath of the other.

If a dragon could roll his multi-faceted eyes, this one certainly would have. Instead, giving one more yawn, while the brown snarling dragon continued its tirade, Avada Kedavra decided he'd had quite enough of that. While Expelliarmus was having some sort of trantrum, the bronze simply walked off. He removed himself from the body, and instead stared at him.

Karou. I grow tired of these fools. Come to your Cadereth, and let us get a better look at our Weyr. My favored siblings will join us once they have finished with their games. He walked away from Kiri, the corpse, and his brother as if they were nothing; but as far as this bronze was concerned, they were nothing. He was too busy looking towards the future, His future, to worry about those, and the senseless chaos, he left behind.

Martirae and Gold Anakumath

Oh he sounds quite wonderful, Zygmuth. I would love to hear about him any time you want to share more, whether it was some of those questions Makimton asked, or just a general want to talk, Anakumath wouldn't consider it a bother in the least. She looked up at Martirae when she was asked after, resting her head back in the woman's lap with an affectionate creel. What? Marty looked down at Anakumath, brows raised slightly - enough to give the default look of severity a curious edge to it. She was struck again by how lovely and perfect of a being she was, and perhaps that flush of emotional praise was what got the gold all bashful for a moment.

But of course, she had to find a proper answer to that question. My Martirae is a lot of things. Hardworking, strong. She is good. Of course, they all sounded like the boasts of a dragon infatuated with their one and only.

Ielin - High Reaches Candidate

He stands a bit awkwardly, his unharmed shoulder cocked out like somehow he might be ready to throw himself in harm’s way once more. Hatchings could be violent, but before this double clutch, he’d only suffered sunburn and a concussion from the beach hatching. Yet Ielin grits his teeth slightly, watching the dragon babies movement as he absently tries to flex his fingers, pleased when they flexed--at least a tiny bit. Expelliarmus’ bellow of rage at Avada Kedavra makes his heart swell, for the bronze to be so brash to stand up for what’s right no matter the circumstances? That was bravery.

He was about to turn and comment to Amila on the matter -- when another candidate’s voice caught his attention. A touch familiar, though he had never had contact with Haveli directly. He turns, ready to wedge himself between two candidates if need be -- but a dragonet does it for him. His eyebrows shot straight up, and he takes a step back as the familiar form of Colors of the Wind came to defend.. Amila. He can’t help but smile at the rainbow in her eyes -- for the time he’d spent with her egg at the touching, at the cool, calm, collected state she’d left him in after that day -- he knew his new friend would be in good hands.

Yet as Amila defended herself and Haveli leaves, Ielin turns to his new friend and gives a slight smile -- he’s unused to the action, though he is happy. “I’ll be okay. Congrats -- go get her fed? I’ll be happy t’ really meet the lovely lady later.” He can shrug off the pain, just so that Amila and her newly bonded would be safe.

Tuelarua - High Reaches Candidate

Tuelarua would have never considered herself at harm’s doorstep, yet there’s an odd fluttering in her stomach as she waits for her companion to come back to himself. He was safe and present, and she’d recalled conversations of threadfall survivors from the first fall that she’d swept people away with when they got trapped in memories. Yet she meets his gaze with no fear, only gentle worry, concern. Crucio’s mental attack had hurt, yet she fears he had taken a brunter hit.

But it's as he turns away from her and the other candidate, crossing the sands away from her, away from the other candidate as well, that Tue finds herself truly a bit.. lost. It's an odd sense that settled in her heart, watching him stride away, that she barely reaches a hand into the space in front of her. Not to grab him back, more as if she could grab at some missed opportunity, something she hadn’t found in the aftermath of the green’s wake. She’d found comfort in his presence, like a protector in a way. Despite whispers, she hadn’t found his company offputting, merely.. quiet, but good. Now that he was gone...

… But she wasn’t actually alone still, even if it felt like it.

Tuela turned to look at the candidate he had hit, brows furrowed in gentle concern as she looked over his jaw. “Are you okay? Do you want to head to the healers..?” She’d escort him, if need be. It was the least she could do…
