M'llin reached for their firestone store, his stomach dropping a touch when he found it empty. It presented no real difficulty to get more, he simply thought he had been keeping better track.
It probably had a hole. Don't worry yourself, mine.

Probably. He was about to ask Pravdath to request another bag when an older rider on a zippy little green flew past, tossing him exactly what he had been thinking of.
Let's—
Once again, M'llin didn't have to speak. He saw the Thread and Pravdath avoided it, blinking above the spot where they had been. The man pat at his dragon's neck, peering through the dark in tense silence.

Pravdath knew that the reach of his flame wasn't anything to brag about, and he had gone to great lengths to find ways to make up for it. It was therefore quite a shock to the blue when he misjudged the distance between himself and an errant clump of Thread and flamed it away easily, even though it was farther than he'd ever managed before.
What was in that firestone?
We can accomplish great feats under duress, I suppose. We should make another practice attempt when we return to High Reaches, if we are allowed.

[Moderate Damage -5 HP. You are now flying with a Painful status effect. This will negate your next immediate rolls XP and double damage if the roll includes set damage (or has you roll for damage).
Another tangle of Thread appeared, and unfortunately, neither rider nor dragon saw it until it was too late! "Ven!" The woman tried to warn, but the brown wasn't as agile as some of his wingmates, and his bulk meant he could do little but take it. With the light so low, it took Zyamel another moment to figure out where to send her brown--but the extreme cold of Between stopped the Thread from chewing more into her brown.
When they reappeared, he gave a small growl of irritation. For all that he talked a big game--even he was beginning to tire of so many scores. Still, he would not complain; such was his lot, his due, and by hitting him it meant the queen's below needn't deal with it.
But that satisfaction didn't stop the stinging.
Zyamel was worried. He already had wounds that were being tested, and the numbweed from earlier was beginning to wear off.

A strong gust of wind suddenly pushes you off course and right into a sliver of Thread! If you're a bronze or brown, you or your dragon take a scathing hit, unable to get out of the way. [Minor Damage -3 HP]
Unfortunately, the wind was unkind, and Venandith's struggles were only getting worse. Though he struggled to correct himself, his wings once again fell victim to a nearby patch of Thread. Snarling in rage, the brown dragon's usually cool and confident temper flared.
We're going back to get you patched up--and don't say a word about it! Zyamel ordered. Instead of staying in the fight, she returned to the High Reaches bowl. Though her pride stung, she wasn't going to risk Venandith's life. Soon--too soon--they'd be back to face down the last hour. Better to leave the Wing at low-altitude than back up high.
[Heading to the Weyrbowl to patch up.]

Z'tir frowned slightly. Of late Siloth had had quite a swift, long flame. This was abnormal for the bronze, as impressive as his flaming technique normally was.

When Thread scored Siloth's neck it was painful enough for them both. But then the Thread wrapped around Z'tir's bad leg, and it was all the bronzerider could do to keep in a howl of pain. We are returning to the Weyrbowl, Siloth informed the Wing, for he knew that this injury must be looked at.

So eager to do his duty, Nyenyezith flamed too soon--but instead of watching the Thread slip through, it was turned to harmless ash. I didn't know you had that in you! K'vah gently teased, reaching down to thump His against his neck.
The blue gave a snort, but let his eyes whirl bright blue in a moment's pleasure. I am a fighting dragon, remember.
