It was a sad affair. Where once they had been nothing except bubbling with excitement and pride, now there was sadness and fear. Blundarth brought Vimiath many things to try and please her, but it seemed nothing could bring joy to the gold while her rider lay sick. Betweening all over to find her the best kills, only staying away while he knew someone else would be nearby. Blundarth had taken up a quiet vidgil, ceasing his constant questions, but not leaving her side. Vimiath did not want affection as she had before and, although it made him sad, he respected that. The bronze often parked himself so that nobody could enter the hatching cavern without squeezing past his bulk, just to make sure that nobody would bother her without a good reason. He tried to be as unobtrusive as one of his size could be, softly speaking to their eggs, carefully padding around only when absolutely necessary. Usually it would be torture for Blundarth to stay still so long, but the sight of Vimiath's dulling hide and sad gaze successfully stilled the dragon. Even K'tor had noticed that the dragon had begun to whisper in their communications. As though he were afraid even their private conversations might disturb her.

Today he was not blocking the way in, lying a short distance behind Vimiath, his body curled protectively around her and the clutch as best it could be without him touching and bothering her. Vimiath rose and his scarred head shot up, tilting to watch as she gently moved between the clutch. Tentatively he reached out to see if the egg was distressed, but he felt nothing of fear or upset. Vimiath took up her hum and Blundarth too rose to his feet. He paced closer, settling into a slightly hunched pose nearer Vimiath. A deep rumble began in his chest as he joined her welcoming song. He positioned himself on her left, so the his one eye could regard her with a slowly swirling mix of blue and purple. His eyes often took this shade when watching the gold. Even through this he adored her and was devoted completely to her. Tentatively he reached out his mind to hers, gentle enough that she could easily reject the mental touch if she wanted. Blundarth had never been good with words, so he offered up his devotion, how proud he was of both her and the clutch, how wonderful these beings that she had brought into the world were, the way his hearts swelled now as the time finally came for them to know the deepest of loves. Blundarth wanted to nuzzle her, to spread his wing around her and provide comfort, but he could not presume. He would never risk upsetting Vimiath further by pestering her with contact she did not want.

His gaze swung down as, just on the edge of his vision, he saw an egg give a determined shake. The egg split swiftly and the first of their children was born. Blundarth's hum rose in volume, sending a vibration through the sand, he forced what he could see into K'tor's mind as the man rushed on foot to the cavern. Joy as he had never felt before surged in Blundarth even as the bronze screeched and looked rather menacing. It didn't matter to him, the bronze could have broken out rushed forward and bit him and Blundarth still would have thought that he was perfect in every way. The dragon was so enraptured by the newborn dragon that others entering the cavern went completely unnoticed by him. It wasn't until Demon made his confident start towards the candidates that Blundarth looked up and realised there were now many more minds in here than had been a moment ago. How long had he been staring. His eye flicked to the stands, immediately picked out K'tor sitting near the front. Worry on his face as he nervously bounced his legs up and down as he watched the newborn dragon. Blundarth did not share his fears. This hatchling was perfect, they would find their perfect match he was certain of it.

V'kenti and Takarath

V'kenti had been...excited about the upcoming hatching so when the call was finally made that it was time AND an egg had already hatched before anybody could rush the candidates onto the sands made him jump up just as fast as Lestenna had. They'd talked about the candidate exchange numerous times and both were hoping for the best of this clutch while at the same time any candidates that would impress at western would be missed.

The first egg had already hatched and it had been a bronze, it was off to a good start. Takarath was on Uridith's ledge just about as fast as V'kenti could call for him. "Of course, we're always ready." An air of confidence surrounded him, he liked to say he was aways ready. He strode quickly over to his desk and picked up a journal and writing utencils. V'kenti was certainly going to be making notes throughout the hatching, always one to make something one might do for pleasure into work. He jumped onto Takarath's back with ease and raised his eyebrows at Lestenna, "Ready?"

<Ready?> Takarath asked Uridith as well.

Vesin and brown Kelilayth

Vesin jumped when Kelilayth started humming and told her it was time. She was supposed to be meeting Vosin there to watch everything unfold together. "Keli, tell Killa we'll be there shortly and to have Vos save room!" Kelilayth rumbled happily and did as he was asked. <"Killakeeth, my twin would like to let you and yours know we are on our way and to save room!"> Vesin wondered if she shouldn't think about sitting with her wing but surely they'd understand. And if T'mor or A'iel needed her they knew all they had to do was get in touch with Keli. She secretly hoped that A'iel's little friend impressed after all the drama at the touching. Once they landed, Vesin searched for Vos and Killa to have an idea of where to go.

Candidate Varinia

Varinia rushed along with the other candidates to get on the stands. She was shoving her feet in her sandles just before she stepped onto the burning sands. The state of Vimiath saddened her, but tried to keep her thoughts positive since they had been told the eggs would feed off negative emotions and could between. And judging by how the touching went, Vari was very concerned about it.

__________________________________________________________

Candidate Rennati:
It was a shock to get such a sudden summons, the last hatching she had stood for they'd had a little bit more time. But apparently one had already hatched!! She rushed to get ready and then jumped onto one of the transport dragons and then ran onto the stands. She stood back by another girl with red hair. "Vimiath looks like she's in rough shape, doesn't she?" She was sad but commented to Varinia anyway.

Henwas and Huarwar

The twins eyes stayed on the bronze as he moved. Henwas noting how the metallic baby seemed to like to swagger and get as much attention as he could. He had not have the chance to touch that egg so he turned his head to look at Huarwar for a moment. "Didn't you spend some time at that egg?" The other boy nodded his head as he watched the dragonet. "I did. I am not surprised it is a bronze, it was very strong and promised power if you told it your dreams. Though I think he told that to everyone who touched it."

That revelation wasn't one that seemed to surprise Henwas, he had done the same many a time to others. Perhaps that was why Huarwar had been able to pick up on it so easily. The older twin watched his brother for a moment before his eyes moved back to look at the eggs. Like always there was a wonder of what would happen if either he or Huarwar impressed without the other. He was sure he would do fine but, he worried about Huarwar being left along without his protection. Henwas' brow furrowed with worry some before he let his attention move back to the eggs just as Huarwar's had, though a voice speaking to him and Huarwar made his eyes narrow.

The twins both turned their head to look at Kiri and while Huarwar smiled at her and waved, Henwas glowered some. "Good luck to you as weil Kiri." Huarwar replied back to her as she moved on her way, easily ignoring Henwas' look and prodding his twins attention back to the eggs at hand.

Skylla kept herself busy making sure everything would be ready for the newly impressed weyrlings when they made their way off the sands. She paused to glance back out there at the candidates, her eyes taking in the swaggering bronze as he moved before them, taking his time in making his decision. It was hard not to look at Vimiath, though, and not worry about the Queen. She didn't know what had caused Vimiath to snap as she had, almost attacking a candidate but she couldn't hold it against the queen either, this entire touching seemed strange.

Neith was perched anxiously among some of the other dragons, her eyes whirling a mixture of yellow and blue. There was happiness at the new lives hatching from the eggs but worry for the golden queen. While Vimiath had never been an overly attached mother, Neith had always done her own best to keep in some form of contact with the gold. It was nice when you had family to rely upon, she had learned that from Skylla and Tyra.

Mother, the first hatchling is wonderful." Her words were tenative as she reached out to the gold, the new bronze was marvelous and seemed so sure of himself that Neith knew her mother would be proud. I hope you are feeling somewhat better mother. Please, if you need anything, I am here to help, as you did when I was just an egg.

When Jacqoul waved to him, P'tius could only weakly wave back. "She's going to die down there..."

Nemo let out a long sigh, rubbing his face. "Do you want to move closer? That's an option, and you can be in a better position to get to her if something DOES happen. Not that I'm worried much, we've got a bunch of healers here."

"Only Western would have a bunch of healers like this..."

Eyes narrowing, Nemo turned to P'tius, "What's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't even know! I'm nervous! I think I might throw up..."

Please do NOT.

"Look, a bronze hatched first, that's good luck, so stop worrying." Nemo got up, then tugged on P'tius, "Now come on, let's move closer so your worries can be... Relaxed... Damn you're tall."

P'tius blinked at Nemo, frowning. "What, did you think I was short? With these long legs?" He started down the stands, moving with the greenrider to a closer spot so he could better watch his sister. "Are you missing some part of your brain there?"

Nemo only shook his head, taking a new seat.

To Jacomus, every day now felt like dressing fancy, and really... He couldn't say he was complaining at all. He was just preparing for dinner when the humming had started, particularly from Fish and Marsh, who had each taken up a shoulder. Their eyes were flashing in blue and purple as they vibrated and hummed, looking up in the direction of the hatching grounds. "Oh, are the eggs hatching?"

Come, J'musmine! We must attend! The dragon, peeking into the weyr, blinked, then lifted his head. Where is C'garyours? Should he not come, too?

C'garhis... Jacomus let out an amused little snort, then carefully extracted both flits from his shoulders. "He's got other business to attend to, don't worry. If he's going to make it, he will. Come on, you two, no flits on the hatching sands, rule at every Weyr." Which, it had been a particular challenge at Southern, that he'd seen. The continent had been absolutely full of flits and keeping them away from the Sands had proved damn near impossible. Only when a protective queen roared at them did they usually scatter away between for the duration of the hatching.

Fish and Marsh, to their credit, looked at him with some sadness to have to sit it out, but otherwise went to... Who knew where, honestly. So long as it wasn't the Sands...

Walking out to Kraketh, Jacomus climbed on, "Onward to the sands!"

The dragon let out a happy bugle, taking flight. He rose up the caldera and followed many dragons into the cave. When he found a spot, he let his rider down, then hobbled to meet some of the other dragons of not only Western Weyr, but other Weyrs.

Jacomus shook his head, smiling, then started to find a spot. When he saw Jacqoul, he had to stop. Well... Not the only member of the family to wind up at Western... He'd have to send a letter to P'tius crowing about it, after he admitted he'd finally returned to Weyrlife. Two for a much freer Weyr!

“That’s lucky,” Resa said, watching the bronze cross the sands. She always loved watching the hatchlings, whether they be Lyraeth’s or another gold’s. They were precious.

“It’s hard to imagine Eorawth so small,” she said, and smiled to her love. “He certainly grew.” She reached and stroked the bronze’s nose as he nudged Z’haq.

“I’m worried about Talela,” she said, gazing at Vimiath. Her smile had dropped. “Poor Vimiath.”

Serfie did not want to be here, she'd been bribed, educated, even offered a somewhat strained friendship among other candidates but she didn't feel like she truly belonged ANYWHERE really, her nightmares after the touching had faded to every couple of days but she still had them, she didn't trust anyone ... except maybe A'iel, especially since he'd gotten her the two young flits currently sprawled at the table, waiting for the evening meal, one of the only good things about being .. legitimate, drudges ate but usually after everyone else, and not always the best, but she did not like the curves beginning to show on her body, small that they were, her old shirts had to go as they didn't fit her very well, unless she pulled them tightly, in fact all her old clothes had gone, while they were 'only' clothes to most people, they'd been HERS ... yes she was provided with comfortable, fitting, warmer clothing that was true but a lot of the pleasure in obtaining them was gone when they were just ... given to her. She was getting slow and dull ... at least she thought so, most anyone else would see was the same old on edge, nervy Serfie who always had a knife on her, except she wasn't supposed to, she hid it in her boot.

When her flits started to hum she didn't click right away what was happening until murmurs spread around the room, the eggs! they were hatching. Serfie felt like she was going to be sick... she shuddered and clutched her flits tight but knowing from her lessons they wouldn't be allowed, she sent them ahead to Nasath, he'd probably be watching the hatching, or at least A'iel would be there, her 'babies' would be safe with the Bronze and his Rider. Herself however, she dragged her feet, even with A'ral yelling, she would go in her OWN time, feeling forced as it was, she rebelled in the only way she could without breaking her promises. She left her knife behind, despite her best judgement, she knew if caught with it on the Sands, she'd be risking her LIFE, let alone her relationships, fragile as they were. She donned the white robes at a snail's pace before walking out towards the sands, pausing to visit the latrines once, emptying what little there was left in her stomach, before shakily heading out, head up, pretending like she belonged ... pretending like she hadn't just thrown up in her anxiety about this whole business.

She eyed the girl who had almost been eaten with some sympathy, they seemed to feel very similar on this whole Hatching thing, however unlike the girl, Serfie had no one close by that she felt a connection enough to be comforted and her stomach twisted at the sight of the other girl, drawing some from the candidatemaster, holding his hand like a child, but she didn't think less of the girl, not one bit. She shuddered again when seeing the small bronze strutting about like HE owned the place, well technically he did, until his siblings hatched anyway, he was the sole focus of almost all the boys, and some girls, Serfie however didn't pay him very much attention, she was too busy trying not to throw up as she manoeuvred herself into a position away from the eggs but among the candidates so she wouldn't get into trouble, all the while looking out for Nasath or A'iel ..... were they here...? the closest thing Serfie had to any family, she hoped they were here... She stood, fighting the scared shuddering and the anxious feelings making her feel glad she hadn't eaten anything since the morning meal.

because she's really hoping A'iel is there and already watching... XD

Farellen was in the dining area when the humming started, he was instantly on his feet, running to the changing rooms and donning his white garb. He slowed up once he hit the entrance to the Sands, the sight of Vimiath shocking him to his core... she looked awful, like she'd given up already, like Talela was ... gone ... but that couldn't be, She'd have keened surely? he'd tried getting information on her condition but as he wasn't family, or even very close to her at all, all he was told was that she was .. stable... whatever that meant, but judging from how Vimiath was looking, she was far from it. He prayed to Faranth and the ancestors that Talela pulled through, that she got to see Vimiath's babies with her own eyes, healthy and well again.

He blinked eyes that were prickling with tears, wiping his face with a hand and heading out with the other candidates, with the other boys. While he didn't particularly hope for any colour, he rather admired this Bronze, (how lucky! Bronze hatching first was great luck, perhaps the only thing greater would have been a Gold hatching first and Impressing quickly) He smiled as he watched the little fellow strutting his stuff, and why not he thought, he belonged, he was first, why shouldn't he get all the attention ... while he could get it.

Onasta & Jibasth/Nicara & Diesteth

Two riders sat watching the sunset with klah grasped in hands and laughter bubbling from deep within them. Onasta had been regaling her best friend with the recent antics of her wing and the flights they had taken, if she was also trying to pull information from Yokohama's quietest rider then she should be forgiven. The dark haired searchrider had been busy looking for possible Candidates to fill the sands when Vimiath's clutch finally broke free of their shells. Truth be told the redhead was curious as to the nature of those she had found, there had been short stories of a tall girl who's temper rivaled Onasta's own and the mention of a Harper.

About to try and pull more information from her, the hum of their dragons caused both women to twist quickly in their direction. Despite the size difference, both dragons cut splendid forms in the twilight, standing with their heads turned upward towards the Weyr and the Sands.

Vimiath's first has broken free of it's shell with no Candidates on the sands!

There are whispers that it is bronze!

Looking at one another with shock evident in their very different faces, Onasta and Nicara slammed down the last of their klah and yanked on their wherhide jackets in a rush of limbs. To miss this would be foolish, to miss this might mean missing the last clutch the small gold ever hatched! Nicara had kept her eyes on the sands during recent flights and nothing she had to report was good, the queen faded more and more each day as her rider stayed in the Healers halls. Would Vimiath Between when the last dragonet broke free? There was no way to know.

Leaping onto the backs of their dragons, the four beat a path to the stands. As they spiraled in for a landing two sets of blue eyes looked down at the group already gathering and Onasta let a grin creep onto her face as she instructed her immense brown to land. Jibasth's massive bulk slipped in beside Diesteth's as the two dragons landed, the blue choosing a spot beside Vorzeth, offering a bugle to his wingmate in the process.

A look of despair was all Nicara could muster as she slid off her blue and stared out onto the sands.

"Be safe!" though it was forceful it came out of Nicara's throat in a squeaking whisper and Onasta clapped the stressed rider's back in sympathy before offering a welcoming wave to Yarala.

By the SHELLS, how had she been so late!? Finally in sandals and her white robe, the small redhead hurried out into the sands to stand with the others, looking at the marvel she'd seen several times. The bronze was strutting so confidently... how long had he been 'out' to clean up his movement? She glanced over the nest briefly to see where his egg had been, but kept in mind that Vimiath may have moved them since her visit last.

Blinking the awe from her eyes again, she sidled into line and replaced all her confusing thoughts with soft, gentle songs of calming, hoping almost to blend in with the hum of the dragons overhead. She tried not to think of the worry she had for gold Vimiath's graying hide, or what it meant for her rider. The woman had not been doing well, when last she skittered out of the sands with her head tucked close to her chest.

And after that talk with her candidatemaster, she had no intent of being in the way, or of doing anything particularly stupid.

~Z'haq and bronze Eorawth~

"He sure did grow," Z'haq replied with a laugh, reaching around to thump Eorawth on the neck. "He's a big boy now! Aren't you, dearest?"

I am as big as I need to be, Eorawth said almost smugly. It is not how big you are, it is what you do with your size that matters.

Z'haq laughed even harder. "That's my boy." His laughter faded and a grim expression crossed his face as Resa brought up her worries over Talela and Vimiath. "I've never seen a dragon look so awful, let alone one who was brooding a clutch." He sighed. "I'm really worried about Aunt Tally too. If she doesn't recover soon..." His voice trailed off, not mentioning the unthinkable; he figured Resa already knew what he was thinking.

Once she was on the sands with a chance to take a breath and gather herself Roana managed to pull her eyes away from the strutting bronze hatchling to look around. The poor queen, she looked ready to fade away. Rumor was the gold riders condition had not improved and the sight of the gold pretty much confirmed it. Roana would not voice it but the practical side of her said that she wouldn't last much longer. Maybe she was just holding on long enough for the eggs to hatch. It also went some way to explaining the dragons behavior during the touching.

Because she was quite lost in her musings Roana took close to a minute to notice Iathe silently come up beside her. It wasn't until she saw her outstretched hand from the corner of her eye that she thought to look round and see her.
The girl she had butted heads with on the sands previously. Instantly she bristled and her eyes narrowed, but after a second Roana decided she could read the look and the gesture better, it said 'we both ******** up, truce? Roana relaxed, took the offered hand and shook it. Truce.
"My name's Roana." She offered. It seemed like the thing to do. Truth be told she was just as happy to have a partner on the sands that might watch her back.

She might have tried further conversation but she heard her name called from her other side. "Kiri!" She returned the smile. Kiri was one of the only candidates she had managed to strike up a tentative friendship with in her brief stay. "Yea, Good luck. It seems to be going well so far. Bronze hatching first is meant to be lucky right?" She had a feeling that they shouldn't really be talking but the bronze was not going to bother with the female occupied side of the sands so she felt safe in exchanging a few words.

She twisted back to Iathe to assure the girl she hadn't forgotten her. "And this is better than the touching, we're not all spread out among the eggs now, if something does go wrong we can look out for each other" And she wanted Iathe to know, she was included in that sisterhood. "Just, don't be afraid and move if a dragon comes at you that isn't yours." she finished, mostly speaking to herself. Echoing back the candidate lessons to reaffirm them.

Candidate Gavryl
Gavryl's gaze met Cedarian's and he returned the formal nod with one of his own, a polite smile touching the edge of his lips. “Based on the reactions of people – and the shortness of the Touching – I would not be terribly surprised if decorum was an attribute that only manifests post-Impression. For example, this bronze is dawdling... decorum would indicate a propensity for propriety and etiquette wouldn't it? I would think the most proper – and efficient – thing to do would be to be find your partner and make your orderly way off the Sands. But alas.”

He shrugged, noticing that a number of candidates were collecting around the people he was lurking near and his nerves began to act up again. Falling quiet, the youth listened to what Dolmar had to say and noted the confident tone, the posture of the man... it was like he had some sort of field of influence that was collecting people. Interesting ability, and one Gavryl knew he did not possess. “You think the bronze has his mind made up? He looks like he's delaying to me... first to hatch and eager to see the Candidates, but less eager to actually bond with them? The parts don't agree – I would think a confident specimen like him would zero in his partner... Although, it did ask many questions at the Touching. Did you greet it before Vimiath nearly ate a candidate?”

Kieza was quiet for a time as she watched the Candidates gather on the sands, her eyes watching the queen as she hovered over the eggs protectively. The girl felt sympathy well within her at the poor queen - she must be so worried about her rider, but must remain with her eggs... All because of another Candidate's mishap in handling the eggs. She felt a shock of anger pierce her for a second, before she allowed it to cool in her mind. This was neither the time nor the place to allow anger to be present.

No... This was all the hatchlings time to shine and have undivided attention put upon them. Kieza was happy to do so, her gaze falling on the Bronze who strutted like a preening bird in front of all the white-garbed children.

At another Candidate's words, she turned her face toward Gavryl, her expression kind. "Perhaps the Bronze's chosen is not among us yet, maybe they have not arrived?" She said, her voice thoughtful. She had heard of instances where a hatchling would wait for it's chosen before venturing among the Candidates to seek them out.

Damon
Damon was just about to sit down to dinner he had work with the herdbeasts all day and was hungry so he had cleaned up early and was just about to eat when the humming started and reverberated deep in his chest. He paused halfway down concerned then he realized what the sound meant and reverses right out of the chair and headed in a controlled walk slash run to his room for his robes and sandals then rushed to the hatching groundd. He felt hallowed as he took his first steps onto the sand for the first time at a rral hatching not just a touching. He was so excited and to look up and see the bronze hide and the cracked derelict demon egg. Ahah! The demon had been a bronze that was just so cool!

Reenav
Reenav entered perfectly preened on Damons heels he knew that a dragon would wait for a certain amount of time to search the sands for theirs as they were so awkward it took them time to move around.

He looked good and felt great and was utterly surprised to see the demon hatchling out and about. He bowed to the queen and all the other nessesaries right after Damon and both boys arranged themselves in the boys area next to each other with a smallish space in between.
