From where it sat on the sands, Forbidden Forest...did nothing at all. It sat perfectly still in its sandy well.

Waiting.

Watching.

Sylfie and Hesperith
She'd been right that a girl running up to the distressed green had been a bad idea, but she felt no satisfaction in it. She couldn't even watch. She flinched away and curled in on herself - and on poor little Regory, whom she clutched very tightly - and shut her eyes. Unfortunately, she couldn't shut out the noise of it, or the sickness or the dread. She could only wait for it to be over, and when a soft mental nudge from her dragon signaled to her that it was, she opened her eyes with no small amount of reluctance. What if..what if...

A boy is dead, Hesperith confirmed, sharing the words with Theo as well, as she often had in recent days. Others are...not well off. It might well be that they would still be lost, and she hoped with all her hearts they would not be, for they might be someone's. A sharp sting of worry from Hers prompted her to reach out to Zelaya and Iathe: no words, just a gentle brush of reassurance, of making sure they were still there.

Lady Grey

Amid the chaos, more dragons Impressed - Including a few rather angry babies! One had even gone to comfort a girl on the sands, a fierce but protective looking Green. Sure the rampaging would soon end, Lady Grey inched just a bit closer to the front, trying to watch but still keep people between her and assured injury. Perhaps things would calm now?

Tarnaria

For her part, Tarnaria had gotten a bit further from the angry dragons. She was now at the back of the group of girls, sitting on the sand and pressing her hand to her leg where the claws had dug in. She'd be a bloody mess, and surely an easy target for another angry dragon, but now she'd at least maybe have a chance to get away. Her only comfort, as she watched another Candidate berating Amila, was that nobody was doing that to her. Her focus had gone back to her leg, causing her to miss Amila Impressing. If she had seen it happen, she would have felt so proud, finding the other Candidate so similar and yet so different from herself, but as it was she was in pain and not looking.

Hyglath
!!!!!! A burst of joy and relief surged through Hyglath and His both when he felt Orri, and the boy responded to his inquiry. He could have trumpeted - wanted to! - but was all too aware that such noisy behavior could frighten the hatchlings, and they most certainly did not need more of that. All the chunky bronze could do was wriggle in place...and then hastily apologize for winging his neighbor with, well, his wing. Oops! That same rush of relief flooded Herg'r, and he sat back down hard, still uncharacteristically quiet, very possibly to the relief of those sitting near him.

If the Healers want to tend to you, you should let them, Hyglath advised, with the weight Herg'r's full agreement behind him. If it is not too bad, they will release you when they are finished. But if it...takes longer, you will not be so far away that Yours cannot find you. Either way, there are many eggs left to hatch, and you will need your strength - take what they offer you, so that you can be ready. Hopefully the injuries were minor, and it would not take very long, although the fact that they wanted to remove him to tend to him did not bode particularly well in that regard. But he was alive! He was coherent, he was stubborn.

Good, this was very good. Hyglath tried to keep his wriggling to his tail this time.

Nicara and Diesteth

It had been a rather brilliant day to start out with, one that was boding well as far as her hopes as she dropped Roana off at High Reaches. Even if she felt that telltale p***k of worry and concern, the overwhelming almost fear that she would lose the woman that she loved to a Weyr on the other side of Pern, Nicara was hopeful. Even if it was on the other side of Pern, she knew that Roana would find her perfect match if they were on those sands looking for her, that it would all be fine as long as she found the two hearts that would match with hers.

So it was with a mixed burst of overwhelming joy and terrible sadness that she leaned into Diesteth's words. A green, a beautiful large green dragon had Impressed to the redhead that stood on those sands, she would never be alone again as long as she had that green. Smiling at the girl so far below her on those unfamiliar sands, she took a deep breath and let both happiness and relief fill her instead of sadness. This wasn't a day for sadness, this wasn't a day for anything but joy.

At least for Roana, the girl hadn't even gotten off the sands yet, Diesteth hadn't even gotten to reach out to her to congratulate her for both of them, when blood spilled everywhere on the sands. Instantly on her feet, Nicara clapped both her hands over her mouth and started to hop, stressed out as fear overwhelmed her. They had just met! Please don't let the unthinkable happen when they had only just met! Look closer. the big blue said, words crashing over her like a calming waterfall. She is no longer alone, you were right. There is nothing to fear from that one's cousins, not for her. We can feel sadness for those who lost their lives, who's bodies were torn apart, but Roana is safe with her Ulendoth. With those words Diesteth sent the two on the sands a huge wave of respect and congratulations, a huge wave of love. Welcome to the world.

There was time for reflection and sadness at love so far away at another time.

Farellen had almost laid his hand on the other candidate's shoulder when a girl put herself between them, he frowned a little but she explainedd why, ah, she knew the boy, ok well he wouldn't go against her, she knew him, he didn't, being a Western transferred candidate, he didn't really know anyone among High Reaches, hadn't really felt the need to get to know them, unless he had to, if he'd made friends, he'd only have to leave them with no way of visitng, except for begged dragon rides or messages through his flits. He shrugged and said, through closed teeth "nah, i'll be fine i'm sure" he would go to the healers if he had to, but shardit his dragon could be on the sands, "Farellen" he said, by way of an introduction "he gonna be ok?" he addded, all through closed teeth, it hurt like all heck when he so much as twitched the muscles on that side.

Helane stopped and gently put the girl back down again "Sorry" she said quetly, "I just wanted to get her away and safe" She glanced at the Healers, noting some were coming over, "I'll leave you and them to it" she glanced down as she stood up, noting Ionan's glare, only a slight twitch of disappointment flashed across her face, she'd only been trying to help. Before walking back to her friends, sparing a glance back towards where she had put Ticene, hoping her new friend would be alright. She turned back to Jeri, noting she'd latched onto Fahn .. "Well isn't this a crapshow" she said, subdued as she reached them, giving them a weary smile, a small one, trying to get back into the excited mood she had been in before.

Rokar lay quietly, slowly turning his robes red, his vision swam so he closed his eyes, he was so tired but his arm and abdomen throbbing with pain kept him awake, he felt very alone at that moment, more than he ever had back home, now he wondered if he would ever go back....

Bekah had gone white when the depths of hell broke loose upon the sands, sure she'd attended maulings at other hatchings but this.. was saveeage, fast, brutal.... She shook her head, trying to center herself while some healers went to those candidates that weren't really moving much. She looked around at where she was needed when she saw a rather broad candidate, half carrying another towards her. "there, place her there" she said, pointing to a cot that had been placed for emergency treatment for non mobile patients, oh shells that was a lot of red, both the injured girl and the one carrying her were covered. Nodding a thanks to the girl as she went back to the sands Bekah called for one of the other apprentices, before peeling up the robes to find the girl's worst injuries.

She baulked slightly at the wounds across Ticene's back, "Quickly, pressure here and here" pointing to the worst wounds as she grabbed pads and bandages, passing Ticene a small smooth stick "bite on this if you struggle, it helps, i promise" she said, hurrying herself and two other apprentices to get thick pads on the worse claw marks and wrapping bandages around the girl tightly "sorry" she said, knowing the girl would be in agony "we can take you off the Sands for more in depth treatment but if you want to stay, this is the best we can do" she said, pretty sure the girl would want to stay, she hadn't met a concious patient yet that had allowed themselves to be take off the Sands and to the infirmary.

Niobet and Aedeth

She wasn't trying not to be social. She just hadn't made a particular effort to speak with anyone else in the Stands. She wasn't trying to keep anyone away, though, either, so when K'der settled beside her, she wasn't put out at all, really. Maybe a little curious, but not upset. She offered a polite smile, then leaned a little sideways to ask, "And what's your take on all of this?"

A pained hiss escaped Ticene as her robe was pulled up. The fabric pulling away from the many points where it had already stuck to her. The candidate's eyes slid open to look at Bekah as she spoke, her eyes were lidded and just a little unfocused. Most likely a combination of the loss of blood and the shock of the situation. Slowly Ticene took the stick, placing it between her teeth. Better to have it there from the word get go. Hopefully it wouldn't be that bad, but better than needing it there and it being in her hand instead. Sitting on the cot she gripped the side with her hands and did her best to stay straight. As thick pad were placed against her back she felt some of the pain dull. It narrowed down to what she imagined was where most of the damage was. Most likely the smaller cuts going numb while the pain in the larger wounds only seemed to lose their edge. It was a bizarre feeling to be both numb and not, but she didn't fancy moving to try and figure out what exactly she was feeling. When the bandages started to tightened, she squeezed her eyes shut, biting down hard on the stick, it helped to have something to focus on. It would be over soon, and it was for the best. At least this way she wasn't going to be pouring blood out all over the sands like some wounded herdbeast.

Deep breaths. Not too deep now, since the bandages were being wrapped around. Steady, that was it. In through the nose, that was it, right? Or what it in through the mouth and out through the nose. No, she was sure it was in the nose. Managing to lift her gaze from the floor Ticene looked around and the bandages were finished up. Wait, where had Helane gone? She really needed to thank her for basically carrying her over here. The candidate looked around before realising that the healer had started talking to her again. Turning her head she looked at the healer, took the stick from her mouth, and attempted a smile. It wasn't very convincing, more just a pulling at the corners of her mouth. "Thanks," she said, although it sounded a bit more like a croak. Her throat and mouth suddenly felt very dry. "I'll be okay, I'm just gonna sit here a little bit, if that's okay?" Going back out onto the sands was of course out the question. Tic however was of the opinion that once she had some time to breath she'd be up and on the sands again. However, as the adrenaline wore off and the numbweed dulled her pain, she just found herself wanting to curl up and maybe go to sleep.

It was somewhat of a relief to see that particular bronze Impress and walk off the sands, but even though the big bronze was gone there was still a body where he had been, that alone was enough to give Rizdax pause in his racing thoughts. It was sobering, it was horrifying, but there were still two green dragons on the sands that had he had no reason to believe wouldn't start attacking and trying to just randomly kill candidates again. Possibly his friends. Shar already had blood running down her back and as she reached out to tighten a fist in the robes at his left shoulder he forced himself to shove down his feelings once more as the past rose to remind him....

...he had been worthless then and he was rather worthless now too, wasn't he?

Darkness edged closer.

That's enough now. Mharlith's words pushed through him, called him back from the edge of his darker memories that kept trying to swallow him whole even as he pushed against them with everything his mind had. There were things that Rizdax had seen and been through that would take much longer than a few months to work through, he knew that he should heed the dragons words for his own sanity and for his own physical being. But it was too soon, there was still so much danger just waiting on the sands for his friends. The two greens that had caused so much pain were still there but their siblings were threading their way through the candidates with intentions in mind, ones that he couldn't grasp fully as just a mere candidate.

If the bronze that had just impressed had shown him anything, it was that they didn't always do things for the sake of Impressing alone. So Riz sent as strong an emotion to Mharlith as he could, knowing that he couldn't talk to Nimueh's dragon directly like the brown could with him. Not yet, soon, but not yet. he whispered in his own mind, projected towards the one dragon that had given him such comfort for so many months. He didn't want to disappoint either of them, didn't want to disobey them, but there was still something he had to do before he went back there.

Riz took as deep a breath as he could manage and stood just a little bit taller. He'd been looking for where and how he belonged in this Weyr, such a different place than where he'd grown up, since he'd been brought there and that sense of belonging wasn't behind him in the past where his memories were. Where that darkness was. It was around him, ahead of him now. If he could face it head on for just today, even if it didn't come to pass yet that he could reach it, at least he could be there to try? Losing some blood felt like a small price to pay for protecting those he cared about and for the chance to reach that sense of belonging.

Reya

Reya hadn't noticed when her brother departed, so engrossed was she in everything happening below, but she did notice his return because he'd returned with food, which he waved under her nose to tempt her. Having food waved in her face was not something that had ever tempted the young woman, who didn't really like to have anything waved in her face, but she took it out of his hand with one of hers so that he'd stop. Older brothers, no matter how old they got, were always idiots.

"I don't know how you can think of food right now," Reya murmured to her brother, not taking her eyes off the sands. It was a relief to see that the healers who had been standing by on the edges of the sands were going about their business, recovering and treating those candidates who required it.

R'bin shrugged. "The hatchlings do, and it's a considerably more exciting event for them than it'll ever be for the people in the stands."

"It's unnatural," Reya argued. "You missed things. And I don't know how you can have any appetite with all that blood everywhere."

Again, she felt R'bin's shoulder rise in a shrug. "Huarangith eats meat. Live, usually. If I let blood and violence put me off my own feed, I'd've starved turns ago. Plus, before we learned how to keep some things private, I used to actually feel the same satisfaction and pleasure in hunting and feeding that he did."

Reya considered pointing out that the blood in question at the moment did not belong to a herdbeast, but to people, who weren't meat. She didn't though. It wasn't an argument worth having. She knew her brother wasn't pleased to see so many people injured, he was simply being practical. If she was going to live at a Weyr, she would have to learn to do the same. Logically, she knew that all of these candidates had been offered a choice to come here, and it was a chance they took knowingly, but she also could not so quickly forget the misery of the young woman who had berated the bronze before he Impressed. Even if they never Impressed, these candidates would live more exciting lives than most people on Pern.

"I still can't believe you don't mind missing things," she hissed. She still hadn't taken a bite of the food he'd brought her. She hadn't even glanced at it to see what it was.

"I've seen a few more of these than you have," he pointed out. "And this is going to go on for a while, I expect. Plus, I've been awake even longer than you have. I require sustenance."

None of those points could be easily debated, and again Reya elected not to try. Instead she stole a glance at the young man on her other side, who had spoken to her briefly about how tightly she was clasping her hands. To her astonishment, he was folded over and snoring softly. Dragonriders!

Whren & Jemi

"She is like this with everyone," Whren replied dryly, if fondly. He was used to Jemi brashness and had long since accepted his lack of height... he actually found it rather useful in some occasions. "Whren," He added, motioning to himself.

"It's Jemaselle... but I hate it. So Jemi works, and ehh. We be alright when people start acting like proper candidates instead of children." Jemi rolled her shoulders, relaxing slightly. "Probably help if you know... they stop running at dragons." She huffed, rolling her eyes.

Like in a way she got it... if that had been Whren, that dragon wouldn't be having teeth left in its maw, but the events leading to that little green keening and then the death and then the maulings and onward.

Ielin - High Reaches Candidate

The feeling of Matoath’s gentle press into his hand made him smile. Ielin gently scritched her eyeridges how Waves often liked--gentle and kind. Matoath was fierce, and he had no doubt she would keep his new friend safe and happy. His injuries aren’t the worst, but they would likely scar. But Amila’s hug takes him by surprise the most, and he’s gingerly returning it with both arms.

“Me too.” It’s quiet, but hopeful. He wants to hope this hatching might be the one for him after the last few hatchings he’s been left standing. But even if he is, that would be okay. “Whether my dragon’s here or not, I’ll meet you both at the feast.” He was happy she found Hers, and to a sweetheart that had left such an echo on him at the touching. He nods as they part, watching until the pair near disappear into the crowd to find the feeding tables before turning back to the hatching. Oh, Avada had Impressed, that was good. With such an amount of eggs still rocking, and so many hatchlings on the sands, Ielin could let himself be a touch hopeful, if just needing to keep watch for dragons who might want to add to his injuries.

Tuelarua - High Reaches Candidate

Worry crossed her face, gazing at the darkening color on his jaw. It had to hurt, he wasn’t even moving his jaw. Guilt had fettered in, though she hadn’t been the one to strike the blow. Yet.. Tuelarua can’t entirely force him to get help, nor could she really blame him for staying when there might be a possibility of meeting His dragon..

“Oh, I’m Tuelarua. I prefer Tuela, but Tue is okay as well.” Less of a mouthful of her name for Farellen to say, at the very least. A western candidate, she is fairly certain. She’d been at High Reaches for such a short time, but she’s fairly certain. Perhaps she might be able to keep in touch with him, if His wasn’t out there. “I.. certainly hope so. I think he just needs.. space.” It felt odd to actually say it, but a more odd sense that he’d just.. left.

Weyrling Makimton and Green Zygmuth

Makimton got the sense that Zygmuth was talking to someone else, but he wasn’t sure who. He kept popping small pieces of meat into her mouth each time it opened. Makimton, this is Martirae and Anakumath. I was just telling her how wonderful you were. Also, you’ll need to shorten your name. Do you know what you want?

He was surprised when his green directed him toward the new gold and her rider. He nodded politely to the pair. “Congratulations on finding each other.” Makim twittered a moment as Zygmuth commented on his name. “Ohhhhh I guess I haven’t thought about it much. M’kim, or M’ton, or maybe K’ton? There’s so many possibilities.”

Zygmuth was momentarily distracted from stuffing her belly by the arrival of a fellow green. Ulendoth! I am sorry, but I couldn’t wait. Mine called to me. I see you found yours too! Mine is Makimton. He’s gonna shorten it soon. She laughed, then head bumped Ulendoth friendly. You should try some of the meat, it’s delicious.

Candidate Nalacko she/her

Nala could hear the dragons hissing and screaming as they fought, but she couldn’t bring her eyes up to look. No she rather felt content to remain behind Riz for as long as she and he were on the sands. She could not wait for this to be over. Riz needed to see a healer.

She couldn’t see what damage had been done to her friend and she frowned at Zamistia’s comment. “If we all work together?” She’d be grateful for an excuse to get off the sands. Would her father call her a coward? Probably. Nalacko didn’t care. Let him spread his rumors. She’d happily work in the kitchens or wherever.

“Or I can bring healers with a stretcher if he really can’t move…..” She trailed off as Shar said Riz had to stay. Well if he passed out then she’d make sure he reached the healers no matter what! How could she possibly think of dragons after a scene like that? Nala struggled between looking toward the dragons again or not.

Akaris
Akaris couldn't say how much time had passed since she'd been delivered to the Healers; all she knew was that it felt far too soon when she was...encouraged to move. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and once they'd been treated and bandaged to the extent that was immediately necessary, there was no sense in her taking up valuable space and time when others in far worse condition were carried over. She didn't resist, instead making room by getting gone, but was, suffice to say, reluctant to return to the Sands where the bulk of the candidates were getting ahold of themselves now that the worst seemed over...but she didn't trust that it was, and now she had no Rylyrr to cling to. He was gone, with Andelath. Perfect, sweet, handsome Andelath. She'd been happy for them, before all that joy had been supplanted by fear and pain.

Bereft, she surveyed the scene with wide eyes for long moments, thoughts forming slowly when they formed at all. Should she...? She should, but she...was no longer so concerned with proving herself as she had been. The desire was still there, underneath the pain and the emotional exhaustion, but she didn't have it in her to dig it out. Maybe this was it. Maybe this was the best she could do. That realization was a heavy weight that sagged her shoulders and kept her gaze down as she limped her way towards A'ral. There was some hesitation the closer she got - was this okay? It had been at Western, but maybe here at High Reaches... She fretted at the tears in her bloodied robe - slit by claws from hip to thigh, but she couldn't spare the energy to care that she looked a mess - and glanced up in silent question.
