CPAs have a valuable perspective on the nonprofit tendency towards overreliance on a single individual. A CPA can rely on “owner controls” in a small business—but a nonprofit manager is not an owner risking his or her own capital. A nonprofit manager will probably care deeply about an organization’s customers in much the same way the ownership—the Board of Directors—does. However, the nonprofit manager does not serve those customers only on his or her own behalf, but rather on behalf of a larger community. Thus, controls must be in place not just to prevent outright fraud, but to prevent one person’s notion of the mission from shaping the entire organization.

A CPA who has his or her foot in the door as an auditor or accountant can provide valuable advisory services to nonprofit management. CPAs should keep in mind that they have invaluable perspective on the role that internal control and financial personnel play in the health of the nonprofit.
