*reads first lesson* Okay! I undersrtand~
*reads second* Umm...... Maybe we should save the spelling for when we actually understand the language more?
*tries again* Now my brain hurts. Crap. And my teacher says I have a gift for languages.
Gotta stop drinking the blue milk. Or is that green? Orange? Polka dots? What?

Is there anybody here that doesn't use only romaji? razz I'm taking Elementary Japanese in college. I was told by my sensei and also by various articles online that the sooner you nix the romaji, the better for your understanding of Japanese.

I used to study Japanese, I even had the Genki textbooks & workbooks but I ended up selling them to a friend before using them myself like a dummy. Now they're so expeeeensive gonk
I learned a good bit but never actually committed to it, just immersed myself in media and casually browsed some chats/easy reads. I'd love to be able to speak the language more, but where I live there's 0 use for it and nobody to talk to so unless I'm constantly aggressively pursuing it, it kind of falls out of my head crying
I listen to Japanese music & watch Japanese movies with subs, and watch interviews of my fave JP artists, and watch tiktoks made by Japanese people speaking casual Japanese. I used to use apps to find Japanese people to practice with but it was always either stiff & felt formal and awkward or I hit a cultural wall where I "knew" what they were saying but completely missed the context or just didn't get it.
My kana reading skills are pretty good, and I know a good handful of basic kanji/phrases by sight but as stated before, since I really get no practice other than what I do/find myself, which is really one-sided, I don't know how to keep it fresh and keep learning. I'm afraid if I tried speaking Japanese now I'd sound like a bad AI trying to read a 20-year old textbook with random dated internet slang thrown in sweatdrop
It would be nice to have a Japanese language chat thread somewhere for learners to get practice in I think 3nodding
